A gaming PC can add to your electricity use, but it does not determine which tariff is cheapest. Compare tariffs against your household’s expected annual consumption, including the unit rate, daily standing charge, contract terms and—if applicable—time bands. Estimate the PC’s own usage from its actual average power draw and hours of use, rather than its power-supply rating.
Compare the whole household bill, not just the gaming PC
A tariff has two basic electricity charges: the unit rate for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) you use and a daily standing charge, payable even on days when you use no electricity. Your total cost also depends on tariff terms and, for multi-rate offers, when you use electricity. Ofgem explains these charges in its guide to how an electricity or gas bill is calculated.
Compare offers using the same estimated annual household consumption and usage pattern. Check the rates available for your region, payment method and meter type; these affect the prices a supplier offers, so a national average is not a quote for your home. Use the supplier’s live offer and your own details.
- Unit rate: the price per kWh, including each rate and time band if the tariff is multi-rate.
- Standing charge: the daily charge. Include it when comparing the household’s total cost, but do not assign the entire charge to the PC.
- Contract terms: whether the tariff is fixed or variable, how long it lasts, and any exit conditions shown in the offer.
- Eligibility: required meter type and any other conditions, such as whether a smart meter is needed.
- Usage schedule: the actual hours covered by cheaper and more expensive rates, not just the advertised off-peak price.
Ofgem’s average default-tariff electricity figures for Direct Debit customers in England, Scotland and Wales are 26.32 pence per kWh and 54.83 pence per day for 1 October to 31 December 2026. They are averages, not a personalised offer; actual regional rates and payment arrangements differ. Ofgem also says electricity VAT treatment changes from 1 October 2026, so costs cannot be compared directly with earlier periods. Check the current regional price-cap rates and standing charges rather than carrying these figures forward.

Estimate what the PC adds to your electricity use
A power-supply unit’s wattage is its capacity rating, not a measurement of the PC’s constant draw. To estimate running cost, use measured or defensible average power during representative sessions, then account for how many hours you use the system. A plug-in energy monitor can measure consumption at the socket; the practical advice in GPUsed’s gaming PC running-cost guide is informational, not an independent test or an authoritative statistic about typical PC consumption.
- Choose what to measure. Measure the PC at the wall during representative gaming and, if useful, ordinary desktop use. Include the monitor or other devices only if you want their electricity counted in the estimate.
- Convert watts to kilowatts. Divide the measured average watts by 1,000. For example, 400 watts is 0.4 kilowatts.
- Calculate energy use. Multiply kilowatts by hours used. At an average 0.4 kW for 3 hours, the session uses 1.2 kWh.
- Apply the tariff’s unit rate. Multiply the session’s kWh by the rate that applies during those hours. At 26.32 pence per kWh, 1.2 kWh costs about 31.6 pence in usage charges. That rate is Ofgem’s England, Scotland and Wales Direct Debit average for 1 October to 31 December 2026, not a guaranteed rate for a particular home.
- Scale to your normal schedule. Repeat for the different types of use and the relevant tariff time bands, then estimate the annual PC usage cost. Add it to the household comparison; account for the standing charge once as a household charge.
The formula is: average watts ÷ 1,000 × hours = kWh; then kWh × applicable unit rate = usage cost. This estimates the PC’s variable electricity cost, not the whole bill.

Decide whether a time-of-use tariff suits your gaming hours
A multi-rate tariff charges different prices at different times. Its value depends on the complete household schedule and the actual time bands in the offer—not simply on whether the tariff has a cheap off-peak rate. Ofgem describes single- and multi-rate tariffs on its price-cap rates page.
- If you often game during expensive peak hours, the higher rate may offset savings from cheaper periods.
- If your household can shift substantial electricity use into cheaper periods, a multi-rate offer may be worth comparing.
- Check the exact schedules, peak rates, meter requirements and eligibility in the live offer. A tariff’s labels alone do not show whether it will cost less for your household.
Compare the estimated total for your whole household under each tariff, using the same annual consumption and realistic timing. Include each applicable unit rate and the standing charge, then check the contract terms. The PC’s usage is one part of that calculation, not a standalone basis for selecting a tariff.

Understand what the price cap does—and does not—tell you
Ofgem’s price cap limits unit rates and standing charges for qualifying default tariffs; it does not cap the total bill. The more electricity a household uses, the higher its bill can be. Fixed tariffs are outside the cap. Ofgem’s explanation of the energy price cap also notes that the cap is reviewed quarterly.
For 1 October to 31 December 2026, Ofgem gives an average price-cap level of £1,723 per year for a typical household using electricity and gas and paying by Direct Debit. That is a typical-use illustration for that period, not a forecast for a gaming-PC household and not a maximum bill.

- AUTOMATICALLY ALARM: When your power supply test value is normal range, the Power Supply Tester would issue a buzzer alarm, Easy to Know.
- WITH LED DISPLAY: We have developed a portable computer power tester for the power supply market that can judge the quality of the power supply. It has LCD display intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/ 0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and more test functions. It is your best choice and helper to quickly detect PC power.
- EASY TO USE: This power tester only needs to be connected to the power supply ATX connector to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in LCD screen to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- PRACTICAL & CONVENIENCE: Small and practical power tester. Now the number of power output groups is increasing. As long as one of them has problem, the hardware of the computer system may work abnormally or even burn out. To measure whether the output voltage output of the power supply is stable, the player usually uses a multimeter. But for the average user is still a little troublesome.
- NOTE: It can also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, and the external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light display, there is no LCD voltage. There is LCD voltage display only when connecting to the 24pin or 20pin.
