How to Choose and Set Up an RTMP Encoder for YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream on YouTube with an encoder, connect a software or hardware encoder to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then configure a supported video and audio profile that your equipment and upload connection can sustain. For most standard streams, use RTMPS, match YouTube’s bitrate recommendation to your codec, resolution, and frame rate, leave about 20% upload headroom, and test the complete chain before the event.

Choose an encoder that fits your production

An encoder turns your video and audio sources into a live feed that YouTube can receive. It is useful for gameplay, screen sharing, external audio or video equipment, and multi-camera productions. You can use software running on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events, but says expensive equipment is not required to get started. It does not publish a universal threshold at which hardware becomes necessary or comparative performance benchmarks, so choose based on your own sources and workflow.

Software encoder

Software is a practical starting point when your sources are already available to the computer and that computer can encode the scene at your chosen settings without disrupting gameplay or other production tasks. Check that it supports RTMPS and the codec and resolution you plan to send. Leave enough computing capacity for the production itself, not just encoding.

Standalone hardware encoder

Consider dedicated hardware when a higher-production workflow calls for dedicated operation, multi-source routing, or a separate encoding device. Confirm its inputs, supported codecs, frame rates, resolution, network connection, monitoring tools, and recovery workflow before buying. A hardware encoder is not automatically more reliable in every setup; test the intended configuration.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check sources and connections before choosing

  • List every source: gameplay, screen capture, camera, microphone, mixer, or other audio and video input.
  • Check whether the encoder has the inputs and routing you need. If your source is HDMI and your computer has no suitable input, an HDMI capture device may be needed; screen-only and webcam workflows do not automatically require one.
  • Confirm the encoder supports YouTube’s ingestion protocol and the codec, frame rate, resolution, and bitrate required for your production.
  • Assess the available computer resources and upload capacity, including whether another person or device shares the connection.
  • Consider setup complexity, portability, monitoring, and how you will handle a dropped connection during an unattended or live event.

YouTube documents both software and hardware encoder workflows and lists gameplay and external video hardware among common encoder use cases. It does not endorse a specific encoder or capture-card model. See YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Confirm your channel can go live

Before configuring the encoder, verify that the channel is eligible. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this check until event day. You can review the current steps in YouTube’s getting-started guide.

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate

Pick a profile the entire production and connection can sustain. A larger resolution or higher frame rate is not automatically better if it makes the stream unstable. YouTube’s recommendations below are ingestion bitrates—the rates sent from the encoder to YouTube—not a promise of the quality or resolutions each viewer will receive after YouTube processes the stream.

YouTube recommended RTMP/RTMPS ingestion bitrates

The following figures are YouTube Help’s recommended bitrates in Mbps on its encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. Select the row for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; YouTube also lists minimums on that page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 recommended H.264 recommended
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
2160p30 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p60 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate. At 1080p60, its recommendations are 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are platform recommendations, not independent quality tests. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before an important broadcast.

Match the bitrate to your upload connection

YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom for the total stream bitrate. If you send primary and backup streams, count both. Use a measured, stable upload capacity rather than your internet plan’s advertised download speed. Shared or variable connections need extra caution: reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the selected profile would leave too little capacity for fluctuations and other network traffic. YouTube’s streaming tips cover bandwidth planning and preparation.

Set keyframes and audio

  • Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Video rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR), as listed in YouTube’s encoder settings.
  • Video codecs: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps stereo. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, AAC is required and YouTube recommends 384 Kbps.

Confirm the selected audio device is the one actually feeding the encoder. Check levels, channel layout, and audio-video sync with representative material, not only a silent desktop or static scene.

Connect the encoder to YouTube with RTMPS

Live Control Room provides the stream URL and stream key. The encoder needs both unless a YouTube preset supplies the destination automatically. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, share it publicly, or paste it into an untrusted service. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open YouTube Studio and Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one for the intended event.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key. Keep the key private. If the encoder offers a YouTube preset, use it only after confirming the destination and protocol it selects.
  3. Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection in transit to Google’s servers. If configuring the destination manually, use the RTMPS server URL supplied by Live Control Room and enter the key in the matching field.
  4. Set resolution and frame rate. YouTube automatically detects stream settings in Live Control Room and recommends leaving resolution selection to automatic detection. Manual stream-resolution selection is available through a custom key.
  5. Set the matching video and audio profile. Enter the codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate; verify the audio source and layout.
  6. Start sending the feed and inspect Live Control Room. Confirm that a preview appears and check stream health before starting the public event.

RTMPS protects the connection in transit; it does not remove every possible security risk. If a connection fails, verify that the encoder supports RTMPS and that the server URL and key correspond to the intended stream. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance explains the encrypted protocol.

Choose latency for the kind of event

Latency is the time between capture and playback. A lower-latency setting can make audience interaction feel more immediate, but may increase buffering; a one-way event may benefit more from prioritizing stable playback than fast replies. There is no best mode for every stream. YouTube says 4K/2160 streams are set to normal latency.

HLS is a separate ingestion route for supported cases, including some HDR or codec workflows that are unavailable through RTMP. It has higher latency because it sends video in segments and requires a different configuration; it is not a drop-in RTMP replacement. YouTube’s current HLS requirements include 1–4 second segments, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. For a standard encoder setup, focus on RTMPS unless your workflow specifically requires HLS. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.

Test the complete stream before the event

Rehearse with the same equipment, sources, and network conditions you expect to use. A preview alone does not prove the audience-facing watch page or the event start and end sequence will behave as planned.

Troubleshoot common encoder problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no feed Wrong stream URL or key, unsupported protocol, or encoder not sending Confirm the URL and key in Live Control Room, check that the encoder supports RTMPS, and verify that the feed is actively running.
Connection fails after choosing RTMPS Encoder preset or network may not support the selected destination Confirm RTMPS support and use the RTMPS URL shown for the stream rather than an unrelated server address.
Stream health reports instability or frames drop Upload capacity is insufficient or variable, or the encoding device is overloaded Check sustained upload capacity and total bitrate, including a backup feed. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a profile the connection and encoder can maintain.
Preview is at an unexpected resolution Automatic detection or the selected output profile differs from the intended settings Check the encoder output and Live Control Room detection. YouTube recommends automatic detection; manual selection is available with a custom key.
Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync Wrong input, channel layout, level, or audio-video timing Select the correct source, check levels and stereo or 5.1 configuration, and test representative audio before going live.
Audience playback buffers despite a clean local preview Low-latency settings, network variation, or viewer playback conditions Reassess whether lower latency is necessary; it can increase buffering. Test the watch page and prioritize a sustainable profile.
Stream key may have been exposed Credential shared in a screenshot, message, or untrusted service Reset the key in YouTube’s stream settings and replace it in the encoder before sending another feed.
Channel cannot start a live stream Verification, restriction status, or first-time activation delay Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions; first activation can take up to 24 hours.
