Compare the specific editions for content, controls, platform access, mod and multiplayer support, and how closely each preserves the experience you want. “Enhanced” can mean added quests or quality-of-life options—not a guarantee of complete content parity or greater fidelity.
Start with the experience you want
Before choosing an edition, pin down the game and version, the device you will play on, and what matters most to you. Are you aiming to reproduce the original release as closely as possible, or would you rather have additional content, controller support, or interface changes?
Make the comparison at the edition level, not just between “PC” and “port.” A port may preserve the main campaign while adding expansions or other material, and a PC edition may have its own updates or differences. Check the actual feature lists for both versions you are considering.
Compare the editions on the points that affect your playthrough
Content: check what is included
Compare campaigns, expansions, quests, playable characters, classes, items, spells, and difficulty options. Do not infer that everything matches—or that a port adds nothing—because the editions share a title or one is called “Enhanced.”

For example, Beamdog says Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition includes the original campaign, Tales of the Sword Coast, the Black Pits arena, Story Mode, and new characters. Beamdog also describes the edition as offering “75+ Hours of Adventure”; that is the publisher’s description, not an independently measured playtime guarantee. Steam’s product listing likewise describes the original campaign and expansion alongside added content and high-resolution support.
In Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, Beamdog lists the original campaign, Heart of Winter, Trials of the Luremaster, quests cut from the original game, 30+ new kits and adventuring classes, and new spells and items. Those additions can affect what is available in a playthrough, not just how the game looks or feels.

Controls and interface: consider how you want to play
Mouse-and-keyboard controls may suit a PC-style interface, while a console version may adapt party movement, targeting, inventory, and tactics for a controller. Check the specific port’s control scheme and interface options: controller support or a redesigned menu can change the feel of play even when the underlying campaign is familiar.
Beamdog’s April 18, 2019 Q&A described analog party movement, a virtual-mouse tactics mode, and radial menus for console versions of Infinity Engine games. These are historical development details, not confirmation of every current control feature on every platform.

Optional changes: see what you can turn off
Some editions let you disable particular enhancements, which can help if you want convenience features available without using all of them. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition lists remastered music, a rebuilt 4K interface, tab highlighting, area zoom, a combat log, and quickloot. Beamdog also says its Enhanced Edition features can be turned off to experience the game “in its original glory.” That option concerns the features Beamdog identifies; it is not proof that every aspect of the release is identical to the original PC version.
Platform access: verify the edition you can actually play
Confirm support for your exact operating system or console, then check the storefront, language, and system requirements on the current listing. Availability differs by game and edition. Beamdog’s pages list Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, as well as Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android; its page also lists cross-platform multiplayer support for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition is listed for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with Beamdog, Steam, GOG, iTunes, and Google Play listed as storefronts. Check the current platform and store page before buying, because a listing for one edition does not establish availability for another.

Mods, multiplayer, and saves: check the exact game and platform
If mods, online play, or moving saves between devices matter to you, verify them for the exact edition and platform you plan to use. Do not assume PC and console versions share the same support, or that a feature available in one game carries over to another.
Beamdog’s April 2019 Q&A said console cloud saves could not then transfer across platforms and that mod support and multiplayer details had not been announced. Those answers describe the situation reported at that time; they do not establish current support. Use current documentation or the relevant platform listing for a present-day decision.

Fidelity: name the original behaviors you want to keep
“More faithful” is only useful if you specify what you mean: original interface, controls, content, presentation, or some other behavior. An enhanced edition can add options and content while preserving much of a familiar game, but the feature descriptions above do not compare every port against every original PC release. For a fidelity-first choice, identify the changes that matter to you and check them against the exact editions rather than relying on the label.

- Choose a port or enhanced edition when its verified additions, interface changes, control adaptations, or platform availability are a better fit for how you want to play.
- Pause before choosing when mods, multiplayer, saves, or a particular removed or added feature is decisive but not confirmed for your exact edition. Find current, edition-specific information first.
