Choose by the kind of world you want to inhabit—and then by what you want to manage inside it. Historical games use real eras, places, and societies as a frame for alternate history; fantasy strategy makes invented peoples, magic, and realms part of the core experience. From there, decide whether you want to role-play a dynasty, guide a nation, or build an empire and fight tactical battles.
Historical versus fantasy: what changes?
“Historical” describes the starting frame, not a guaranteed historical outcome. Paradox presents Europa Universalis V as a deeply researched past world in which players guide societies along chosen paths. Familiar geography and historical starting conditions give your decisions context, even as play can diverge from what happened.
Fantasy strategy starts with invented settings, peoples, and often magic. In Age of Wonders 4, players can shape a faction by combining physical forms, societal traits, and arcane powers, then develop an empire through magical tomes and explore varied or custom realms.
Neither label tells you exactly what you will do minute to minute. A historical game may focus on a ruling family or on a society’s institutions and economy; a fantasy game may combine empire-level choices with battles you direct on a tactical map. Compare the actual play emphasis, not just the genre name.

Choose by the kind of strategy you want
Pick Crusader Kings III for dynasty and character role-play
Paradox’s official description centers on taking command of a house, expanding a dynasty, and continuing through playable heirs. Its listed starting dates are 867 and 1066. Traits, relationships, court intrigue, faith, governance, and armies make the people within the realm central to the experience. It is the clearest fit here if succession, marriages, rivalries, and a ruler’s personal choices sound more compelling than managing a nation as an abstract whole.
Pick Europa Universalis V for society-level management
Paradox describes Europa Universalis V as spanning almost five hundred years, with hundreds of nations and societies. Its listed systems include diplomacy, a sophisticated economy, revised military systems, logistics, resources, and climate zones. It is a strong match if you want to guide a society over time and respond to changing strategic conditions and historical starting profiles. The publisher calls it complex, but the available descriptions do not provide a comparable numerical difficulty rating.

Consider Europa Universalis IV if you mean the older series entry
Europa Universalis IV is a distinct, older comparison point—not another name for Europa Universalis V. An Epic Games Store FAQ describes EU IV as covering the mid-15th-century Renaissance through the early-19th-century Age of Napoleon, with continuous time that can be paused or slowed. Its add-on FAQ distinguishes major system expansions, regional immersion packs, and cosmetic content packs. Bundles and editions can change, so check the current store listing before making a purchase or downloadable-content decision.
Pick Age of Wonders 4 for fantasy worldbuilding and tactical battles
Paradox describes Age of Wonders 4 as combining 4X strategy with turn-based tactical combat. Its appeal is not simply that the setting is fantasy: you can design followers through combinations of physical forms, societal traits, and arcane powers, develop an empire with magical tomes, and explore varied or custom realms. Choose it if you want empire expansion and direct tactical battles, rather than assuming it plays like a historical nation-management game.

Choose Stellaris if you want fiction, but not necessarily fantasy
A fictional setting does not have to mean magic or medieval-inspired realms. Paradox describes Stellaris as a space strategy game built around exploration and survey ships, procedural galaxies, customizable species and ideologies, diplomacy, and configurable fleets. It may fit if your preference is discovering an invented universe. The publisher’s support article was updated September 16, 2026, but includes release-era feature language; use the current game page for present-day details.

Recognizable countries and periods can make the stakes legible before a campaign begins: players bring some prior knowledge of the world and its associations. In a 2016 launch-period postmortem, Stellaris game director Henrik Fåhraeus discussed the immersion challenge of moving away from historical settings, where familiar countries already carry meaning. The team’s comments are useful design history, not a rule that applies to every game or a guide to Stellaris today.

Fantasy settings can instead make invention part of the player’s agency: the factions, powers, and realms can be built for the game’s systems. That freedom does not automatically make a game more varied or easier to follow; what matters is whether its own factions and events give your choices meaning. The official descriptions establish different emphases, not a measured head-to-head verdict on quality, difficulty, or replay value.

A quick decision path
- Choose the setting first. If real periods and alternate-history possibilities appeal, start with the historical games. If invented worlds appeal, start with Age of Wonders 4; if you want science fiction rather than fantasy, consider Stellaris.
- Choose your scale of control. For characters, inheritance, and family politics, look at Crusader Kings III. For nation- and society-level diplomacy, economics, military systems, and logistics, look at Europa Universalis V.
- Decide how you want battles to work. If directing turn-based tactical combat is a key part of the appeal, Age of Wonders 4 explicitly offers that layer alongside 4X strategy.
- Check the exact game and listing. Distinguish Europa Universalis IV from Europa Universalis V, and verify the current platform, edition, and included add-ons on the store you plan to use.
