There is no universally cheapest choice between PlayStation, Xbox, and a gaming PC. The right budget option is the one that runs the games you want, fits the equipment you already own, and costs less over the period you expect to use it. Compare the complete setup and the games and services you will actually pay for—not just the console’s advertised price.
Start with the games and your real budget
Before comparing hardware, write down your spending ceiling and the games you most want to play. Check that each game is available on the platforms you are considering, and confirm whether playing with your friends depends on a particular platform, online service, or cross-play support. A must-play game or established friend group can eliminate an option before price does.
Then account for the equipment you already have. Someone with a suitable TV, monitor, controller, keyboard, or capable PC has a different starting cost from someone buying everything. Count only the equipment you still need, but do not assume that any existing PC or accessory will work for your intended games.
Compare the complete cost, not just the box
For each option, add the hardware, any screen and peripherals you need, storage or accessories, and the games you expect to buy. Add an online multiplayer subscription only if the way you play requires one. To compare fairly, use the same ownership period for each platform—for example, the next two or three years—and include recurring costs over that period.

- Price source: keep manufacturer recommended prices, retailer offers, and used prices separate. Record the country and date; availability and prices change.
The available official prices below are U.S. examples, not a complete lifetime-cost comparison. They do not establish a comparable price for a complete gaming PC setup.
What the current U.S. prices tell you
| Option | Verified U.S. price information | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Sony’s recommended prices effective April 2, 2026: PS5 Digital Edition, $599.99; PS5, $649.99; PS5 Pro, $899.99. Sony price announcement | These are U.S. recommended prices, not a guarantee of what every retailer charges. Sony directs buyers in other territories to local retailers or PlayStation Direct. |
| Xbox | Microsoft announced U.S. increases effective August 1, 2026: $100 for 512 GB models and $150 for 1 TB models. Its current Series X product page lists 1 TB configurations at $749.99 and $799.99. Xbox Series X product page | The announcement gives the size of the increases, not a complete post-change price list for every model. Do not infer a full Series S price list from these figures; check the current listing and local availability. |
| Gaming PC | No comparable current price for a complete gaming PC setup is established here. | Price a specific configuration for your games, target resolution, and performance expectations, including any display or peripherals you lack. |
Prices and stock can change. Check the linked official pages and local retailers before making a purchase, and compare like with like: a console price alone versus a complete PC setup is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

Include only the subscriptions you will use
PlayStation Plus Essential
PlayStation’s U.S. Essential page lists $10.99 monthly, $27.99 per three months, or $79.99 per twelve months. The plan includes online multiplayer, and charges recur until cancelled. If you need it for online play, multiply the relevant plan cost across your ownership period; if you do not need the service, leave it out of your comparison. PlayStation Plus U.S. plan details
Xbox and PC subscriptions
Verify current Xbox plan prices, terms, and regional availability directly before adding a subscription to your budget. For PC Game Pass, Microsoft says availability varies by plan, platform, and region; check each game’s details for its system requirements rather than assuming that every PC can run it. Choose a PC only after defining what it must do
Unlike a console model, “gaming PC” does not name one fixed level of performance or one price. Start with the exact games you intend to play and the resolution and performance you want. Check each game’s current PC requirements, then price a complete configuration that meets them, including a monitor, input devices, and storage if you do not already own them. Compare that total with the console setup and recurring spending for the same games and time horizon.
An existing PC may reduce the extra cost if it meets those requirements, but do not count it as a gaming-capable setup until you have checked. Likewise, do not call a PC cheaper or more expensive by comparing an unspecified build with a console’s sticker price.

Use this decision path
- List your must-play games and playing partners. Confirm current platform availability, multiplayer needs, and cross-play details on official game pages.
- Cross out platforms that miss a must-have. A lower price is not useful if the platform cannot play the games or connect with the people you care about.
- Inventory what you already own. Note compatible screens and accessories, and assess a PC against the requirements of your chosen games.
- Price complete setups in your market. Use current local prices for hardware and missing equipment; keep recommended prices, retailer discounts, and used listings distinct.
- Add only the games and subscriptions you expect to use. Project recurring charges over a consistent period and avoid treating a catalog or subscription as savings unless it replaces purchases you would otherwise make.
- Choose the lowest total among the options that meet your needs. If no option fits the ceiling, adjust the game list, timing, or equipment plan rather than relying on an unsupported claim that one platform is always cheapest.
Digital or disc PlayStation 5?
The PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 differ in media and purchasing options. Compare the current hardware prices with the way you plan to buy and access games, but do not assume a particular used-game saving: the cited price information does not establish one. Check the exact model and its current terms before deciding.
