For a prerecorded YouTube livestream replay, choose mid-rolls in the video’s Monetization settings in YouTube Studio—not with the live broadcast’s ad-break interval controls. If the video is monetized and at least eight minutes long, you can use automatic ad slots, place manual slots, combine both, or leave mid-rolls off. Start with automatic placements if you want a lower-effort baseline, then check the replay and keep breaks at natural pauses or transitions.
What mid-roll settings apply to a prerecorded livestream?
A replay is handled as a video: its mid-roll opportunities are placed on the video timeline in YouTube Studio. Live Control Room’s automatic, scheduled, or manual live-break controls are for an active broadcast; a replay’s settings are not chosen by setting a live-stream break interval. YouTube’s long-video mid-roll guidance says mid-rolls can be enabled for monetized videos that are at least eight minutes long.
A slot marks a possible ad break, not a guaranteed ad. Whether an ad is shown depends on factors including the slot’s quality, advertiser demand, viewer experience, and other considerations. Mid-roll settings also do not override monetization eligibility or advertiser-suitability decisions.
Choose the approach that fits the replay

YouTube does not prescribe a universal slot count or fixed spacing for prerecorded videos in the cited guidance. Choose placements from the recording’s actual structure rather than applying an arbitrary interval.

Set and review mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- Check eligibility. Confirm that the replay is at least eight minutes long, the channel and video are eligible for monetization, and monetization is enabled for the video. Advertiser suitability can affect whether it receives ads; YouTube’s monetization guidance explains the video-level controls and eligibility context.
- Open the video’s monetization settings on desktop. In YouTube Studio, open the replay’s Monetization settings and turn on “Show mid-roll ads during my video” if mid-rolls suit its content.
- Start with automatic slots if useful. Automatic placements can provide a starting point. Watch or scrub through the recording and compare each proposed break with what is happening at that moment. YouTube’s video ad guidance emphasizes placements that fit natural pauses and transitions.
- Open Manage ad slots and adjust the timeline. Add, move, or delete manual slots around natural pauses, visual transitions, or changes of topic. Avoid placing one in the middle of a sentence, demonstration, or action. Leave automatic slots enabled alongside manual slots if you want YouTube to supply additional opportunities.
- Use Studio’s feedback as a signal. If Studio marks a manual slot as unlikely to serve, consider moving it to a more natural breakpoint. The feedback indicates likelihood, not a promise that an ad will or will not appear.
- Save and recheck when needed. Save the configuration. You can return to the video’s Monetization settings to revise it, or disable mid-rolls if you decide they are a poor fit for the viewing experience.
Place breaks where the recording can tolerate them
- Look for a natural pause: for example, a break between topics or a moment when the presenter has finished a thought.
- Use visual transitions: a change of scene or segment may offer a less disruptive point than an uninterrupted sequence.
- Protect continuous action: avoid cutting into a sentence, demonstration, or other action that viewers need to follow without interruption.
- Judge the actual replay: a long recording does not automatically have suitable breaks at regular intervals. Review its pacing rather than assuming a particular number of ads or spacing is best.
- Consider why someone is watching: if interruptions would defeat the purpose of a continuous or sensitive experience, leaving mid-rolls off may be the better choice.
What settings can and cannot do
Enabling or positioning a slot creates an opportunity for an ad; it does not ensure delivery to every viewer. YouTube considers the placement, demand from advertisers, viewer experience, and other factors. A video also needs to be eligible for monetization, and content that is not advertiser-friendly may receive limited or no ads; some age-restricted content is ineligible. YouTube reports a live-stream comparison for automatic live mid-roll settings, but that result concerns active livestreams, not prerecorded video replays. It is not a forecast of replay revenue. For replays, use the timeline and Studio feedback to make a viewer-experience decision; do not treat a slot count as a revenue guarantee.

Common problems and fixes
- The mid-roll option is unavailable: check the video duration, monetization status, and whether the channel and video are eligible. The cited guidance applies to monetized videos at least eight minutes long; a setting cannot override eligibility restrictions.
- A manual slot is marked unlikely to serve: review the moment on the timeline and move the slot toward a pause, transition, or topic change. Studio’s indicator is a likelihood signal.
- An automatic slot interrupts a key moment: inspect the recording and adjust the placement using Manage ad slots. Automatic placement is not a substitute for reviewing the replay’s flow.
- You are looking for live ad intervals: those controls belong to the active broadcast workflow. For a replay, return to the video’s Monetization settings and timeline slots.
- A slot is present but no ad appears: this can happen because a slot is only an opportunity. YouTube weighs slot quality, advertiser demand, viewer experience, and other factors, and does not guarantee that a slot will serve.
