Choose by what you want to do when you leave the main road—not by map size alone. If you want discovery and experimentation, start with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If you want exploration with dangerous RPG combat, consider Elden Ring. For a dense science-fiction city and a story shaped by choices, look at Cyberpunk 2077. If you want to explore and survive in a procedurally generated universe, consider No Man’s Sky.
What should you compare besides map size?
“Open world” describes a broad structure, not what you will spend most of your time doing. A useful way to choose is to compare exploration, autonomy, traversal, and primary activity, then consider setting and story emphasis. These are recurring design elements discussed in a 2023 paper by Davern and Haahr on open-world gameplay (design research paper).
- Exploration: What makes you curious to leave the obvious route, and what might you find there?
- Autonomy: How much can you choose the order, approach, or solution?
- Traversal: What does moving through the world feel like, and which movement options define it?
- Primary activity: Are you mainly discovering, fighting, role-playing, surviving, or following a story?
- Setting and tone: Is the world a fantasy landscape, a science-fiction city, or a generated universe?
A public discussion captures one version of the reader’s question as wanting an open-world game “designed around its open world,” with exploration and world design central rather than tacked on. That is an illustrative comment, not evidence of what players generally prefer. The practical takeaway is to decide which activities and kinds of freedom matter to you before treating an open-world label as a recommendation.

Choose Breath of the Wild for discovery-led adventure
Nintendo presents The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a game of discovery, exploration, and adventure (Nintendo’s official game page). It is the clearest fit here if you want exploring the world to be a central part of the pitch, rather than simply a route between story missions. Nintendo also says an upgraded version can be played on Nintendo Switch 2 with improved visuals and performance; check the regional listing and edition details for the platform you intend to use.

Choose Elden Ring if you want exploration alongside dangerous combat
Bandai Namco identifies Elden Ring as an open-world game, and its official descriptions emphasize exploration, discovery, and RPG freedom (Bandai Namco’s official site; Bandai Namco Europe’s explainer). It suits players who want to roam and explore while accepting that combat encounters are a major part of the experience. The available evidence supports that contrast, not a promise that the game is relaxing or easy.
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 for a story-led science-fiction city
Cyberpunk 2077 centers on Night City, a vast open world where player choices shape the story and the people around the player, according to CD PROJEKT RED (official game page). Its urban science-fiction setting and choice-driven story make it a distinct option if you want a dense city rather than a fantasy landscape or a generated galaxy. It is still a city-based action-adventure, so a different setting does not mean every broad genre element will feel unfamiliar.

Choose No Man’s Sky for generated-universe exploration and survival
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as a game about exploration and survival in an “infinite procedurally generated galaxy” (official press page). Treat “infinite” as the developer’s description, not a literal measurable claim. Nintendo’s official US listing likewise describes the Switch version in terms of exploration and survival in a procedurally generated universe (Nintendo Switch listing). This is the fit for players prioritizing space exploration and survival systems over a single grounded city setting.

The official pages cited here establish specific platform information, not a universal list of current editions or regional availability. Nintendo describes an upgraded Breath of the Wild version playable on Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo lists a Switch version of No Man’s Sky.
