When a PC game stutters or drops frames, lower settings methodically rather than changing everything at once. Record where the hitch happens, compare performance in the same situation, and adjust one demanding option at a time. If lowering visual quality makes no difference, the cause may lie outside the graphics settings.
Start by identifying the kind of problem
A brief hitch, persistently low frame rate, uneven frame pacing, and screen tearing can feel similar, but they do not necessarily have the same cause. Before adjusting anything, note the game, the location or action where the problem occurs, your resolution and graphics preset, and whether the issue repeats. Intel recommends documenting symptoms and reproducing the problem when troubleshooting game issues (Intel troubleshooting guidance).
- Stutter or hitch: Look for a sudden pause or uneven motion, especially if it happens at a repeatable point.
- Low frame rate: The game may feel consistently slow rather than briefly interrupted.
- Tearing: The image appears split horizontally while the display shows parts of different frames.
These symptoms can overlap. A graphics adjustment is most useful when you can compare before and after under similar gameplay conditions.
Set a baseline you can compare
Use the game’s frame-rate counter if it has one, or a supported GPU-vendor reporting tool. Average FPS alone may not reveal short hitches: frame-time behavior can show whether frames are arriving unevenly. AMD’s Radeon Game Advisor can report average FPS, a 95th-percentile frame-processing measure, and frame-time graphs, then generate a new report after settings changes. Its availability and options depend on the software, hardware, and game (AMD Game Advisor instructions).

- Choose a repeatable scene, route, or action that usually triggers the problem.
- Record the current preset, resolution, and any counter or report values available to you.
- Make one change, then repeat the same scene and compare both the feel of the game and the measurements.
This is a practical comparison, not a guarantee that a particular setting will help. A different scene, workload, or background activity can make an after-change result hard to interpret.
Change demanding graphics options one at a time
Start with a broad preset comparison if the game offers one, then use individual settings to find a balance. Intel identifies shadows, reflections, and lighting as options to turn down when seeking higher FPS. AMD’s Game Advisor may also recommend changing preset quality or reducing options such as antialiasing, ambient occlusion, render scale, or resolution (Intel low-frame-rate guidance; AMD Game Advisor instructions).

No universal order or impact ranking is established: games and systems respond differently. If a change improves smoothness but the image looks worse than you want, restore it or try a smaller adjustment. Keep the setting only if the improvement is worthwhile to you.
Treat VSync as a separate test
VSync concerns synchronization between the game’s frame output and the display refresh; it is not simply another image-quality slider. Intel describes VSync as a way to help prevent tearing, while warning that turning it off can make jerkiness or stuttering more likely depending on the configuration (Intel VSync guidance).

If tearing is the main symptom, test the game’s VSync option and compare. AMD also describes Enhanced Sync as an alternative synchronization mode, but available choices depend on the hardware, software, and game (AMD graphics settings guidance). Sync behavior can affect smoothness and responsiveness differently across games and display setups, so do not assume that enabling or disabling a sync option will fix every stutter.

- Check the game’s issue reports. Look for developer or system-maker notices that match the game, graphics hardware, and symptom. Intel recommends checking for known issues and providing reproducible details (Intel troubleshooting guidance).
- Review updates and background activity. EA’s PC troubleshooting advice includes checking Windows updates and closing unnecessary background apps. The available graphics options and whether a change requires a restart vary by game (EA graphics troubleshooting).
- On a laptop, confirm which GPU runs the game. Where a discrete GPU is available, EA recommends ensuring the game uses it rather than an unintended graphics device (EA graphics troubleshooting).
- Consider heat and throttling. Intel identifies thermal throttling as one possible factor in gaming performance; check whether the system is overheating rather than assuming a graphics setting is responsible (Intel troubleshooting guidance).
- Allow for shader compilation or game-specific behavior. NVIDIA identifies shader compilation as a common cause of gameplay stuttering. Lowering visual settings may not remove a hitch tied to shader work or a particular game configuration (NVIDIA system-latency guide).
Driver-control-panel features also vary by software version, supported hardware, graphics API, and game. Use the game’s own settings first when possible, and check the current in-product labels rather than relying on a menu path that may have changed. NVIDIA’s documentation describes controls available in its Manage 3D Settings panel, but those controls are not universal to every PC game or GPU (NVIDIA Manage 3D Settings reference).
