Choose the Dawn of War IV faction whose decisions sound most satisfying to you: Orks for broad, aggressive pressure; Adeptus Mechanicus for network building and ranged planning; Necrons for durable forces and deliberate advances; or Space Marines for elite squads, upgrades and redeployment. These are preference matches based on developer-described mechanics—not a ranking of which faction is easiest or strongest.
As of October 4, 2026, the game is still forthcoming. Deep Silver lists a December 3, 2026 release for Windows PC on Steam, so the guidance below reflects announced features rather than hands-on play or a settled post-launch metagame.
Which Dawn of War IV faction should you play?
Start with the kind of choices you enjoy making in a real-time strategy game. Do you want to spread out and keep pressure on the enemy, build a network before your army reaches full strength, hold ground with durable troops, or manage a smaller force of capable units? The publisher’s faction guide describes four different approaches.

These tradeoffs and faction descriptions come from the publisher’s faction guide. The preference matches are interpretations of that guidance, not results from independent gameplay testing.

What does each faction ask you to do?
Orks: keep pressure on and spread out
Orks are presented as a faction built around aggression, strength in numbers and multiple bases or strongholds. Waaagh! Banners and free Stratagems are among their described tools. That may appeal if you like keeping production moving and asking the opponent to respond to pressure in several places.
The tradeoff is that numbers alone are not a guarantee of success. The publisher says individual units—especially ranged units—are not the Orks’ greatest strength, and their buildings are relatively easy to destroy. Its counter-guidance specifically warns that opponents can punish reckless advances. The play pattern therefore favors active pressure, not simply sending units forward without regard for position.
Adeptus Mechanicus: develop a network and make your firing line count
The Adeptus Mechanicus establish a Noosphere Network and extend it to resource points. Network levels contribute to research and upgrades; the faction is also described as having a superior firing line, with a mix of cheap units and powerful late-game options. It may fit players who enjoy improving their position before relying on a developed army.
That plan makes infrastructure and ranged positioning important decisions. You will need to account for setting up the network and protecting the units that give the firing line its value. The announced mechanics do not establish whether the faction is easy or difficult to learn.

Necrons: endure, advance the matrix and choose when to reposition
Necrons are described as resilient and suited to prolonged engagements. Resurrection Galleries can help recover losses, while advancing the Power Matrix brings bonuses. Mid- and late-game translocation can offset their slow movement and create opportunities to reposition.
The corresponding risk is positional: the publisher’s counter-guidance identifies slow movement and vulnerability outside the Power Matrix as exploitable. If you like building toward an advantage across the map and timing movement carefully, that tradeoff may be appealing; if you want to react quickly everywhere from the start, it may be less so.
Space Marines: invest in elite units, then reinforce or redeploy
Space Marines are described as elite fighters, usually advantaged in one-on-one encounters. Their tools include unit upgrades, on-field reinforcement, fortifications, reserves and Thunderhawk Relay redeployment. They may suit players who prefer to make each squad count and value ways to reinforce or move forces as a battle develops.

That capability comes with an economic and tactical cost: the publisher says Space Marine units are expensive and resource hungry. Their elite forces can also be stretched across multiple engagements. Blood Ravens and Dark Angels appear within the Space Marine presentation; Dark Angels are a playable sub-faction, not a fifth top-level faction.
How should you compare factions across the shared RTS systems?
The official game page describes base expansion, squad weapon and ability specialization, resource-point capture and upgrades, cover, garrison buildings and unit veterancy. Use those shared systems to think about the decisions you want to spend time on:
- Army size and map coverage: Do you prefer directing many units and maintaining pressure in multiple areas, or investing in a smaller number of powerful squads?
- Economy and progression: Do you enjoy capturing resources and building toward upgrades, or would you rather focus on immediate force deployment?
- Position and defense: Are you drawn to firing lines, cover, garrisons and fortifications, or to moving across the map and forcing responses?
- Timing and recovery: Would you enjoy planning around reinforcement, recovery or a later repositioning option?
These are decision lenses, not additional claims that any faction exclusively owns a shared system. The game’s description also emphasizes territorial capture, squad management, base-building and expanded sync-kill presentation.

Does your preferred multiplayer mode change the choice?
The developer’s Steam AMA names three matchmaking modes. Their objectives can influence which faction pattern sounds enjoyable, though none establishes a universally superior choice:

Orks’ described emphasis on numbers and multiple strongholds may appeal to players who like broad pressure; Necrons’ deliberate advance may interest those who enjoy steady territorial progress. These are ways to reflect on your preferences, not evidence of mode-specific faction advantages. The developers say they want faction identity to remain authentic while maintaining fair play, with balance work informed by data and feedback after launch. No current strongest-faction ranking is established.

Can campaign story be the deciding factor?
Yes. Deep Silver says each of the four factions has a unique campaign that contributes to one overarching narrative. KING Art Games described four full single-player and co-op campaigns, one for each faction. If you care more about the faction and story you want to follow than multiplayer matchups, campaign interest is a valid way to choose.

Deep Silver’s current game page lists 70+ campaign missions. KING Art Games announced over 110 units and buildings in 2025; that is a dated development announcement, not a verified final-release count.
Is there a best faction for beginners?
Official material does not name an easiest faction, and the game has not released as of October 4, 2026. Without hands-on evidence or a stable post-launch balance picture, calling any faction the best, easiest or strongest would go beyond what is established. For a first choice, use the play-pattern table and pick the tradeoffs you are most willing to learn.
Deep Silver currently lists Windows PC via Steam and a December 3, 2026 release date. Both details are subject to change before launch; check the official game page and FAQ for the latest listing.
