For PS5 games, the standard DualSense is the right starting point: PlayStation says PS5 games require it. Choose DualSense Edge if you specifically want configurable controls, such as remappable buttons and adjustable sticks or triggers. For PS4 games on a PS5, either DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 works. If you play on PC or mobile, check support for the particular game and device—pairing successfully does not guarantee every controller feature will work.

For PS5 games, start with DualSense
DualSense is PlayStation’s standard PS5 wireless controller. PlayStation’s FAQ says PS5 games require DualSense because they are designed to use its features. Its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers can add game-specific sensations, but those effects depend on the title; they are not guaranteed in every game. PlayStation’s DualSense product page
If you want a controller for ordinary PS5 play and do not need advanced control customization, DualSense is the straightforward choice. Do not choose a controller solely on the assumption that every game uses haptics or trigger resistance in the same way.
When DualSense Edge makes sense
DualSense Edge is aimed at players who want to configure how the controller responds. PlayStation lists button remapping, adjustable stick and trigger settings, interchangeable stick caps, back buttons, and profiles among its features. PlayStation’s DualSense Edge product page

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Consider Edge if you already know which controls you want to change or expect to use its profiles and back buttons. Those options are not an automatic improvement for every player. A purchase decision also depends on current local pricing; no price comparison is established here.
Can you use a PS4 controller on PS5?
Yes, for PS4 games played on PS5: PlayStation says both DUALSHOCK 4 and DualSense can be used. For PS5 games, the FAQ says DualSense is required. A DUALSHOCK 4 or a licensed standard-form PS4 controller does not become a PS5-game controller just because it connects to the console. Specialty PS4 controllers
PlayStation distinguishes standard-form controllers from licensed specialty devices such as steering wheels and arcade fight sticks. A specialty device may work on PS5 if the particular PS5 or PS4 game supports it. Check the controller maker’s compatibility information and the game’s own support details before buying or relying on it.
Choosing for accessibility or shared assistance
PlayStation lists its Access controller alongside DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4. Because the right setup depends on an individual’s needs and game compatibility, use PlayStation’s current Access controller information rather than assuming a particular configuration or capability.

PC game support is title-specific
PlayStation says PC controller support varies by game and advises checking a game’s Steam listing for full or partial controller support. Some PC titles support DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, and certain features may require a USB connection. A successful Bluetooth or USB connection alone does not establish that a game supports every button or advanced feature. PlayStation’s PlayStation gaming on PC page explains its PC guidance.
Feature limits on Mac and mobile
PlayStation’s device guidance says haptics are not compatible with Mac computers or mobile devices for the cited controllers; on PC, haptics may require USB. Adaptive triggers are unavailable on Android-based mobile devices. Feature availability can differ by device and game, so check the current compatibility guidance before choosing a controller for a particular setup. DualSense device guidance · Edge device guidance
