Choose stream and video typography by role, contrast, placement, and performance on the actual footage—not by searching for one universally “best” font. Use distinct treatments for short display text and longer captions, preserve a clear hierarchy, and check that each remains legible as shots and playback sizes change. For applicable web content, WCAG sets contrast minimums of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large-scale text, but those thresholds alone cannot guarantee readability in every video or viewing setup.
Start with the job the text needs to do
Typography for a live stream may need to identify a speaker, label a game statistic, announce a segment, or convey a full line of dialogue. Those roles have different demands. Short display text can be expressive; captions and explanatory overlays must remain easy to follow without taking over the picture.
As a practical production choice—not a rule prescribed by W3C—define a small hierarchy for your stream. For example, distinguish a headline from a name label and from captions through size, weight, placement, or a background treatment. Keep the differences consistent so viewers can recognize each role quickly.
Choose a typeface and size by testing, not guessing
There is no single typeface or pixel size that works for every stream. W3C WAI’s guidance is to consider “the font family, size, and contrast between the text and background.” The right choice depends on output resolution, platform scaling, device, viewing distance, language, and the text’s purpose.

- Use the actual typeface, language, numerals, and symbols your content needs; verify that glyphs display correctly.
- Preview at representative playback sizes, including a small screen, rather than judging only from a full-size editing canvas.
- Test captions and labels during motion and scene changes. A design that reads over one frame may disappear against the next.
- Compare candidates for legibility, hierarchy, picture coverage, channel identity, and support for the languages and symbols you use. These are practical decision criteria, not a formal W3C scoring system.
The reviewed W3C guidance does not prescribe a universal stream font, pixel size, or line-length formula. Treat a house style as your production decision and validate it in playback.
Check contrast against changing footage
Contrast is a relationship between the text and what sits behind it. For content within WCAG’s scope, Success Criterion 1.4.3 specifies a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large-scale text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. These are accessibility criteria for applicable web content, not a complete recipe for video readability or a guarantee across displays and viewing conditions. Check the intended text and background together across representative footage. If a shot changes from dark to bright, a fixed color pairing may lose contrast. A backing panel or other treatment can help stabilize the text background, but test the finished treatment rather than assuming an outline, shadow, or font weight will work in every scene. W3C WAI’s Audio Content and Video Content guidance likewise calls attention to font family, size, and contrast.
Use color as a supplement, not the only signal
If colors distinguish speakers, teams, status, or categories, provide another cue as well. Pair a color with a name, label, icon, or shape so the distinction does not depend on color perception alone. W3C WAI explains this principle in its Understanding Use of Color guidance.

Place captions and overlays where they do not hide the story
Check every text element against the important information in the frame: faces, gameplay indicators, charts, demonstrations, and other visual details viewers need. For captions in particular, W3C says they should not “obscure or obstruct relevant information in the video.” Reposition or restyle them when they cover essential content; there is no placement that is safe for every shot.
Live captions are synchronized text for audio content. They should communicate dialogue and relevant non-speech information, including speaker identification and significant sound effects when needed—not merely reproduce words in a decorative style. WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.4 requires captions for live audio content in synchronized media within the criterion’s scope and notes. Read W3C’s Understanding Captions (Live) for its explanation of that requirement.

Caption styling cannot make up for missing caption information. Captions are one part of accessible video publishing: W3C WAI also discusses transcripts, description of visual information, sign language, and accessible media players in its media accessibility guidance.

- List text roles. Separate short labels and headings from captions or longer explanations.
- Set a hierarchy. Choose how each role differs, using size, weight, placement, or a background treatment consistently.
- Preview over real footage. Check bright, dark, busy, and moving scenes in the intended output and delivery format.
- Inspect contrast and color cues. Apply WCAG contrast criteria where they govern the content, and ensure important distinctions have a non-color cue.
- Check placement and caption content. Keep text clear of important picture information, and include relevant dialogue and audio cues in captions.
- Review at realistic playback sizes. Confirm that type remains readable and that language characters and symbols render properly.
Typography is one part of a live video workflow
