This promotion grants a permanent license; a Free Weekend only provides temporary access. Check the offer wording rather than assuming every game labeled “free” is a permanent giveaway.
First, identify what “free” means on the offer
Steam has different kinds of free access, and only one of these is a time-limited giveaway of a permanent license.

|---|---|---|
| Free to Keep | A permanent license claimed during a limited promotion. Steamworks Documentation describes it as a time-limited promotion to acquire a game license for free. | The free package is removed from the store page. Claim it before the offer ends. |
| Free Weekend | Temporary access to the full game. Steamworks Documentation explains that this is event-based access, not a permanent claim. | After the event, the game may remain visible in your library, but you can only uninstall it unless you purchase the full version. |
| Free to Play | A game that can be downloaded and played for free, rather than a limited-time promotion. Steam Support says these games can be played without a subscription or credit card; individual games may still have their own limits or optional purchases. | There is no giveaway claim window in the sense of a Free to Keep promotion. The game’s own terms and availability apply. |
On Steam’s offer page, look for language indicating that you can keep or permanently acquire the game, and check the displayed end time. If the offer is a Free Weekend, downloading or playing it does not convert temporary access into a permanent license.
How to claim a Free to Keep game
- Sign in to Steam. Use the account where you want the game’s license. A claim made on another account does not place the license on your preferred one.
- Check the offer details. Confirm that it is a Free to Keep promotion and note the displayed end time. Steamworks says the free package is removed from the store page when the promotion ends.
- Complete the claim from the store offer while it is active. Follow the offer’s claim or add-to-account flow and finish the transaction. Do not treat a Free Weekend download as a claim.
- Verify the game in the library for that same account. Look for the title after completing the claim. If it is not visible, troubleshoot the library before concluding that the claim failed.
If the game is missing from your library
Steam Support recommends checking common account and visibility issues when a game seems to be missing. These checks can help locate an activated game, but they do not prove that a Free to Keep claim completed.

What delisting means for a claimed game
A completed Free to Keep claim is described as a permanent license under that promotion. That is different from a Free Weekend, which grants temporary access. The documentation does not make a universal promise that every claimed game will remain downloadable or playable indefinitely after it leaves sale. A license and the continued availability of a game’s files, online services, or functionality are not the same guarantee.

Steam separately notes that a redeemed gift can be removed if it is refunded because of fraud or a payment dispute. That specific gift-revocation case is not evidence that an ordinary store delisting cancels a Free to Keep license. See Steam Support’s gift redemption and removal guidance.

Steam says playing Free Weekends and Free to Play games does not remove limited-user restrictions. Claiming or playing one of these offers is not a promise that Steam community features will be unlocked. See Steam Support’s Free to Play FAQ.
