Find the exact model number and check its manual before adding anything but water to the tank or attempting to clean the steam circuit. Some models use a replaceable scale-control cartridge; others prohibit tank additives. Do not assume vinegar is safe.
Before you clean: identify the model and make it safe
Look for the brand and model number on the appliance label, then use that exact model’s manual and maintenance guidance. Instructions can differ even between products that look similar. For example, Kärcher’s SCV 4 uses a replaceable decalcification cartridge, while Tefal’s VP6557RH guidance says, “Never add any products to the water tank.” Kärcher’s SCV 4 manual and Tefal’s VP6557RH FAQ give model-specific instructions; neither establishes a rule for every steam vacuum mop.
- Switch the appliance off, unplug it, and let it cool before handling it. Follow the safety sequence in its own manual.
- Check which parts the manual allows you to remove, rinse, or wash. Do not immerse the appliance or wet its motor housing unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
- Empty the clean-water tank and dirty-water container only as directed. Dry removable parts before reassembly if the manual requires it.
Clean the head, pads, and other removable parts
Wash only parts that the manual identifies as washable. Mop heads, wipes, rollers, and filters are not interchangeable maintenance instructions: one model’s cleaning method may damage another’s components.
Tefal VP6557RH example
Tefal says to detach the head and wipe holder, rinse the head, and allow it to dry completely for 24 hours before reinstalling. Its wipes can be rinsed with tap water or machine-washed at 40°C. These directions apply to the VP6557RH; check your own manual for the permitted cleaning method and drying time.

Descale using the model’s scale-control system
Check whether your appliance uses a replaceable anti-scale filter or decalcification cartridge, and follow the manual’s replacement, indicator, and reset instructions. Do not pour vinegar, citric acid, or commercial descaler into the tank unless the manufacturer explicitly approves it for your exact model.
Tefal VP6557RH: replace the anti-calc filter
Tefal specifies replacing this model’s anti-calc filter every three months. That is a VP6557RH schedule, not a general interval for steam vacuum mops. Use its product guidance to confirm the replacement and any related steps: Tefal VP6557RH FAQ.

Kärcher SCV 4: replace the decalcification cartridge
The SCV 4 uses a replaceable decalcification cartridge, with an indicator and reset procedure described in its manual. After a cartridge change, steam output may take about 30 seconds after first steaming to reach its maximum while the cartridge fills. A briefly weak or uneven jet during that period does not, by itself, show that the appliance is faulty. Follow the SCV 4 manual for the cartridge procedure and indicator reset: Kärcher SCV 4 manual.

- Steam is weak or irregular: Check the manual’s scale-control indicator and maintenance steps. If you have just replaced an SCV 4 cartridge, allow for its stated initial filling period. If the problem persists after the model’s specified steps, consult troubleshooting guidance rather than running an unapproved cleaning mixture.
- Steam escapes at the side: Tefal advises checking whether the issue is related to the hose or accessories. If it continues, contact customer service or an authorized service center.
- Brown stains appear on the floor: Tefal says descaling products or other additives in the VP6557RH tank can cause brown marks and directs owners to an approved service center. Do not add more chemicals to try to clear the issue.
For a product-specific reference, consult Tefal’s VP6557RH FAQ or the Kärcher SCV 4 manual. If you cannot identify the model or find its maintenance instructions, contact the manufacturer before attempting to descale it.
