For vintage Nintendo systems, clean the console’s exterior with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water, but keep moisture and cleaning products away from cartridge connectors. Turn the system off before inserting or removing a cartridge, and let any cleaned component dry completely before using it. These instructions are documented for Nintendo’s NES, SNES, N64, and handheld systems; they should not be assumed to apply to every vintage console brand.

Before you clean: identify the surface and system

Exterior plastic and cartridge electrical contacts need different care. Nintendo’s guidance for NES, SNES, and N64 components allows a soft, slightly damp cloth with water only. For Game Pak connectors, Nintendo warns against touching, blowing on, wetting, or getting dirt on the contacts, and says not to use solvents.

These are Nintendo-specific instructions, not a universal method for every vintage system. If you own a console from another manufacturer, check that model’s own care guidance rather than transferring Nintendo’s directions to it.

Clean the outside of a Nintendo NES, SNES, or N64

  1. Turn the console off before handling a cartridge. If you are cleaning a handheld, power it off and unplug accessories first.
  2. Use a soft cloth, such as a clean cotton cloth, slightly dampened with water. Do not pour liquid onto the system or use a saturated cloth.
  3. Wipe the exterior surfaces gently. Keep liquid away from openings, cartridge slots, and connectors; Nintendo’s instructions do not authorize cleaning inside the system.
  4. Allow the component to dry completely before using it again.

Nintendo’s support guidance specifies water only and says to avoid benzene, paint thinner, alcohol, and other solvents when cleaning Game Paks. The guidance is available on Nintendo’s NES, SNES, and N64 cleaning page.

Handle cartridge connectors carefully

  1. Switch the console off before removing or inserting a cartridge.
  2. Before insertion, inspect the cartridge edge connector for foreign material. Do not force a cartridge into the slot.
  3. Avoid touching the connector, blowing on it, or allowing it to get wet or dirty.
  4. Do not clean Game Pak connectors with alcohol or another solvent. Nintendo’s guidance explicitly says: “Do not clean with benzene, paint thinner, alcohol or any other solvent.”

Nintendo also recommends checking the edge connector before insertion and keeping it clean and dry. Its Game Boy Advance safety information repeats connector inspection and the solvent warning.

Clean a vintage Nintendo handheld

Nintendo’s handheld-care guidance covers systems including Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. Power off the system and unplug accessories before cleaning. Do not pour liquid directly onto the handheld or submerge it, and make sure it is completely dry before turning it on again. See Nintendo’s handheld system care guidance.

What not to assume about older cleaning advice

An archived NES Cleaning Kit manual describes a model-specific method involving an isopropyl alcohol and water mixture. That historical kit instruction conflicts with Nintendo’s current general warning not to clean Game Paks with alcohol or other solvents. It is not a sound basis for recommending alcohol on cartridge contacts or for treating one method as safe across vintage systems. The manual is available from a third-party NES document archive.

These care instructions cover routine exterior cleaning and basic cartridge handling. They do not establish a safe general procedure for opening a console, removing corrosion, replacing batteries, or cleaning the internals of every vintage model.
