To turn a moment from your own YouTube video into a Short, use YouTube Studio on desktop for transcript or timeline-based selection, or choose Remix > Edit into a Short in the YouTube mobile app if the video is eligible. For someone else’s video, use YouTube’s available remix tools rather than downloading and re-uploading it.
Choose the clipping method that fits your video

YouTube’s computer-upload guidance allows Shorts up to three minutes long, provided the video is square or vertical. This is a separate upload limit; the mobile Edit into a Short workflow has its own 60-second source-selection limit. YouTube’s computer upload guidance and mobile instructions describe these limits.
Make a Short from your own video in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content > Videos.
- Select the long-form video you want to clip.
- Open Clips and Shorts in the left menu.
- Select Create clip or Short, then choose Short.
- Set the segment. You can select transcript text and confirm it, or enter start and end timestamps in the timeline editor. If an AI-powered suggestion appears, you can choose it and adjust its boundaries.
- Review the segment and create a draft. Finish the Short’s upload details before publishing.
AI-powered suggestions and outlines are not available to everyone. YouTube lists availability for creators in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, with English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish listed as supported languages. If the option is absent, use transcript or timeline selection instead. YouTube does not show publication or revision dates for its Studio Clips & Shorts instructions.
Use Edit into a Short in the mobile app
- Open your own eligible long-form video in the YouTube mobile app.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds from the original video.
- Continue to the Shorts tools, make any desired edits such as adding text or filters, and upload.
This route is limited to long-form public videos you uploaded. It does not work for private or unlisted uploads or videos with third-party copyright claims. Shorts sampling must also be allowed for the video; check that setting in YouTube Studio if the option is missing. Shorts made this way link back to the original video, which YouTube says gives new viewers a way to discover it. One limitation: You cannot use Audio Library music or other sounds on Shorts created from your own videos through Edit into a Short. See YouTube’s mobile instructions for details.

Clip someone else’s video using YouTube remix tools
On an eligible video or Short in the mobile app, open Remix and choose the available tool: Cut, Green Screen, Collab or Use this sound. The controls shown can vary with the source and app interface.
Remixing is conditional, not a blanket permission to reuse any video. Availability can depend on privacy settings, copyright claims, creator settings and music licenses; the source may later be deleted or have remixing restricted. Downloading someone else’s video and uploading it independently is different from using YouTube’s remix tools. YouTube warns that protected content used in a Short created outside its tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed following a valid copyright takedown request. Credit or a short excerpt does not automatically make reuse lawful. Review YouTube’s remix guidance and get permission where needed.

Make the clipped moment work as a Short
- Choose a self-contained moment: a clear payoff, useful tip, surprising reaction or complete beat is easier to follow than a clip that depends on missing context.
- Check the opening frame and first words. Avoid cutting off the setup needed to understand what happens.
- Preview the ending so the clip feels intentional rather than abruptly chopped.
- Keep the main subject legible in a square or vertical frame. Recheck framing before publishing, especially if the original was wide.
- For a computer upload, confirm the finished Short is square or vertical and no longer than three minutes under YouTube’s upload guidance.
These are practical editing checks, not guarantees of reach or performance.
Fix common problems
“Edit into a Short” is missing
Confirm that the source is your own long-form video, is public, has no third-party copyright claim, and allows Shorts sampling. The feature is available from the video watch page in the mobile app; it is not the Studio desktop workflow. See YouTube’s eligibility guidance.

The Studio AI suggestion option is missing
AI suggestions are limited by country and language. Use the transcript or timeline controls if the option is not offered for your account or video.
A remix option or sound is unavailable
The source creator’s settings, privacy status, copyright claims or music licenses may prevent a particular remix. Try another available Remix tool only if it is offered, or use content you own or have permission to use; do not assume a missing control can be bypassed by downloading the video.

The selected clip feels confusing or cuts off too sharply
Adjust the in and out points, restore the missing setup, and preview the result in its intended square or vertical frame before publishing.
