Then agree in writing on the deliverables, schedule, revision process, payment terms, credit, and usage rights before work begins. Do not assume that permission to use art on a streaming platform also covers merchandise or other commercial uses.
Decide what you need before contacting an artist
Start with a clear asset list: for example, emotes, badges, an overlay, a logo, an avatar, or a character illustration. Identify the platform or platforms where each item will appear and the job it needs to do—for example, make your channel recognizable, label recurring segments, or give viewers a set of emotes.
Write down your style direction, budget range, and deadline. Decide whether you want the artist to interpret a broad idea or follow a detailed design. If you have required text, colors, character details, variants, or elements to avoid, include them. A buyer guide recommends resolving the format, style, use, budget, and timing before outreach (StreamScheme’s buyer guide).
Make a one-page brief
- Asset types, quantity, and variants.
- Channel name, platform or platforms, and where each asset will appear.
- Audience or brand context, visual direction, and reference images.
- What you like about each reference; do not leave the artist to guess which details matter.
- Required text, colors, dimensions or platform requirements, and anything that must not appear.
- Deadline, budget range, and intended uses, including monetized content or merchandise if relevant.
Choose an artist whose work and terms fit
Review finished work at a size and in a context similar to your intended use. An illustration that looks strong at full size may not read clearly as a small emote or badge. Check whether the artist accepts your type of project and whether commissions are open; availability and terms can change, so confirm them directly.

You can contact artists directly or look through a marketplace. These routes do not necessarily offer the same workflow, fees, or dispute handling. Read the current terms of the artist and any marketplace involved rather than assuming one arrangement applies everywhere.
Request a quote with a written scope
Ask the artist to confirm the work included before you pay. A useful quote states the asset count, dimensions, file formats, whether editable or source files are included, delivery stages, schedule, revisions, payment timing, and any add-on charges. Ask what counts as an included revision and what would be treated as new work, such as an additional concept or variant.

Artists set their own prices and bundles; individual offers are not a reliable market average. For context, artist pages accessed for this topic included examples of emotes at $60 each and overlay or thumbnail art at $200, while another listed animated emotes at €70 each and vector logo design from €200. Treat these as provider-specific examples, not a typical rate, and request a current quote from the artist you are considering.
Questions to settle before payment
- What exactly will be delivered, in what dimensions and formats?
- Are layered, editable, or source files included, or only final exports?
- What are the expected queue time and delivery date? Is a priority option available?
- Which review stages are included, and how many changes can you request at each stage?
- What counts as a correction within scope, and what incurs an extra charge?
- When is payment due? Is it upfront or split into stages?
- What happens if you or the artist cancel, or the schedule changes?
- May the artist show sketches or final work in a portfolio, and can you request privacy?
- How should the artist be credited?
Artist terms vary: examples published by artists include specified PNG sizes and overlay deliverables, sketch approval, limits on minor changes after approval, upfront payment, and an optional split for larger commissions. These are examples, not standard terms. Have the chosen artist confirm the process that applies to your project.

Agree on usage rights before work starts
Name the specific uses you want in the agreement rather than relying on a phrase such as “stream use” or “commercial rights.” Ask separately about streaming on Twitch or YouTube, monetized channel content, social-media promotion, merchandise, print sales, and future adaptations. Confirm who may modify the work and whether the artist may display it publicly.
Licenses differ by artist. One artist may allow specified platform uses but require a separate merchandise license; another may include platform use while charging separately for other commercial uses. Those examples do not establish a universal rule. If you later want to expand the use—for instance, from channel graphics to products for sale—ask the artist before doing so.

Review the work and archive the final delivery
Follow the review stages you agreed on. Give consolidated, specific feedback at each stage, and distinguish an in-scope adjustment from a request for a new concept or extra asset. Before accepting delivery, check the files against the quote: asset count, formats, dimensions, variants, and any included source files.
Keep the agreement, invoice, license terms, attribution details, and final exports together. Record how the artist wants to be credited so that the credit is not lost when you publish or update your channel.

If the commission includes Twitch emotes
Twitch documents emote-artist attribution controls and a channel-specific Artist Badge for up to five contributors. Whether attribution appears also depends on artist settings and Twitch controls. Check Twitch’s current Artist Badge and emote attribution guidance when arranging credit.
Use this checklist to compare quotes
- Portfolio style and fit for your channel and intended display size.
- Included assets, variants, formats, dimensions, and editable files.
- Queue, deadline, and any priority option.
- Review stages, revision limits, and extra-work charges.
- Total cost, including licensing, add-ons, and payment fees.
- Payment schedule, cancellation, and refund terms.
- Permissions for streaming, promotion, monetized content, and merchandise.
- Credit, privacy, and portfolio-display terms.
