How to Compare Cloud Bandwidth Limits for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the bitrate YouTube recommends for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then compare it with the cloud service’s sustained outbound capacity for the exact VM size, region, destination path, and single-stream flow—not just its advertised maximum. Check baseline versus burst performance, per-flow limits, packet-processing headroom, lifecycle rules, and data-transfer billing separately; validate the setup with a representative stream test before relying on it around the clock.

What “bandwidth” means for a 24/7 YouTube stream

For an ordinary YouTube live workflow, the cloud encoder sends one contribution feed to YouTube’s ingest servers. YouTube handles delivery of that stream to viewers. Size the encoder’s outbound connection for the feed it sends; do not multiply its bitrate by your expected audience. If your cloud setup also encodes or distributes video directly to viewers, that is a separate delivery workload with separate capacity and billing.

Two different measurements are often confused:

  • Throughput or bandwidth capacity is a rate, usually expressed in Mbps or Gbps. It describes how quickly a VM can send data.
  • Data transfer is accumulated traffic over time, usually measured in GB or TB. A VM can have ample throughput yet incur substantial egress charges for a continuous stream.

A provider’s published network limit is not a guarantee that one stream will sustain that rate over the public internet. The exact instance, destination, flow pattern, congestion, workload, and configuration matter.

1. Set the encoder’s target rate first

Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to send. Its recommendations vary by those settings; for example, its current guidance lists 14 Mbps for H.264 video at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps. Those are recommended video bitrates, not total cloud capacity requirements or provider performance measurements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube recommends RTMPS and CBR in its encoder guidance. Allow additional headroom above the target for protocol overhead and operating variation rather than selecting a VM whose published ceiling barely equals the video bitrate. YouTube also advises a representative pre-stream test and monitoring stream health during the event.

2. Compare the cloud limit that actually applies

For each candidate service, identify the exact VM size and region, then establish the egress path to the public internet and the relevant limit for one encoder connection. Read the provider’s qualifications alongside the headline number.

Provider documentation What to check Important qualification
Google Cloud Compute Engine network bandwidth Instance egress maximums, external per-flow limit, destination routing, and project-level internet-egress quotas. Google documents a 3 Gbps maximum external egress per unique 5-tuple flow for most machine series, with H3 and H4D at 1 Gbps per flow. That is a documented limit, not a promise of sustained internet throughput; instance and project limits also apply.
Amazon EC2 instance network bandwidth Selected instance’s baseline, network I/O credits, internet-gateway path, and single-flow constraints. For many instance sizes with 16 or fewer vCPUs, AWS documents baseline bandwidth with credits for temporary bursts. Burst use is limited—typically 5 to 60 minutes depending on size—so a 24/7 stream should fit baseline capacity.
Azure VM network throughput Outbound bandwidth allocation for the selected VM and how traffic across its network interfaces is aggregated. Azure measures allocated bandwidth on egress. Accelerated networking may help reach the allocation, but does not increase it; actual throughput depends on congestion, workload, and settings.

Provider figures may describe a maximum, allocation, or expected throughput rather than a tested sustained rate. For context, Azure’s Dasv4 size table lists expected network bandwidth of 2,000 Mbps for Standard_D2as_v4 and 40,000 Mbps for Standard_D96as_v4; Microsoft cautions that upper limits are not guaranteed. These family-specific figures should not be generalized to other sizes or treated as a performance test.

3. Check the limits beyond the headline number

Per-flow ceilings

A VM’s total bandwidth and the maximum bandwidth available to one connection can differ. A single encoder-to-ingest flow may not use the VM’s entire advertised capacity. Google documents external per-flow limits, while AWS also describes single-flow constraints. For normal YouTube encoder bitrates, these ceilings are usually far above the video rate, but they matter when interpreting how a provider defines its maximum.

Baseline, burst, and credits

Do not plan continuous operation around temporary burst capacity. On applicable EC2 sizes, network I/O credits can raise throughput above baseline for a limited period; AWS says that period is typically 5–60 minutes depending on instance size. Confirm the baseline and credit behavior of the particular instance rather than assuming an “up to” rate will persist.

Packet processing and workload

Network throughput is only one constraint. CPU load, packet-processing capacity, application settings, network path, and congestion can affect the rate the encoder sustains. Leave operational headroom and test with the same encoder, settings, destination path, and representative workload you plan to use.

Continuous-service lifecycle

Check restart, maintenance, quota, and recovery behavior for the specific service—not just its network specification. Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation says a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping. This rule applies to that managed API; it is not a general limit on Compute Engine VMs or YouTube.

4. Estimate data transfer separately from capacity

For a rough decimal-volume estimate, multiply the video bitrate in Mbps by 0.45 to approximate GB sent per day, before protocol overhead. At 14 Mbps, that is about 6.3 GB/day. This is arithmetic from a continuous bitrate and time, not a provider usage statistic or an egress-price estimate; actual billed transfer can differ because of overhead, ancillary traffic, and billing rules.

Before choosing a service, check its current data-transfer pricing and allowances for the exact region, service, and account. A throughput limit expressed in Mbps or Gbps does not tell you how much transfer is included or what the stream will cost. Use the provider’s current pricing calculator or account quote; a universal cross-provider egress price cannot be inferred from bandwidth documentation.

5. Validate the configuration before relying on it

  1. Choose the stream profile. Record codec, resolution, frame rate, and YouTube’s current recommended bitrate for that combination.
  2. Select the exact VM and region. Read the provider’s documentation for external egress, per-flow restrictions, baseline throughput, burst policy, and applicable quotas.
  3. Confirm the path and workload. Account for the encoder’s CPU and packet-processing needs, the destination path, and any other outbound traffic sharing the VM.
  4. Run a representative test. Send the intended stream to YouTube using the planned settings. YouTube recommends a speed test and a pre-stream test; check stream health rather than treating a speed-test result alone as proof of continuous stability.
  5. Observe an extended run. Monitor encoder output, dropped frames or connection interruptions, VM network metrics, and any credit or quota behavior. An initial successful connection does not establish that a burstable configuration can sustain a 24/7 workload.
  6. Review continuity and billing. Verify recovery and restart behavior for the selected service, then estimate monthly transfer using the provider’s current regional terms.

When a VM is not the whole answer

A VM that sends one contribution stream to YouTube is different from a cloud video stack that also encodes or distributes a channel to viewers. AWS describes an architecture using MediaLive to encode, MediaPackage to prepare live outputs, and CloudFront to deliver them. That kind of viewer-delivery workflow adds components and a separate workload; it is not required merely to send an encoder feed to YouTube.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded videos without keeping a VM or home computer running, StreamNeo is a managed option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs the uploaded video from the cloud, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home.
  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
