How to Compare QSSR and Native Resolution on PS5 Without Changing Your TV Setup

A fair PS5 QSSR comparison changes only the game’s graphics option. Keep your TV and console output settings fixed, compare the same scene, and judge detail and motion separately.

To compare QSSR with native-resolution rendering fairly, keep your TV, PS5 video-output settings, viewing position, and in-game scene the same; change only the game’s graphics option. QSSR is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling feature for supported PS5 games, but Sony has not published a controlled head-to-head result showing that it always looks better than native rendering.

What QSSR means on PS5

Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-guided upscaling technology for standard PS5. Sony says it grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD, and uses a streamlined neural-network architecture with a hand-tuned implementation intended to make the most of PS5 performance. Sony’s stated aim is improved image detail and stability, not a guarantee that every game or scene will look better.

In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. Support is game-specific; do not assume the option is available in every PS5 title.

How to compare the modes without changing your TV

  1. Choose a supported game and record the conditions. Confirm that the game’s current version offers QSSR and the mode you want to compare. Note the game, patch or version if available, PS5 model, and selected graphics mode.
  2. Leave the TV setup alone. Keep the same TV and HDMI connection, picture mode, sharpness, motion processing, HDR configuration, and seating position for both observations.
  3. Keep the PS5 output settings fixed. To inspect the output information or settings, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony says PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically; changing output settings during the comparison could confound it. Sony also notes that 1440p output requires a display that supports 1440p. See PlayStation’s PS5 resolution support guide.
  4. Use the same scene and change only the game option. Match the camera angle, movement, and in-game mode as closely as possible. Toggle between QSSR and native resolution—or the game’s equivalent named options—and revisit the same scene.
  5. Look at different image qualities separately. Check fine detail, edge quality, stability during motion, shimmering, and visible reconstruction artifacts. If performance or frame pacing matters, assess it separately rather than inferring it from a still image.
  6. Repeat the switch. Let the scene settle and alternate modes several times. Describe what you saw and the conditions; call it a practical comparison, not a lab measurement, unless you used instrumented, controlled testing.

What to look for in the image

  • Fine detail: Inspect small textures and distant elements in the same scene. Note whether details are clearer, softer, or changed between modes.
  • Edges: Look for jaggedness, softness, or instability around thin lines and object boundaries.
  • Motion stability: Watch the same moving objects or camera pans for shimmering or details that appear to change over time. A single still frame cannot show all temporal behavior.
  • Reconstruction artifacts: Record visible glitches or unexpected changes rather than treating every difference as an improvement.
  • Performance: Keep visual impressions distinct from frame-rate or frame-pacing claims. Report performance only if you have measured it, with the method and conditions.

Why there is no universal winner yet

Sony says QSSR is intended to improve image detail and stability. Insomniac Games, quoted in Sony’s announcement, says QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Those are qualitative statements, not a controlled comparison against native rendering.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The announcement does not provide a QSSR-versus-native test, per-game internal-render-resolution figures, pixel-count analysis, an image-quality score, or a quantified frame-rate result. Without those data, there is no basis for claiming that QSSR always wins—or that native resolution always looks better. Results may depend on the game, its implementation, scene, and selected mode. A useful report states the title, version, modes, output conditions, and observed differences.
