To compare the two fairly, use the same channel, date range, livestream reporting view and revenue metric, then isolate viewers by geography in YouTube Analytics. For an ads-only comparison, use estimated ad revenue—not RPM or advertiser CPM.
What a fair India–US comparison can tell you
YouTube says geography can affect advertiser costs because advertisers choose which geographies to target and ad-market competition varies. Seasonality and ad-format mix also influence CPM. That does not establish a fixed creator payout for an Indian or US view. Your result depends on the channel, audience, content, stream, date range and ad delivery.
YouTube lists both India and the United States as monetized markets. That means advertisers can target those markets; it does not mean they have equal rates or that YouTube publishes a country-by-country creator payout benchmark. YouTube’s official materials do not provide a current, apples-to-apples India-versus-US livestream CPM, RPM or creator-revenue figure with a sample and methodology. Do not infer one from market inclusion. YouTube’s monetized-markets list
Choose the metric that answers your question
| Metric | What it measures | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated ad revenue | Estimated revenue from ads during the selected period and content. | An ads-only comparison of what the channel earned from livestreams and replays. |
| RPM | Creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s revenue share. It can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and includes views that were not monetized. | Overall creator revenue per 1,000 views, not an ads-only comparison. |
| CPM | Advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s revenue share. | Understanding advertiser-side ad pricing, not calculating creator income from total views. |
| Playback-based CPM | Advertiser cost per 1,000 playbacks where an ad was shown. | Comparing the cost of ad-supported playbacks; it is not creator receipts per 1,000 total views. |
RPM is generally lower than CPM because the metrics have different denominators and perspectives: RPM is creator revenue across views, including non-monetized views, while CPM is advertiser cost for ad impressions before revenue share. Do not multiply CPM by total views to estimate creator earnings. YouTube explains these definitions and other ad-revenue factors in Understand ad revenue analytics.

Compare livestreams in YouTube Analytics
- Check eligibility. Confirm the channel is monetized and the stream is eligible for Watch Page ads. Livestream Watch Page ad and Premium revenue requires accepting YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Review YouTube Partner Program eligibility and the monetization modules.
- Open YouTube Analytics and isolate live content. Select the Live filter to view livestreams and their replays. YouTube says this view includes the livestream and replay ad-revenue breakdown. Do not mix livestream results with ordinary uploads or Shorts.
- Select estimated ad revenue for the ads-only question. Use RPM only if you want to compare broader revenue per 1,000 views, and label it as such. Keep memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Premium revenue distinct if the question is specifically ad revenue.
- Use the same date window for both geographies. Compare India and US viewer geography on the same channel and comparable streams. Seasonality can change ad demand, so avoid comparing different periods as if geography were the only difference.
- Read the denominator and content scope carefully. Separate total views from monetized playbacks and ad impressions; distinguish a live broadcast from its replay if the report allows it. If audience size, stream subject or format differs, state that rather than presenting raw country totals as a rate comparison.
- Report the result as channel-specific. Name the date range, geography, content scope and metric. For example: “On this channel’s live streams and replays during [date range], estimated ad revenue from viewers in India was [observed amount] and from viewers in the US was [observed amount].” This describes that channel’s Analytics results, not a platform-wide country rate.

Why views do not translate directly into ad revenue
A view is not necessarily an ad impression or a monetized playback. An ad may not serve because the stream is ineligible or monetization is off, no suitable ad is available, the viewer does not match targeting, the viewer recently saw an ad, or the viewer has YouTube Premium. YouTube states plainly: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.”

On a monetized livestream with monetization enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically on; mid-rolls can be inserted automatically or manually. The ad system still decides whether a given available slot actually receives an ad. YouTube also says ads are turned off for a stream embedded with auto-start on an external site. These controls affect delivery, not a guaranteed India or US rate. YouTube’s live monetization guidance describes these controls and reporting.
Keep ad revenue separate from other income
YouTube creators may also earn from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and YouTube Premium. RPM can include these sources, so it is broader than estimated ad revenue. Sponsorships and merchandise are outside the RPM figure YouTube describes. For an ads-only country comparison, do not fold these revenue streams into the result. See YouTube’s guides to earning money on YouTube and livestream earning options.

What YouTube’s revenue share does—and does not—mean
YouTube says the partner agreement does not guarantee how much, or whether, a creator will be paid; earnings come from a share of advertising revenue generated by viewers watching content. For partners who accept Watch Page Monetization, YouTube states that the creator share is 55% of net revenues from ads displayed or streamed on public Watch Page videos. This is a program revenue-share term, not a promised effective CPM, per-view payout or India–US rate. Read YouTube’s partner earnings overview.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling CPM a creator payout: CPM is advertiser-side and before revenue share; use estimated ad revenue for ads-only receipts.
- Multiplying CPM by all views: views are not the same as ad impressions or monetized playbacks.
- Treating RPM as ads-only: RPM can include several YouTube revenue sources and non-monetized views.
- Comparing different periods or content: season, format and audience differences can confound geography.
- Turning one channel’s results into a national benchmark: report the channel, date range, metric and geography instead.
- Assuming every live ad slot fills: YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.
