Compare the separate estimated revenue figures for Shopping affiliate earnings and Watch Page Ads over the same dates and, as closely as YouTube Studio allows, the same content. For ad revenue from live streams and replays, use Studio Analytics’ Live filter. Do not use total RPM as a stand-in for ad revenue: it combines multiple revenue sources and all views, including views without monetized ads.
Compare the two revenue sources in YouTube Studio
- Choose a date range. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the dates you want to evaluate. Use the same range for both revenue figures.
- Find live and replay ad revenue. Use the Live filter when examining ad revenue from live streams and live replays. In the revenue-source breakdown, look for Watch Page Ads.
- Find Shopping earnings. In the same period’s revenue-source breakdown, inspect Shopping affiliate estimated revenue. Eligible creators may earn commissions on qualifying purchases attributed to products tagged in live streams.
- Align the content scope as closely as possible. Compare the same stream or content where Studio offers that level of detail. YouTube’s help documentation describes revenue-source and live/replay reporting, but does not establish that every creator can isolate Shopping affiliate revenue for one exact 24/7 stream in precisely the same way as live/replay ad revenue. Check the breakdown available in your own channel before presenting a stream-level result.
- Recheck estimates later. Shopping affiliate revenue can change because of returns and cancellations, and sellers validate commissions on retailer-specific schedules. YouTube also adjusts estimated partner revenue, including for invalid traffic and claims or disputes.
YouTube’s [partner earnings overview](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/72902) states that partners who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net revenue from Watch Page Ads. That share describes how revenue is allocated; it is not a promised ad yield, a measure of stream performance, or a Shopping commission rate.
Keep ad revenue, RPM, and Shopping commissions distinct
Watch Page Ads and Shopping affiliate revenue are different Analytics sources, so compare their own estimated revenue lines rather than inferring one from another. YouTube defines RPM as revenue after YouTube’s share per 1,000 views, but RPM includes several sources—such as ads, Premium, memberships, Supers, and other defined revenue—and uses all views, including views that did not show a monetized ad. YouTube notes that “RPM is a useful monetization metric for creators, but it can’t tell your whole revenue story.” See [Understand ad revenue analytics](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9314357).
Studio’s Shopping commission rates are estimates based on current rates. The commission payout reflects the rate active when the purchase occurs, and rates can change; do not assume a displayed rate will apply to every sale. Check the current figures in Studio and consult [YouTube’s Shopping affiliate program guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/13376398) for eligibility and program details.

Make an optional apples-to-apples rate comparison
If aligned totals are available, you can calculate your own comparison rates to account for different stream lengths or view counts. These are creator-derived calculations, not official YouTube metrics:
- Revenue per 1,000 live views: divide each revenue-source total by the same live-view count, then multiply by 1,000. Use a consistent view count and date range for both figures.
- Revenue per live hour: divide each revenue-source total by the hours included in the same comparison period. State which hours and content you counted.
Label the results clearly as your calculations. They do not replace YouTube’s RPM definition, and a rate built from estimates can shift when revenue is adjusted or affiliate sales are validated.

Interpret the result without assuming a winner
- More streaming time does not guarantee more ad revenue. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve an ad. A 24-hour broadcast therefore does not mean 24 hours of continuously monetized impressions. See [Monetize your live stream](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7385599).
- Shopping results depend on purchases and changing terms. Tagged products can generate eligible commissions, but traffic alone does not establish that viewers bought them. Current commission rates and purchase attribution matter.
- Estimated affiliate earnings are provisional. YouTube describes seller lock-in periods as typically 30–90 days, but this is not a universal guarantee; actual validation timing depends on retailer terms. - Do not confuse different revenue shares. YouTube’s stated 70% of net revenues for memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks applies to those Commerce Product Module fan-funding features—not to Shopping affiliate commissions.
There is no universal winner between Shopping and ads. The answer depends on the channel’s own reporting, traffic, relevant product purchases, current commission rates, ad delivery, and later validation or revenue adjustments.
