To complete Scholar’s Remembrance in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN, unlock Scholar, advance the Journal to each Remembrance chapter, retrieve the Vassal’s Journal during the Balancers expedition, finish the Great Hollow objective, then activate the final objective and defeat Dreglord as Scholar. Afterward, speak with Undertaker and return to Scholar’s desk. Scholar and the related quest content require The Forsaken Hollows DLC.

How to unlock Scholar

With The Forsaken Hollows content available, defeat Tricephalos, then speak to the Iron Menial in Roundtable Hold. The Iron Menial has a message from the Small Jar Merchant; this conversation unlocks Scholar and Undertaker as playable Nightfarers. Bandai Namco’s unlock instructions also say that access to the Balancers and the Great Hollow Shifting Earth requires defeating at least two base-game bosses, including Tricephalos, and making both new Nightfarers playable. The publisher lists the game for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, and PC on its ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN page.

How Scholar’s Journal chapters unlock

Scholar’s Remembrance is a chapter-gated quest. A walkthrough guide describes this progression; use the in-game Journal as the authority on which task is currently available, since a generic expedition or boss clear does not necessarily satisfy the next chapter’s condition.

Journal chapter Guide-described trigger
1 Available after unlocking Scholar.
2 and 3 Follow expeditions as Scholar, whether the expedition succeeds or not.
4 Follows the first Remembrance.
5 and 7 Require a Nightlord victory.
6 Follows the second Remembrance.
8 Follows the Balancers expedition.
9 Follows final Remembrance progression, including Dreglord.

These are guide-supported triggers, not a guarantee that a chapter will appear regardless of your current Journal state. Check the Journal before repeating an expedition.

Chapter 3: Find the Vassal’s Journal under the marsh

  1. Start Scholar’s Remembrance and read the paper scrap on Scholar’s desk. It assigns the personal objective to search the underground chamber below the marsh.
  2. Launch the Balancers expedition and follow its red objective marker to the poison-swamp fort. The fort’s position may vary; follow the marker rather than relying on a fixed compass direction.
  3. Enter the sinking ruin and drop into the cave below. After the first ledge, head right into the basement room, then jump down to the desk and take the Vassal’s Journal.
  4. Return to Roundtable Hold. The guide says you can return after defeating the final boss or by dying. At Scholar’s desk in the chapel, read the Vassal’s Journal.
  5. Speak to Undertaker around the corner, then to the Iron Menial at the chapel entrance. Return to Undertaker, choose “I have something I’d like to ask of you,” and exhaust the available dialogue.

This completes the Remembrance step, awards Scholar’s Chalice, and opens Chapter 4, according to the walkthrough.

Chapter 5: Complete the Great Hollow objective

  1. In Roundtable Hold, speak to the Small Jar and choose the option to be shown to the Great Hollow.
  2. In the church-like area, climb the stairways and walkways to the upper level. Look for the large suspended crystal.
  3. Use the gap in the railing to jump onto the crystal, then climb onto the rafters and enter the opening in the brick wall. Leave the area when Scholar’s message says to investigate the source of the noise.
  4. Drop down and defeat the encounter with two knights and the Godskin Apostle identified by the walkthrough as Marauder. The guide suggests using the stairs to separate the enemies; that is a tactic, not a quest requirement.
  5. Return to the rafters and hidden room. Interact with its four glowing objects and with the knight inside the large crystal.

The walkthrough says this returns you to Roundtable Hold, completes the Remembrance step, advances the Journal, and awards the Cleansing Tear Relic. It also warns that dying in this special Great Hollow section means restarting that section.

Final objective: defeat Dreglord as Scholar

  1. Before launching the expedition, check that Scholar’s final personal objective is active in the Journal or objective indicator.
  2. Complete the Dreglord expedition as Scholar.
  3. After returning to Roundtable Hold, speak with Undertaker in the chapel, then return to Scholar’s desk to conclude the Remembrance.

The available walkthrough directions establish these final steps but do not establish every interaction in the final memory area. Do not assume a particular room sequence: follow the active in-game objective and the Journal.

If a Remembrance chapter has not appeared

  • Scholar is not playable: Confirm access to The Forsaken Hollows, defeat Tricephalos, and speak with the Iron Menial in Roundtable Hold.
  • The next Journal chapter is missing: Check the current chapter’s listed task and the conditions above. Some chapters depend on a Nightlord victory or completion of a specific Remembrance, not merely finishing another expedition.
  • The Vassal’s Journal task is active: Enter Balancers, follow the red marker to the marsh fort, and retrieve the journal from the basement desk before returning to Scholar’s desk and completing the conversations.
  • The Great Hollow task is active: Complete the crystal, rafters, hidden-room and encounter sequence, then interact with all four glowing objects and the crystal-bound knight.
  • The final Dreglord task is active: Verify the objective is active before the expedition. The guide’s directions require Dreglord completion as Scholar, then Undertaker and Scholar’s desk.

The step-by-step route above comes from secondary walkthroughs; Bandai Namco’s official page documents the unlock requirements rather than every Remembrance interaction. The official site lists Nightreign updates through March 31, 2026, but the reviewed patch information does not establish whether later changes affected these specific quest steps.
