The Mega Rayquaza Elite Raid Day took place on Saturday, June 29, 2024, so its raid windows and Timed Research are no longer available. During the event, Trainers had to battle in person, defeat Mega Rayquaza, catch it, and finish the free Timed Research before its timer expired to claim a Meteorite. Rayquaza also needs Dragon Ascent, taught with a Meteorite, and Mega Energy before it can Mega Evolve.
When the event took place
Pokémon GO announced four Elite Raid start times on June 29, 2024: 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m. local time. Each Mega Rayquaza appeared for 45 minutes after its Elite Raid egg hatched. These were historical event times, not a current schedule. See the official event announcement.

How Trainers completed the event

Find an in-person raid and plan around its window
Elite Raids could only be joined in person; Remote Raid Passes were not accepted. Trainers needed to reach a participating raid location and battle within the 45-minute boss window after the egg hatched. Coordinating with nearby players ahead of time helped ensure a group was ready.

Bring a prepared team and coordinate players
Mega Legendary Raids are more difficult than standard raids and ordinary Mega Raids. Pokémon GO recommends Mega Evolving a Pokémon in the raid party, inviting friends, or both. The Mega Raid help page explains the general preparation and reward mechanics.

Ice attacks are the leading counter focus in the Pokémon GO Hub guide; Fairy, Rock, and Dragon attacks are also listed as weaknesses. The guide’s estimate of roughly six to seven high-level Trainers is not an official minimum or a guarantee: the group needed depends on counter quality and coordination. Defeating Mega Rayquaza opened a catch encounter. Mega Raid victories also awarded Mega Energy, with the amount depending on how quickly the boss was defeated, according to Pokémon GO’s Mega Raid guidance.

Finish and claim the Timed Research reward
The event’s free Timed Research awarded a Meteorite. Timed Research expires, so tasks had to be completed and the reward claimed before the timer ran out. The Meteorite was the key reward for preparing Rayquaza to Mega Evolve.
How the Meteorite unlocks Mega Rayquaza
Rayquaza cannot Mega Evolve with Mega Energy alone: it must know the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent as well. A Meteorite teaches Dragon Ascent; Charge TMs and Elite Charge TMs cannot teach the move. Once Rayquaza knows Dragon Ascent and the Trainer has the required Mega Energy, it can Mega Evolve. Pokémon GO’s current Mega Evolution support instructions describe the prerequisite.

What matters most for a successful attempt
- Access: Be at the raid in person; a Remote Raid Pass did not work for an Elite Raid.
- Timing: The boss was available for 45 minutes after the egg hatched.
- Battle readiness: Prioritize Ice attacks and choose a group based on team strength, not a fixed headcount.
- Event completion: Claim the Meteorite from the free Timed Research before it expired.
- Mega Evolution: Use the Meteorite to teach Dragon Ascent, and have Mega Energy available.
A phone power bank could be useful during a long outdoor play session, but it was optional and not required to participate.
