To use a Razer MMO mouse’s side buttons for World of Warcraft abilities, map each mouse button to a keyboard key in Razer Synapse, then bind that key to an action-bar slot in WoW. Set up a few buttons first and test them in game before assigning the whole thumb grid.
How the mouse-to-ability setup works
There are two bindings to configure: Synapse translates a physical mouse button into a keyboard input, and WoW assigns that keyboard input to an action-bar button or another command. This two-step method is also described in a WoW community forum walkthrough; it is practical community advice, not an official Blizzard setup guide.
Use a keyboard key you can dedicate to the ability. If WoW does not recognize a side button as a distinct input, mapping it to a keyboard key in Synapse and binding that key in WoW is a community-described workaround. It may not resolve every issue across mouse models, operating systems, or software versions.
Configure the buttons in Synapse and WoW
- Open the Synapse version supported by your mouse. Select the mouse in Synapse. Razer’s support information for the Naga Left-Handed Edition describes Synapse as enabling advanced features such as macros and profile settings. That device-specific guidance should not be assumed to describe every Razer model.
- Assign a keyboard key to a side button. In Synapse, select the mouse button and choose the keyboard input you intend to use for the WoW ability, then save the assignment. Razer’s Synapse 4 assignment instructions use the Dashboard, device and button selection, assignment, and Save. The available controls and labels can vary with the mouse and Synapse version.
- Bind that key to an action in WoW. Open WoW’s Options and Keybindings, find the relevant action-bar button or command, and press the keyboard key you assigned in Synapse. Community instructions describe binding action-bar slots this way; menu wording may vary by game version.
- Repeat for a small number of buttons. Add assignments gradually rather than filling every position at once. Confirm each button is comfortable to reach and activates the intended key and ability in a safe setting.
- Check the active Synapse profile. If you use profiles, make sure the intended one is active for WoW. Razer documents profile switching and notes that some Synapse functions require the software to remain running; see its Synapse 4 instructions for the relevant profile controls.
Choose a layout you can reach reliably
Button count matters only if you can use the buttons comfortably. Start with a few thumb-grid positions that are easy to distinguish by touch, then add more if you can reach them without accidentally pressing a neighboring button.

As one device-specific example, Razer describes the Naga V2 Pro’s 12-button side plate as recommended for MMOs and its 2-button plate as recommended for general use. That distinction can help you choose between a dense grid and a smaller layout, but it does not establish that one configuration improves gameplay. Check your mouse’s support information for compatible Synapse versions and profile behavior.
Troubleshoot unexpected inputs
- A button sends a number or the wrong key: Check that the correct Synapse profile is active and that the button has the intended assignment. Community troubleshooting also identifies the active profile or key map as a possible cause.
- The button does not activate the expected ability: Inspect WoW’s Keybindings for the action-bar slot and confirm it is bound to the same keyboard key Synapse sends. Look for another binding that could conflict with or duplicate that input.
- WoW does not detect the mouse button distinctly: Assign a keyboard key to the button in Synapse, then bind that key in WoW. This community-described workaround is not guaranteed for every device or setup.
- Assignments or profiles stop behaving as expected: Confirm the intended profile is active and check whether your model requires Synapse to be running for the feature you are using. Razer’s software requirements are model-specific.
For this setup, use simple button-to-key mappings and WoW’s own keybindings. Do not rely on hardware macros to automate in-game actions.
