The key to a reliable channel is not the playlist syntax alone: every input must have compatible streams, codecs and time bases, and the outgoing encoder settings must suit your YouTube ingest and upload connection.
1. Prepare the music files
Before building the playlist, inspect the files you plan to loop. The concat demuxer is designed to join compatible inputs: each file needs the same streams, with matching codecs and time bases. Music videos gathered from different sources may vary in video and audio properties, which can make concatenation fail or produce timestamp problems.
- Use files with consistent stream layouts and encoding properties where possible.
- If the files differ, normalize them to a common profile before concatenating. That generally means re-encoding; the exact profile depends on your source files and desired YouTube output.
- Check that every track plays correctly and that its duration is accurate. The demuxer uses file durations to place later files on the timeline; inaccurate or missing duration information can cause artifacts.

2. Create the concat playlist file
Make a plain-text file containing one file directive for each item, in playback order. For example, save this as playlist.txt:

file 'music/track-03.mp4'Those paths are examples; replace them with paths to your own compatible media files. Relative paths are resolved from the working directory where you run FFmpeg. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer enables safe-path checking by default. This rejects paths it considers unsafe, including absolute paths and protocol-like paths. Do not disable this check casually: the safe option set to 0 accepts any filename, so use it only when you understand and trust every entry in the playlist. The demuxer’s optional auto-detection header is exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line, without extra spaces or a byte-order mark. When a duration needs correction
The demuxer offsets each file’s timestamps so the first starts at zero and subsequent files follow the preceding file, using the files’ durations. If duration metadata is wrong or unavailable, the transition timing may be wrong. FFmpeg supports a per-file duration directive to override a duration; use it when you have a reliable duration value for that item. Do not guess a duration to hide a broken or truncated source file.
3. Choose a concatenation method

These are not interchangeable shortcuts. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and distinguishes it from the demuxer approach: FFmpeg FAQ: concatenating media files.

4. Configure the outgoing YouTube Live stream
Choose an ingest protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio format as a matched output profile. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds.

These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not guarantees of stability or universal settings. Bitrate guidance varies with codec, resolution and frame rate. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain and run a speed test before committing to it.

Audio settings
For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in its advanced settings. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; AAC is required for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS. Pick the channel layout your material actually contains and your output supports.

The complete FFmpeg command depends on your source files, FFmpeg build, desired codec and encoding settings, and account settings; validate a command against those specifics rather than assuming one invocation fits every playlist. 5. Test the playlist and monitor the live event
- Confirm the playlist file is saved as plain text, its paths resolve from your run location, and every listed file is readable.
- Run a representative test using the same type of audio and video movement as the planned channel. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check that playback crosses file boundaries cleanly, audio remains present, and the video and audio stay synchronized.
- In Live Control Room, review stream health and any messages before and during the broadcast. If YouTube reports problems, adjust the output profile to match its guidance and your available upload capacity.

6. Clear rights for both the live stream and replay
A technically valid playlist does not grant permission to broadcast its music. Before streaming, verify that you have rights for live transmission and for any resulting replay, for the relevant territories and uses. The technical encoder documentation does not establish your rights or identify a suitable licensor. Copyright claims or restrictions can affect a broadcast or its archived replay; use the copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid, not as a substitute for permission.
Common problems and fixes
