Build a dedicated OBS scene collection for the school channel, pair it with a separate recording profile, choose a deliberate recording path and file format, then test the complete workflow before relying on it. OBS can launch with a chosen collection and profile and start recording, but that alone does not make the setup recover after a crash, power loss, or full or disconnected drive. Treat “24/7” as an operational goal that needs its own monitoring and recovery plan.
Understand scene collections and profiles first
An OBS scene collection stores scenes and sources, including global audio sources. A profile stores most output-related settings, such as video and recording configuration. They solve different problems: switching to the school channel’s collection does not, by itself, select the recording settings you intended.
| OBS item | What it stores | Use for the school channel |
|---|---|---|
| Scene collection | Scenes and sources | Keep the channel’s visual layouts and inputs together under a clearly named collection. |
| Profile | Most output-related settings | Keep the channel’s video and recording configuration separate from other OBS uses. |
Create the channel’s scene collection
- Open Scene Collections and create a collection. Give it a clear name, for example School Channel – Recording. Collections let you switch between sets of scenes and sources.
- Add only the scenes the channel needs. Possible layouts include a holding or title screen, a program scene, an announcements or schedule scene, and a closing scene. These are planning examples, not required OBS presets.
- Add and label sources. A scene may combine images, text, video, webcams or capture devices, and displays. Name school-specific assets and live inputs so another operator can identify them.
- Check visibility and stacking order. Confirm that overlays, text, and other sources appear in the intended order, then inspect every scene in the preview. A hidden or incorrectly layered source can make a scene look different from what the operator expects.
Create a separate recording profile
Select or create a profile for the school channel’s output configuration. Do not rely on the collection to store resolution, output, or recording choices: those are profile-related settings. Before an unattended launch, confirm that the selected profile is the one configured for recording and that the collection name matches exactly.
Set the recording destination and format
- Open Settings and the Output settings. Set the Recording Path to an intentional folder on the drive where the school expects recordings to be saved. The actual available controls can vary with the OBS version and output mode.
- Choose a recording format. OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop will not corrupt the whole file. If a downstream system needs MP4, use OBS’s remux function after recording to convert the container. Remuxing is not a guarantee that lost or damaged data can be recovered.
- Choose an encoder and quality the computer can sustain. The right choice depends on the machine and intended material. OBS notes that settings other than “Same as stream” can require additional resources. Test on the actual computer rather than assuming a setting will run continuously.
- Plan storage from the school’s own inputs. Required capacity depends on recording settings and how long files must be kept. There is no universal capacity figure: calculate from the selected recording quality, hours recorded, and retention policy, and decide how staff will respond as the destination fills or becomes unavailable.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and audio settings
In the Video settings, set the canvas and output resolutions for the source material and intended viewing use. Choose a frame rate the machine can handle reliably. OBS warns that higher rates such as 60 fps can be taxing compared with 30 fps; more frames are not automatically better for a school program or a fixed graphic loop. A specific resolution, frame rate, or encoder cannot be prescribed without knowing the source content and hardware.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the configured audio devices and watch the audio meters while sound is playing. Confirm that every scene that needs sound uses the intended source, and listen to the test recording itself. An active meter is useful, but it does not prove that the recorded file contains the right audio.
Test the whole recording path before depending on it
- Start a recording for a few minutes, following the same procedure staff will use in normal operation.
- Switch through each scene and verify the preview, source visibility, transitions, and audio.
- Stop the recording normally, locate the file in the configured destination, and play it back. Check that the picture, sound, and scene changes are present.
- Confirm that the destination has enough available space for the school’s planned retention period and that staff know what to do when space is low or the drive is unavailable.
- Test the intended launch sequence with the correct collection and profile selected. If the recording will run unattended, separately test the school’s operating-system startup, monitoring, alerting, and restart procedures.
The OBS Project’s Quick Start Guide strongly encourages a short test before a first recording or stream rather than immediately relying on the system.

Launch OBS with the collection, profile, and recording selected
OBS documents launch parameters that select a scene collection and profile and start recording. A launch can use this general pattern:
obs --collection "School Channel – Recording" --profile "School Recording" --startrecording

Use the executable and argument syntax appropriate to the installed OBS version and operating system, and verify the actual collection and profile names. These parameters request a particular OBS launch state; they are not a crash-recovery or restart service.
Windows scheduled launches
For scheduled or automated Windows launches, OBS’s guide says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Confirm the executable path and working directory on the school’s machine rather than copying a path from another installation. A successful scheduled launch still does not establish that OBS will restart after a failure or that the recording drive remains available.

What “24/7” requires beyond OBS launch parameters
A command that starts OBS recording covers only startup. It does not establish recovery after a crash, restart, power loss, or full or disconnected destination drive. Nor does a test lasting a few minutes prove that a particular computer can encode indefinitely.
- Decide who or what detects a stopped recording and alerts a responsible operator.
- Determine how the school’s operating system should start or restart OBS, and test that procedure under realistic conditions.
- Define how staff will check the recording path, available space, and resulting files, and what action to take if the drive is unavailable or full.
- Test the complete setup on the actual machine and with the actual retention policy before treating it as a dependable continuous workflow.
The OBS guidance described here covers scene and profile organization, recording settings, launch parameters, and testing. It does not provide a guarantee of unattended recovery or specify the school’s storage capacity or hardware suitability.
