FFmpeg’s reconnect options can retry a failing HTTP input; they do not, by themselves, guarantee that a dropped RTMP connection to YouTube will resume. Configure retries for the side of the pipeline that is failing, and treat continuous streaming as an operational goal—not a promise made by one switch.
Identify which connection needs to recover
A typical FFmpeg-to-YouTube pipeline has a source that FFmpeg reads and an output that FFmpeg publishes to YouTube. An HTTP input can use FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol reconnect options. A publishing interruption is an output-side problem and requires separate handling.
| Failure location | Relevant documented mechanism | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP source disconnect or EOF | HTTP protocol reconnect options documented by the FFmpeg Project | Recovery for non-HTTP inputs or an RTMP publishing output. |
| FFmpeg output write or publishing interruption | Separate output and FIFO muxer recovery controls in the FFmpeg formats documentation | Guaranteed recovery of a YouTube live session or resumption at the same point. |
| Destination or setup mismatch | Verify the YouTube ingestion configuration and address in the YouTube LiveStreams documentation | That retries can fix an invalid address, expired stream key, or incorrect stream setup. |
If the input is a camera, file, RTSP feed, or another non-HTTP source, HTTP reconnect flags are not a general-purpose reconnect solution for it. Likewise, these flags configure HTTP input behavior, not RTMP output recovery.
Configure reconnect options for an HTTP input
The following is an illustrative pattern for an HTTP live source, not a universal or tested command. Replace both placeholder URLs with the actual source and YouTube ingestion address. Keep the stream key secret: never put a real key in a published command, screenshot, or log.

ffmpeg -reconnect 1 -reconnect_streamed 1 -reconnect_at_eof 1
-reconnect_delay_max 10
-i 'https://example.invalid/live.m3u8'
-c copy -f flv 'rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REDACTED_STREAM_KEY'
HTTP input options must appear before the -i they configure. The example uses stream copy and FLV output, but source protocol, codecs, output container, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream setup all affect whether a particular command works.
- Confirm that the input is HTTP. Reconnect flags from the HTTP protocol reference apply to HTTP input. They do not make another input protocol reconnect automatically.
- Choose EOF behavior deliberately.
-reconnect_at_eof 1treats EOF as an error that triggers reconnection, a behavior the FFmpeg Project describes as useful for live or endless streams. It is not a way to loop a finite local file forever. - Enable retries for streamed inputs where appropriate.
-reconnect_streamed 1enables retries on errors for streamed or non-seekable HTTP inputs. - Set practical retry bounds.
-reconnect_delay_max 10sets a maximum reconnect delay in seconds in this example. Consider the source service and your tolerance for interruption; it is not a universal recommended value. - Add error policies only when justified. Network-error, HTTP-status, retry-count, and total-delay controls let you specify which failures to retry and how long to keep trying. Choose them for the source’s actual behavior rather than assuming every error is temporary.
What the HTTP reconnect options mean
The FFmpeg Project’s HTTP protocol documentation defines the options below. Check your installed build’s protocol help and error output before relying on a flag: FFmpeg notes in its command-line documentation that it is under continuous development and code may change.

reconnect: reconnect automatically after a disconnection before EOF. It does not make a finite file loop indefinitely.reconnect_at_eof: treat EOF as an error that causes reconnection; documented as useful for live or endless streams.reconnect_streamed: allow retries on errors for streamed or non-seekable inputs.reconnect_on_network_error: retry TCP or TLS errors during connection.reconnect_on_http_error: specify HTTP status codes to retry, as individual codes or groups such as4xxand5xx.reconnect_delay_max: set the maximum delay before giving up reconnecting.reconnect_max_retries: set a maximum retry count; the current reference leaves the default unset.reconnect_delay_total_max: set a maximum total reconnect delay.respect_retry_after: when enabled, honor the server’sRetry-Afterrequest instead of using exponential backoff.
Retries can be bounded, the source may remain unavailable, and authentication or configuration errors may not be recoverable by retrying. Broad status groups can therefore cause unhelpful retries on permanent errors. State your intended policy in the command or operating procedure, and avoid implying that retrying guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
Handle a dropped YouTube publishing connection separately
YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation describes ingestion addresses for sending video and the relevant RTMP, DASH, or HLS protocol context. If FFmpeg loses its RTMP publishing connection, HTTP input reconnect flags do not promise the output will reconnect or that YouTube will resume the same live session.

FFmpeg documents recovery-related controls for its FIFO muxer separately in the formats documentation. That is a distinct output-side mechanism to investigate for temporary write failures, not a guarantee of YouTube session recovery. Verify the ingestion address and stream setup as well; retries cannot repair an invalid destination or expired key.
Common failure cases and checks
- The command rejects an option. The installed FFmpeg build may not support it, or it may be in the wrong position. Check the local HTTP protocol help and put HTTP input options before the corresponding
-i. - The source disconnects and does not return. Confirm that it is an HTTP input and that the selected retry behavior matches the source. Check authentication and whether the error is temporary; finite retry limits or a total-delay cap can end retries.
- The input reaches EOF and stops.
reconnectalone covers disconnection before EOF, not looping a finite file.reconnect_at_eofasks FFmpeg to treat EOF as an error for an appropriate live or endless HTTP source; it is not a general file-loop setting. - YouTube stops receiving video even though input retries are enabled. Investigate the output connection and YouTube ingestion setup separately. HTTP input options do not establish output recovery.
- Retries continue for a permanent HTTP error. Narrow the configured status policy and bound retry count or total delay where suitable. A retry is not a fix for a wrong URL, invalid credentials, or incompatible setup.
- The stream returns after an interruption but content position differs. The cited FFmpeg references do not establish that reconnecting resumes media at the exact interrupted frame; do not rely on frame-exact continuity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer or FFmpeg process running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop from the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
