To run a YouTube playlist in OBS and switch layouts, create separate scenes, add a VLC Video source with your media files, then use scene hotkeys for manual changes or OBS WebSocket with an external client for automation. Scene switching changes what OBS sends; it does not schedule or guarantee the YouTube broadcast itself. For an unattended 24/7 channel, test the full setup and plan separately for YouTube’s archive limits and recovery.
What scene switching can—and cannot—do
An OBS scene is a layout of sources, such as video, images, text, and capture. Switching scenes changes the composition sent to the encoder. It does not start, stop, schedule, or guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast.
Keep the jobs distinct: use a playlist source to play media, scene controls to change what viewers see, and YouTube’s Live Control Room to manage the broadcast. If the goal is an unattended rotation, ordinary scene hotkeys are not enough; use an automation method and test its behavior.
Build scenes around the viewer experience
- Create a scene collection. In OBS, add separately named scenes for each layout or state you need—for example, Main Playlist, Intermission, and Information. Scenes can combine video, images, text, capture, and other sources.
- Name scenes and sources distinctly. OBS scenes and sources share a global namespace, so avoid reusing the same name for both. Clear names also make hotkeys and automation easier to maintain.
- Decide when each scene should appear. A holding screen, for example, may be useful while the playlist is not visible or an operator is preparing another layout. A scene change alone does not pause or restart the YouTube broadcast.
Add a looping playlist with the VLC Video source
For a playlist of multiple local files, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than an ordinary Media Source. The VLC source requires VLC to be installed. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install the matching VLC version. Match VLC’s bitness to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In the scene where the playlist should appear, add a VLC Video source.
- Load files in the intended order. Add the local media files to the source’s playlist in sequence. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if you need a deterministic order.
- Set repeat behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the last item.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. OBS provides options that can stop or restart playback when a source is hidden. Since a scene switch can hide the playlist source, choose the behavior deliberately and test what happens when it becomes visible again; media sources may take a short time to resume or appear.
- Verify every file path. The files must remain accessible on the computer running OBS. Test the playlist from beginning to end and switch away and back before relying on it unattended.
Choose how to switch scenes
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS hotkeys | An operator present to switch scenes | Native and direct, but hotkeys do not provide unattended time-based scheduling. |
| OBS WebSocket with an external client | Remote control or condition- and time-based automation | Flexible, but the exact setup depends on the client or integration. Secure it with authentication and test it. |
| Third-party stream segment automation | Managing separate broadcast segments, including when archive duration matters | May require YouTube API permissions and depends on plugin compatibility, maintenance, and failure handling; it is not an official YouTube guarantee. |
Manual switching with hotkeys
- Open OBS Settings and select Hotkeys.
- Find each named scene’s switch action and assign a distinct key or key combination.
- Apply the settings, then test every key while monitoring the program output. Avoid combinations that conflict with other software you use during the broadcast.
Prepare changes with Studio Mode
Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene in the preview area before sending it live. Make the change on the edit side, then use the configured transition to take it to program output. This is useful when an operator wants to check a layout before viewers see it; it is not a scheduler.
Automate with OBS WebSocket
OBS WebSocket is included in OBS Studio 28 and later. It exposes scene and source controls to compatible external clients or custom integrations, but OBS does not prescribe one universal scheduling macro. The exact steps depend on the tool you choose.

- Configure the desired scene changes in the client, then test the schedule or trigger while watching the program output.
- Test what happens if OBS or the client restarts, a trigger is missed, or the playlist source is hidden. Do not assume the automation will recover correctly until you have verified it.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Check live access early. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so complete that step ahead of the planned start.
- Get the stream URL and key. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, obtain the encoder connection details. Keep the stream key private.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open OBS stream settings and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key as directed by the current Live Control Room workflow.
- Start sending and verify reception. Start the stream from OBS, then confirm YouTube receives the incoming preview and shows the expected broadcast status before relying on the live output.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a first-pass setup based on intended use, computer resources, and network conditions. It is not a guarantee of reliable 24/7 operation. Test your actual scenes, files, encoder, and upload connection under realistic conditions; there is no universal hardware specification or upload bitrate established for every playlist and scene collection.
Plan for archives, restarts, and backups
YouTube archive duration
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That rule does not establish that one continuous 24/7 broadcast longer than 12 hours will have a complete archive. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter broadcast segments and verify YouTube’s current behavior rather than assuming the full continuous stream will be saved.

A third-party OBS community listing for Live Stream Segmenter describes automation intended to keep streams under 12 hours. At the listing checked on 2026-10-03, its stated version was 1.1.4, published 2026-01-13. That is a plugin’s stated purpose, not proof of reliability or an official YouTube guarantee. Before depending on it, check supported OBS versions, required permissions, maintenance, and how it handles failures.
Protect the setup
- Back up both profiles and scenes. OBS Profiles save stream, video, and output settings; they do not save scenes. Scene Collections handle scenes. Back up both when preparing a deployable setup.
- Keep media available. A playlist that points to local files depends on those files remaining accessible to the computer running OBS.
- Test visible and hidden states. Scene changes can affect whether a VLC source is visible, and its Visibility Behaviour settings can affect playback when it returns.
- Check copyright and YouTube rules. Having a working playlist does not establish that you have rights to broadcast the media or that the channel complies with YouTube’s rules. Use content you are permitted to stream and check the current platform requirements.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source is unavailable or does not play | VLC is missing, the bitness does not match OBS, or a file path is unavailable. | Install VLC matching OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS), confirm every media file is present, then reopen and test the playlist. |
| Playlist starts over or stops after switching scenes | The source’s Visibility Behaviour affects playback while hidden. | Review that setting, then test switching away and back to confirm whether playback continues, stops, or restarts as intended. |
| Playlist plays once and ends | Loop Playlist is not enabled. | Enable Loop Playlist and test the transition from the final file back to the first. |
| A hotkey does not switch to the expected scene | The key is unassigned, conflicts with another shortcut, or targets a differently named scene. | Review OBS Settings > Hotkeys, assign a distinct combination, and test it while monitoring program output. |
| WebSocket automation cannot control OBS | The client connection, OBS version, authentication, or client configuration is wrong. | Confirm OBS Studio 28 or later, check the client’s connection settings, and verify the authentication credentials without sharing them. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The stream URL or key is incorrect, or live streaming is not yet enabled. | Recheck the current Live Control Room connection details and incoming preview. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. |
| The 24/7 broadcast does not produce one complete archive | A continuous stream longer than 12 hours is not covered by YouTube’s stated automatic-archive rule. | Use shorter segments if archiving is required and verify current YouTube behavior; do not assume a third-party segmenter guarantees the result. |
