Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo restart FFmpeg automatically after it exits unsuccessfully, run it as a foreground systemd service and set Restart=on-failure plus a delay with RestartSec=. This recovers from process failures; it does not fix a bad stream key, unstable connection, or a stream that has stalled while FFmpeg remains running.
Create a systemd unit for FFmpeg
This example loops a video file and sends it to YouTube over RTMP. Replace the input, encoding options, account, and stream key handling with values appropriate to your setup.
- Create
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.servicewith a text editor, for examplesudo nano /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Add the following unit:
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
# Example guard against a rapid restart loop. Tune for the deployment.
StartLimitIntervalSec=300
StartLimitBurst=5
[Service]
Type=simple
User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -hide_banner -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/stream/input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REPLACE_WITH_STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Adapt the example to your input
-stream_loop -1 is for a file intended to loop. For a camera, capture card, or other live source, use the appropriate FFmpeg input arguments instead. The codec and other encoding options shown are illustrative, not universal YouTube settings; choose settings your system and connection can sustain.
Keep FFmpeg as the foreground process in ExecStart. Do not launch it in the background from a shell, or systemd may not observe the FFmpeg process exit as intended. Run the service as an unprivileged account such as stream, granting it only the access needed for its input and working directories.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Protect the stream key
A YouTube stream key is a credential. Do not commit it to a public repository or expose it in shared logs. The inline key in the sample makes the command easy to read, but for a real deployment use a restricted environment file or another secret-handling method appropriate to your system. Set permissions so other users cannot read the secret.
Enable the service and check its status
- After saving the unit, tell systemd to reload unit files and enable and start the service:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check whether it is running with
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Follow its logs with
journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f. UseCtrl+Cto stop following the log; that does not stop the service. - After editing the unit later, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadand restart it withsudo systemctl restart ffmpeg-youtube.service.
What systemd restarts—and what it cannot detect
Restart=on-failure tells systemd to restart the service when its process exits unsuccessfully, is terminated abnormally, or encounters applicable timeout or watchdog conditions. RestartSec=10s makes systemd wait ten seconds before attempting a restart. The sample’s delay and start-rate settings are example operator choices, not universal recommendations.

Repeated failures can hit systemd’s start-rate limit. The sample allows five starts within a 300-second interval before limiting further starts. Tune those values for your deployment; a restart loop does not resolve the underlying error.
Systemd supervises the FFmpeg process, not the usefulness of the stream. If FFmpeg stays alive while sending no usable media, a process-exit restart rule may not trigger. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event; encoder settings a connection cannot sustain or an ingest-side problem need diagnosis, not just a restart.

Choose the right recovery layer
Use systemd for a process that exits
Systemd can bring the whole FFmpeg process back after a qualifying failure. Inspect the error before raising restart limits or clearing a failed state, so the service does not simply repeat the same failure.
Consider FFmpeg output recovery for network errors
FFmpeg documents output-side recovery mechanisms, including recovery options for network outputs through the FIFO muxer. These work inside the output path and are separate from systemd restarting a process. Their applicability depends on the output and muxer configuration; check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version before adding options.

Troubleshoot a failed or unhealthy stream
- The service will not start: Run
systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand inspectjournalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service. Check the executable path, input path, account permissions, network availability, and stream-key validity against the reported error. - It keeps restarting: Read the recent logs for the cause and systemd’s restart decisions. Correct the failure before trying again; a loop may reach the start-rate limit.
- It is marked failed or starts are rate limited: First inspect logs and fix the underlying issue. Then clear the recorded failed state and counters with
sudo systemctl reset-failed ffmpeg-youtube.service, followed bysudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service. Resetting counters does not fix the cause. - systemd says it is running, but YouTube reports a stream problem: Check FFmpeg output, ingest connectivity, encoder settings, and YouTube’s stream-health status. Test the configuration before relying on it for an event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded video without maintaining a Linux host and systemd service, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
