To send an FFmpeg stream from an Indian VPS to YouTube securely, use the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in that stream’s current YouTube Live Control Room settings, confirm your installed FFmpeg supports RTMPS, and connect over port 443. Use -f flv for the output and choose video and audio settings from YouTube’s current guidance for your resolution and frame rate. An India location alone does not guarantee the VPS has suitable routing or outbound access.
What you need before configuring RTMPS
- An Indian VPS running an operating system for which you can install or build FFmpeg.
- A video file or other FFmpeg input, plus enough sustained VPS upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate.
- A YouTube channel with a stream configured in Live Control Room and access to its current RTMPS URL and stream key.
- Outbound TCP access to port 443 from the VPS. The host’s region does not establish that this connection is permitted or reliable.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends it and documents port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. Use the endpoint provided for the stream rather than relying on a remembered hostname or an old example URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance and its ingestion protocol documentation.
Configure the YouTube endpoint and check FFmpeg
- Install FFmpeg. Use a trusted package for your VPS operating system or a suitable build. Available protocols and encoders vary by build.
- Check RTMPS support. Run
ffmpeg -protocolson the VPS and confirmrtmpsappears in the output. FFmpeg documents this command as the way to list protocols supported by the installed tools: FFmpeg protocol documentation. - Copy the current YouTube values. Open the stream settings in YouTube Live Control Room, reveal and copy its RTMPS URL, and copy the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not expose a real key in public scripts, support tickets, screenshots, or shell history.
- Use the full endpoint. FFmpeg documents RTMP URL syntax as
protocol://server[:port]/app/playpath. Use the exact server and path YouTube supplies, retain thertmpsscheme, and connect on port 443.
Choose video, audio and keyframe settings
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. It also provides bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate. Consult the current table for your intended output rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated example: YouTube live encoder settings.
- Video codec: H.264 with AAC audio is a conventional choice if your FFmpeg build includes the required encoders. The available encoder list depends on the build.
- Resolution and bitrate: Set them together using YouTube’s current recommendation for the chosen resolution and frame rate. The recommendation table is dynamic, so select the applicable row when configuring the stream.
- Keyframes: Aim for one keyframe every two seconds. For example, that corresponds to a GOP of 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps.
- Rate control: Use constant-bitrate-style controls supported by the encoder you selected. Exact FFmpeg options are encoder-specific; check the documentation for the encoder available in your build.
- Audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as recommended stereo settings. Match the command to the actual audio tracks in your input.
Send a file to YouTube with FFmpeg
This template reads a file in real time, encodes video and audio, and sends an FLV output to the RTMPS endpoint. Replace every placeholder, including the endpoint components, before running it. The bitrate placeholders must come from YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate; the example is a template, not a tested universal command.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate VIDEO_MAXRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-r FRAME_RATE -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_FRAMES
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE
-f flv 'rtmps://HOST:443/APP/STREAM_KEY'
- Replace
input.mp4with the input file path. - Replace the video bitrate, maximum rate, buffer size, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio bitrate with values appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current settings guidance.
- Replace
HOST,APP, andSTREAM_KEYwith the exact RTMPS server and path components supplied for the stream. Do not publish the completed command with a real key. - Check that the build supports the encoders named in the command. For example, a build may not include
libx264; if an encoder is unavailable, use an available supported encoder and its corresponding options. - Run FFmpeg and confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube receives the stream. Inspect stream health before announcing or depending on the broadcast.
For an already encoded live input, stream copy may be possible, but only if its codecs and parameters meet YouTube’s current ingestion guidance. Do not assume an arbitrary input can be passed through unchanged.
Check the VPS network path and stream health
Indian VPS location is not a performance guarantee. Confirm outbound TCP 443 access with the provider and from the actual server, and review local firewall rules and provider egress policies. Also check that sustained upload capacity can carry the selected bitrate. No India-specific latency, throughput, or host ranking is established here.

When the stream reaches YouTube but health is poor, compare FFmpeg’s output with YouTube’s stream-health information. Check that the selected bitrate matches the current recommendation for the actual resolution and frame rate, that the encoder is using constant-bitrate-style controls, that keyframes are approximately two seconds apart, and that the VPS is not exceeding its sustained upstream capacity.
Troubleshoot common RTMPS failures
Unknown protocol or unsupported output
Run ffmpeg -protocols and look for rtmps. If it is missing, install or build an FFmpeg version that includes RTMPS support, then check the protocol list again. FFmpeg builds can disable or selectively enable protocols.

SSL certificate error
Verify that the copied endpoint uses rtmps and the correct server. If the URL appears correct but the SSL error persists, YouTube advises explicitly specifying port 443. Do not switch to cleartext RTMP as a workaround for an SSL problem.
Connection timeout
Copy the current URL again, confirm RTMPS support, and check that port 443 is reachable from the VPS. Inspect both the VPS firewall and the provider’s outbound network policy. A host being in India does not prove it permits the required connection.

Stream arrives but has poor quality or health
Check the current YouTube bitrate recommendation for the stream’s resolution and frame rate, verify the two-second keyframe target and rate-control settings, and compare FFmpeg output with YouTube’s health information. If the selected rate exceeds the VPS’s sustained upstream capacity, reduce the output settings to a suitable recommendation and verify again.
