Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. The console uses Xbox Wireless for supported wireless accessories, not a general Bluetooth-speaker connection. Instead, route Xbox audio through your TV, monitor, or an HDMI audio extractor.
For most users, the best option is to pair the speaker with a TV that supports Bluetooth audio. If you use a monitor, its 3.5-mm headphone output may be simpler and less laggy. If neither display provides a suitable output, use an HDMI audio extractor and Bluetooth transmitter.
Choose the right connection
| Your setup | Best method | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| TV supports Bluetooth audio | Pair the speaker with the TV | Possible audio delay; chat usually will not work |
| Monitor has a 3.5-mm headphone output | Connect the speaker by AUX | Uses a cable, but usually adds less delay |
| Display has no useful audio output | HDMI extractor plus Bluetooth transmitter | More hardware, cables, and compatibility checks |
| You need party chat and low latency | Xbox-compatible headset | Headphones instead of room-filling speaker audio |
| You can use wired audio | Speaker or headphones through the controller | Short wired connection |
Why direct Bluetooth pairing does not work
Xbox Series S does not provide the ordinary Bluetooth-speaker pairing workflow found on phones, tablets, PCs, and many smart TVs. Xbox Wireless is Microsoft’s proprietary wireless connection for supported console accessories; it is not the same as generic Bluetooth. Microsoft’s Xbox accessories documentation describes the distinction.
Even the official Xbox Wireless Headset uses Xbox Wireless for the console. Its Bluetooth function is intended for compatible PCs and mobile devices, not as evidence that a generic Bluetooth speaker can pair directly with Series S.

The controller’s 3.5-mm socket is an analog audio output, not a Bluetooth transmitter. A generic USB Bluetooth dongle is also not a dependable plug-and-play solution: Xbox does not treat the Series S like a Windows PC with arbitrary USB Bluetooth audio support.
Do not confuse Xbox Series S with Xbox One S. They are different consoles, and the Series S has no optical audio output. Microsoft’s Xbox spatial-audio documentation identifies optical audio as unavailable on Xbox Series X|S.
Method 1: Pair the speaker with your TV
What you need
- Xbox Series S connected to the TV by HDMI.
- A TV that supports Bluetooth audio output, not merely Bluetooth for keyboards or controllers.
- A Bluetooth speaker that can receive standard audio.
Steps
- Connect the Series S to the TV’s HDMI input.
- Turn on the TV, Xbox, and speaker.
- Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open the TV’s Settings menu and look under Sound, Audio Output, or a similarly named section.
- Choose Bluetooth Speaker, Bluetooth Audio Device, or Pair New Device.
- Select the speaker and wait for the TV to connect.
- Launch a game and adjust volume using the TV, speaker, or both.
Menu names vary by manufacturer, model, firmware, and region. Some TVs support Bluetooth audio for internal apps but do not pass HDMI-source audio to Bluetooth devices. If your TV pairs successfully but Xbox sound remains unavailable, use the monitor or HDMI-extractor method instead.
Limitations
- Bluetooth processing can introduce game-audio delay. The amount depends on the TV, transmitter, speaker, and codec.
- The TV may mute its built-in speakers when Bluetooth output is selected.
- The Xbox does not normally control the speaker’s Bluetooth pairing.
- A Bluetooth speaker generally does not provide a usable microphone path for Xbox party chat.
Method 2: Use a monitor’s 3.5-mm output
This is often the easiest solution for a gaming monitor and does not use Bluetooth. It can also reduce latency compared with sending audio through a TV’s Bluetooth system.

- Connect the Series S to the monitor by HDMI.
- Connect the speaker’s AUX or 3.5-mm input to the monitor’s headphone or line-out jack.
- Set the speaker to AUX mode.
- If the monitor offers an audio-output choice, select its headphone output.
- Adjust volume using the monitor, speaker, or Xbox controls supported by your equipment.
The speaker must be powered. A passive speaker cannot be driven directly by a monitor headphone jack; it needs an amplifier. Some monitor headphone outputs are also quieter than expected, and some produce sound only when an active HDMI signal is present.
A USB cable may power a speaker without carrying Xbox audio. Do not assume that connecting USB creates an audio connection.
Method 3: HDMI audio extractor plus Bluetooth transmitter
Use this setup when the TV has no suitable Bluetooth audio function, the monitor has no 3.5-mm output, or you want to extract audio directly from the HDMI chain.
Required hardware
- An HDMI audio extractor with HDMI input and HDMI output.
- A second HDMI cable.
- A Bluetooth transmitter with an optical or AUX input.
- A Bluetooth speaker.
- USB power supplies for the extractor and transmitter if required.

Setup
- Turn off the Xbox, display, extractor, transmitter, and speaker.
- Connect the Xbox HDMI output to the extractor’s HDMI input.
- Connect the extractor’s HDMI output to the TV or monitor.
- Connect the extractor’s optical or AUX output to the transmitter’s matching input.
- Power both devices.
- Set the transmitter to TX, Transmitter, or the equivalent mode.
- Put the speaker into pairing mode and pair it with the transmitter.
- Turn on the display and Xbox.
- Set Xbox audio to stereo PCM or Stereo uncompressed, then test a game.
Check the extractor’s supported resolution and refresh rate before buying. An inexpensive model that passes 1080p at 60 Hz may interfere with a Series S setup using 1440p or 120 Hz. Also check HDCP pass-through, USB power requirements, and whether the audio output is optical, AUX, or both.

HDMI ARC/eARC is not the same as a normal HDMI input/output extractor. A transmitter designed for optical or AUX cannot accept ARC/eARC directly unless the manufacturer explicitly says it can. Avantree’s transmitter guidance describes this distinction. Its Oasis Plus page also marks that model as discontinued/not available, so do not treat it as a current default purchase without confirming a replacement.
Set Xbox audio to a compatible format
The likely route is:
Profile & system → Settings → General → Volume & audio output
Labels can change with console updates. For a basic Bluetooth-speaker chain, start with:
- HDMI audio: Stereo uncompressed.
- PCM stereo when that wording is available on the extractor or display.
- Avoid Dolby, DTS, or other bitstream formats unless every device in the chain supports them.
Stereo PCM is the safest baseline because a normal Bluetooth speaker is generally a stereo endpoint. Forcing multichannel audio through a basic extractor or transmitter can cause silence or incorrect output.

Method 4: Use the controller’s 3.5-mm output
If the speaker has an AUX input and can sit near you, connect it to the controller with a 3.5-mm cable. This is inexpensive and usually avoids Bluetooth latency. It does not make the speaker wireless, and a passive speaker still requires its own amplifier.
A small Bluetooth adapter connected to the controller is possible only when the specific adapter supports TX or transmitter mode and works with the controller’s analog output. Do not assume every 3.5-mm Bluetooth adapter will work: some are receiver-only.
- TX/transmitter: sends controller audio to a Bluetooth speaker.
- RX/receiver: receives Bluetooth audio and sends it to a wired output.
- Transceiver: supports both, but only in the modes and connections specified by its manufacturer.
Controller transmitters can add weight, obstruct the controller, drain batteries, introduce delay or interference, and usually do not provide dependable party-chat support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about party chat?
Game audio and two-way chat are separate problems. A TV or external transmitter can send game audio to a Bluetooth speaker, but it does not automatically create a microphone connection back to Xbox. A speaker with a built-in microphone is not automatically an Xbox-compatible chat accessory; phone-call functionality does not prove Xbox support.

For dependable party chat, use an Xbox-compatible headset or a supported wired headset connected to the controller. The official Xbox Wireless Headset connects directly to Xbox Series X|S using Xbox Wireless and separately supports Bluetooth for PCs and mobile devices. Microsoft lists features including a microphone, Xbox controls, Bluetooth 5.3, SBC, 40-mm speakers, up to 20 hours of battery life, and spatial-audio support on its product page.
Best option by priority
- Fewest purchases: Pair the speaker with a Bluetooth-capable TV.
- Monitor setup: Use the monitor’s 3.5-mm output and the speaker’s AUX input.
- Room-filling Bluetooth sound: Use an HDMI extractor and transmitter, checking video pass-through carefully.
- Lowest delay: Prefer wired AUX, or use a complete low-latency system where both transmitter and speaker support the same codec.
- Voice chat: Use an Xbox-compatible wireless headset or a wired headset.
- Lowest cost: Use wired headphones or a powered speaker through the controller or monitor.
Bluetooth 5.x alone does not guarantee low gaming latency. A transmitter advertising aptX Low Latency helps only if the receiving speaker supports that same codec. Many speakers use SBC or other codecs, so check both product specifications rather than relying on the Bluetooth version number.
Troubleshooting
No sound after pairing
- Confirm the speaker is connected to the TV or transmitter, not still connected to a phone.
- Check that the speaker is in the correct mode: Bluetooth, AUX, or optical.
- Confirm the transmitter is in TX mode.
- Make sure the extractor and transmitter are powered.
- Set Xbox HDMI audio to Stereo uncompressed or PCM stereo.
- Disconnect other Bluetooth devices that may have captured the speaker.
- Power-cycle the Xbox, display, extractor, transmitter, and speaker.
- Remove the speaker from the saved-device list and pair it again.
Video works but audio does not
Check for an unsupported audio format, a 5.1 or bitstream setting, an EDID or HDMI handshake problem, an extractor that cannot pass your chosen resolution or refresh rate, or a transmitter connected to an output that is not carrying audio.
Audio is delayed
Delay may be introduced by the TV, transmitter, speaker codec, or speaker processing. Reduce it by using AUX where possible, enabling a low-latency mode on both compatible devices, or bypassing TV Bluetooth with an extractor. Codec support must match at both ends.

Move the speaker closer, reduce walls and 2.4-GHz interference, charge the speaker, disconnect other paired devices, disable unnecessary dual-device pairing, and use the supplied or correctly rated USB power source for the transmitter and extractor.
Surround sound fails
Return the Xbox to Stereo uncompressed or PCM stereo. A standard Bluetooth speaker is normally stereo, and a basic extractor/transmitter may not decode Dolby, DTS, or other multichannel bitstreams.
