You usually cannot pair a generic Bluetooth speaker directly with an Xbox console. The easiest solution is to connect the speaker to your TV, which receives game audio from the Xbox over HDMI. If your TV or monitor lacks Bluetooth, use a Bluetooth transmitter or an HDMI audio extractor.
Can you connect a Bluetooth speaker directly to Xbox?
Generally, no. Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles do not normally provide a standard Bluetooth-audio menu for pairing ordinary Bluetooth speakers, AirPods, or similar devices. Xbox Wireless is a separate proprietary connection used by compatible Xbox accessories; it should not be confused with Bluetooth support on PCs and mobile devices. Do not expect a menu such as Settings → Devices → Bluetooth → Add device on an Xbox for generic Bluetooth speakers. The console’s audio normally reaches an external speaker through the TV, an audio adapter, or a wired controller connection.

The steps below work best for Xbox Series X|S. Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and the original Xbox One have different audio-port configurations, so inspect your exact console before buying an optical, 3.5-mm, or HDMI-based adapter. Older Xbox One models may include optical audio; Series X|S relies primarily on HDMI audio.

Method 1: Pair the speaker with your TV
This is usually the simplest setup because the Xbox is already connected to the TV by HDMI.
What you need
- An Xbox connected directly to the TV with HDMI
- A TV that supports Bluetooth audio output
- A Bluetooth speaker
Steps
- Turn on the Xbox and select the HDMI input it uses on the TV.
- Turn on the Bluetooth speaker and put it into pairing mode. The required button varies by manufacturer.
- Open the TV’s sound or audio settings.
- Choose the TV’s Bluetooth or wireless-speaker pairing option.
- Select the speaker from the device list.
- Set the TV’s audio output to the paired speaker rather than the TV’s internal speakers.
- Start a game and adjust the volume on the speaker or TV.
TV manufacturers use different labels. Look for Sound Output, Audio Output, Bluetooth Speaker List, Wireless Speaker, External Speaker, or Bluetooth Device. The general pairing flow is also described by Soundcore’s Xbox speaker guide.
Set Xbox audio to a compatible format
On the Xbox, open Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Volume & audio output. Microsoft documents this location for HDMI audio settings in its TV and audio setup guidance.

This is a compatibility-first choice for a two-channel speaker. Bitstream and surround formats can produce silence in some TV and transmitter chains unless every device supports the selected format.
You can also try Settings → General → Volume & audio output → Audio setup. The Audio setup wizard can test HDMI audio and connected speakers, although dashboard labels may vary slightly after console updates. Microsoft describes the wizard in its March 2022 Xbox update.
Method 2: Use a Bluetooth transmitter with the TV
If the TV has no Bluetooth but does have a usable audio output, connect a Bluetooth transmitter to the TV. The transmitter sends audio wirelessly to the speaker.

Suitable TV outputs may include:
- 3.5-mm headphone output
- Optical or TOSLINK output
- RCA audio output, using the correct cable or converter
Steps
- Connect the transmitter to the TV’s audio output.
- Power on the transmitter.
- Put the transmitter into pairing mode.
- Put the Bluetooth speaker into pairing mode.
- Wait for the transmitter and speaker to connect.
- Set the TV to external speakers or disable its internal speakers if necessary.
- Test a game and confirm that the speaker is producing Xbox audio.
Check the product’s direction before buying. A Bluetooth transmitter sends wired audio to Bluetooth headphones or speakers. A Bluetooth receiver accepts Bluetooth audio and sends it to wired speakers, so a receiver is usually the wrong adapter for this setup. Input type, power, codec support, and audio format compatibility also matter.
Method 3: Use an HDMI audio extractor
An HDMI audio extractor is useful when a TV or gaming monitor has no Bluetooth and no convenient audio output. It splits the HDMI signal so video continues to the display while audio is available for a Bluetooth transmitter.
The typical signal path is:
Xbox HDMI out → HDMI extractor HDMI in → extractor HDMI out → TV or monitor
Extractor audio out → Bluetooth transmitter → Bluetooth speakerSome monitors have a 3.5-mm audio output even though they do not have speakers or Bluetooth. In that case, you may be able to use:
Xbox → monitor by HDMI → monitor 3.5-mm output → Bluetooth transmitter → speakerBefore buying an extractor, match it to the Xbox video features you use. Inexpensive models may limit or disrupt 4K, HDR, 120 Hz, variable refresh rate, HDCP, or HDMI handshakes. Microsoft recommends connecting Xbox directly to a compatible display where possible and using suitable ARC/eARC or external-audio equipment for more advanced setups; see its HDMI and home-theater guidance.
Can you connect the speaker through the Xbox controller?
Wired speaker connection
If the speaker has a 3.5-mm AUX input, you may be able to connect it to the controller’s 3.5-mm headset jack with a suitable cable. This is wired rather than Bluetooth, but it avoids TV pairing and adapter compatibility problems.

The speaker may need to stay near the player, and some portable speakers do not behave correctly with a headset-style output. Volume, microphone, and chat behavior can vary. Microsoft documents compatible controller audio connections through its Xbox Stereo Headset information.

Controller-mounted Bluetooth transmitter
A small Bluetooth transmitter can sometimes connect to the controller’s 3.5-mm headset jack and then pair with the speaker. This requires a controller with that jack, and the controller must remain powered.
It is a workaround rather than the preferred method. It can add latency, disconnect when the controller sleeps, and provide unpredictable voice-chat behavior. The transmitter must support the correct audio direction, and a speaker is generally less suitable than a headset for this arrangement. Xbox One versus Xbox Series X|S

Because Xbox One revisions are not identical, do not assume that an optical cable or 3.5-mm connection is available on every model.

Troubleshooting
The speaker pairs but produces no sound
- Confirm that the TV is outputting audio to Bluetooth rather than its internal speakers.
- Check that the Xbox is connected to the TV’s active HDMI input.
- Disconnect the speaker from a phone or another device that may have reclaimed the connection.
- Verify that the adapter is in transmitter mode, not receiver mode.
- Set Xbox HDMI audio to a basic stereo format and test again.
- If using optical, check whether the TV is set to PCM or passthrough in a way the transmitter supports.
- Raise the speaker volume and check that it is not muted.
There is noticeable audio delay
Bluetooth can introduce a delay between an on-screen action and the sound. TV processing, the transmitter, the speaker’s codec, and multiple devices in the signal path can all contribute. The effect is particularly noticeable with gunshots, rhythm games, dialogue, and menu sounds. Windows Central discusses Bluetooth latency on Xbox.
- Enable the TV’s Game Mode or audio-latency reduction setting.
- Use a transmitter and speaker that support a lower-latency mode or codec.
- Connect the transmitter directly to the TV’s audio output where possible.
- Remove unnecessary devices from the signal path.
- Use wired audio or an Xbox-compatible wireless headset when timing is critical.
No Bluetooth setup can be promised to have zero lag without testing the exact TV, transmitter, speaker, codec, and settings together.
The TV connects, but Xbox audio stays on the TV
- Confirm that the Xbox is connected directly to the TV.
- Re-select Bluetooth or external speakers in the TV’s audio-output menu.
- Check the speaker after selecting the Xbox HDMI input; some TVs revert to internal speakers when inputs change or the TV restarts.
- Use stereo audio on the Xbox and test again.
The speaker works with TV apps but not Xbox games
Test a game, a dashboard sound, a TV app, and another HDMI input. If only certain sources fail, adjust the TV’s digital-audio output or the Xbox HDMI audio format. The problem may be an unsupported passthrough or surround format rather than Bluetooth pairing itself.

The speaker disconnects
Portable speakers may sleep during quiet passages, reconnect automatically to a phone, or lose their link when the transmitter or controller powers down. Disable competing device connections where possible, keep the speaker and transmitter within their recommended range, and prevent the controller from sleeping if you are using the controller method.
Better alternatives for gaming
A Bluetooth speaker is convenient for shared room audio, but it is not always the best gaming solution.
- Xbox Wireless Headset: Designed to connect to Xbox consoles through Xbox Wireless, with Bluetooth used for compatible PCs and mobile devices. Microsoft lists support for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PCs, and Bluetooth-compatible mobile devices. It is better suited to low-latency play, game/chat balance, and microphone use than a generic speaker. See the official product page.
- Wired headset: A headset connected to the controller avoids Bluetooth latency and normally provides a more dependable chat setup.
- Wired speaker: A speaker connected to the TV, monitor, extractor, or controller by cable avoids wireless pairing issues.
- HDMI soundbar or receiver: A suitable HDMI, ARC, or eARC setup can offer better synchronization and home-theater sound, but it is a different solution from using a Bluetooth speaker.
A generic USB Bluetooth dongle is not a plug-and-play Xbox audio solution. “Works on PC” does not mean the dongle is supported by Xbox; use only hardware explicitly designed for Xbox compatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect AirPods to Xbox?
Not through the Xbox’s normal console audio settings. AirPods generally need an intermediary such as a Bluetooth-capable TV or transmitter, and their microphone and latency behavior may not suit Xbox gaming.
Can I connect two Bluetooth speakers to Xbox?
Do not assume this will work. Two-speaker playback depends on the TV or transmitter and the speakers’ own multi-speaker system; Xbox does not generally provide synchronized multi-speaker Bluetooth output.
Does Bluetooth work for Xbox game chat?
A Bluetooth speaker is not a dependable two-way chat solution. Voice-chat behavior varies with the transmitter, controller, speaker, and Xbox settings, so use an Xbox-compatible headset for reliable chat.
Does Xbox One have optical audio?
Some Xbox One models include optical audio, but availability varies by revision. Check the ports on your exact console before buying an optical adapter.
