Most modern Android phones and iPhones can use a compatible controller over Bluetooth or USB. Pairing the hardware is only half the job: the game, remote-play app, or cloud service must also accept controller input.
For Bluetooth, charge the controller, put it in pairing mode, open the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the controller, then test it in a game that explicitly supports gamepads. Android’s general path is Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device; on iPhone, use Settings → Bluetooth. Labels can vary by Android manufacturer and version.
Check compatibility before you pair
- Phone and operating system: Confirm the Android or iOS version required by the controller. Sony lists DualSense support for Android 12 or later and iOS 14.5 or later; DUALSHOCK 4 support is listed for Android 10 or later and iOS 13 or later. Apple’s current controller workflow page covers iOS 16 or later, while individual controllers can have different minimums.
- Controller connection: Verify that the Xbox revision has Bluetooth, that a third-party pad supports the correct Android or iPhone mode, or that a wired controller matches the phone’s USB-C or Lightning port.
- Game or service: Native games, cloud-gaming services, and remote-play apps decide independently whether they accept controller input. Apple’s Game Controller framework does not make every app controller-compatible: developers must implement support (Apple Game Controller documentation).
- Physical fit: For USB controllers and plug-in mobile pads, check connector type, phone dimensions, case clearance, and whether the adapter carries data rather than power only.
Prepare the controller and phone
- Charge the controller or install fresh batteries.
- Disconnect its USB cable before attempting Bluetooth pairing.
- Turn off, unplug, or move away from the console, computer, tablet, or TV that normally captures the controller.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone and keep the controller nearby.
- Install phone or controller firmware updates if the manufacturer recommends them.
- If the phone has a failed saved entry for the controller, remove it before starting again.
Connect any Bluetooth controller to Android
- Turn the controller off, then hold its Pair, Bluetooth, or manufacturer-specified button combination until its status light flashes.
- On the Android phone, open Settings.
- Choose Connected devices (or Bluetooth on some phones).
- Tap Pair new device if that option appears.
- Select the controller’s name and accept a pairing request if Android displays one.
- Launch a controller-compatible game and test the sticks, buttons, and triggers.
Google documents Bluetooth and wired game-controller support, but manufacturers can change menu names and layouts (Google Android help).
Connect any Bluetooth controller to iPhone
- Turn the controller off or disconnect it from its console.
- Activate the controller’s Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth and switch Bluetooth on.
- Tap the controller under Other Devices.
- Wait for it to move to My Devices and show as connected.
- Open a game or service with controller support and test it.
Apple supports compatible Xbox, PlayStation, and other Bluetooth controllers. Audio jacks, lights, and other features can vary by controller and app (Apple controller support).

Pair specific controllers
Xbox Wireless Controller
- Press the Xbox button to turn on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes.
- Open Bluetooth settings on Android or iPhone and select the Xbox controller.
- Test it in a supported game.
Older Xbox One revisions may not include Bluetooth, while newer Xbox Wireless Controller revisions do. Check the exact hardware model before buying. If the controller keeps reconnecting to an Xbox, turn the console off temporarily and re-enter pairing mode rather than simply pressing the Xbox button.

Third-party Bluetooth pads
There is no universal pairing shortcut. Hold the manufacturer’s Pair, Bluetooth, or Home combination, then select the flashing device in the phone menu. If the controller offers Android, iOS/MFi, XInput, or DInput modes, use the mode recommended for your phone and game. A controller can show as connected yet send unusable input when the wrong mode is selected.
Rank #4

Connect a controller by USB
Android and USB-C iPhone
- Connect a compatible USB-C controller or a data-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the phone and allow USB access if prompted.
- Remove the case temporarily if the plug cannot seat fully.
- Open a controller-compatible game and test input.
If nothing happens, try a data cable instead of a charge-only cable and confirm that the phone supports USB host/OTG and that the controller is in its correct wired mode. Android USB behavior depends on the phone, operating system, controller, cable, and game.
Lightning iPhone
A compatible Lightning controller can connect directly. A USB controller may need an Apple-compatible adapter that supports data, not charging alone. Adapter and controller compatibility varies, and some features may remain unavailable; check the manufacturer’s list for the exact iPhone model.
Best Value
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Confirm that the game supports controllers
- Open the game’s Settings, Controls, or Input menu and look for gamepad options or button remapping.
- Check the game’s official support documentation and its App Store or Google Play listing.
- Test from the main menu, not only after entering gameplay.
- For remote play or cloud gaming, check that service’s supported-controller list.
- Connect the controller before launching the game; some apps need to be restarted to detect it.
A native mobile game, a remote-play app streaming your own console or PC, and a cloud-gaming service can have different controller rules even on the same phone.
Troubleshoot common failures
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Confirm that the indicator is flashing; a steady light often means it is already connected elsewhere.
- Turn off nearby consoles, PCs, TVs, and tablets.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then restart both phone and controller.
- Charge the controller and update its firmware through the manufacturer’s official app or console.
- Reset the controller according to its manual if it still remains invisible.
It appears but will not connect
- Use Forget This Device on iPhone or remove the saved device on Android, then pair again.
- Disconnect any USB cable during Bluetooth setup.
- Choose the correct controller entry if duplicate names appear.
- Make sure another device has not already claimed the controller.
It connects but the game ignores it
- Verify that the game or service supports controllers and that support is enabled in its settings.
- Force-close and reopen the game with the controller already connected.
- Try another known controller-compatible game.
- Check the developer’s support page for model, firmware, region, or app-version restrictions.
Buttons or prompts are wrong
Xbox pads use A, B, X, and Y; PlayStation pads use Cross, Circle, Square, and Triangle. Games may display Xbox-style prompts with a PlayStation-shaped controller, and button remapping is not always available. Generic pads can also map labels according to their selected software mode rather than their printed letters.
Rumble, motion, audio, or special features fail
A successful connection does not guarantee rumble, motion controls, touchpad gestures, adaptive triggers, headset audio, speakers, microphones, or light customization. Support depends on the phone, controller, operating system, and app. Sony documents substantial DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 mobile limitations, while Apple notes that audio-jack and light support varies.
Recommended Free Tools
The controller keeps reconnecting to a console
- Turn the console off temporarily.
- Use the controller’s explicit Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Pair manually from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.
- DualSense models that support multiple pairing slots can use those slots when switching among phone, console, PC, and tablet; follow Sony’s instructions.
A wired controller is not detected
- Use a data-capable cable or adapter.
- Confirm USB host/OTG support and the controller’s wired mode.
- Unlock the phone, reseat the connector, and remove the case if it blocks the plug.
- Check whether the game supports wired input.
Bluetooth, USB, or a dedicated mobile controller?
| Option | Best for | Main trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Xbox or PlayStation controller | Full-size comfort and use across phone, console, PC, or TV | Needs charging or batteries and usually a phone clip or stand |
| Bluetooth third-party pad | Lower cost and Android/iPhone flexibility | Modes, mappings, firmware, and game compatibility require careful checking |
| USB-C or Lightning plug-in controller | Handheld form factor and no phone Bluetooth pairing | Must match the phone port, dimensions, case, and game support |
| Cloud- or remote-play-focused controller | Streaming from a console, PC, or cloud service | Still subject to that service’s approved-controller list |
Use a traditional controller if you already own one, want console-grade ergonomics, or need one pad for several systems. Consider a dedicated plug-in controller if you play on the phone frequently and want a compact handheld shape. Before buying, verify phone-port fit, case clearance, operating-system minimum, target-game support, battery or pass-through behavior, comfort, and any optional companion-app subscription. Product examples include the Backbone One’s native-port designs for Lightning and USB-C phones (Lightning model; USB-C model).
