There is no single cable that makes a PlayStation 2 act like a modern USB video device. For original-console gameplay, convert the PS2’s analog AV output for a monitor or feed it through a capture device; to play on the computer without the console, use PCSX2. Networking a PS2 and PC is a separate, more advanced setup.
Choose the connection that matches your goal
| What you want to do | Recommended route | Original PS2 needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Play on a PC monitor | PS2-to-HDMI adapter or retro scaler into a monitor’s HDMI input | Yes |
| Record or stream original-console gameplay | PS2 video into an analog capture device, or into a scaler and then an HDMI capture card | Yes |
| Play PS2 games on the PC | PCSX2, with a legally dumped BIOS and game files you are entitled to use | No |
| Share files or use compatible homebrew loading | PS2 Ethernet and PC/NAS on the same local network, with compatible software | Usually |
| Use a PS2 controller on the PC | USB controller adapter or another compatible gamepad | No |
These are different tasks: the PS2’s USB ports are not a general-purpose video output, and a controller connection does not connect the console’s picture to the computer.
How PS2 video reaches a PC
The PS2 sends analog video and audio from its proprietary AV MULTI OUT port. Its usual composite cable has yellow video and red/white audio plugs. Component video uses green, blue and red plugs for the picture, with separate red/white audio. The red component-video plug is not the red audio plug.
Composite is widely compatible but generally softer, with more color bleeding. Component is usually cleaner when the console, cable and receiving equipment all support YPbPr correctly. Sony’s PS2 connection guidance describes the AV MULTI OUT connection and display-cable options.

- WORKS WITH PS2 & PS1 — PHAT AND SLIM — Connect your PS2 (both original Phat and Slim models) or PS1 directly to any modern HDTV, monitor, or projector via HDMI. No drivers required. Just plug in and play your classic game library on your modern display within minutes.
- WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PICTURE — This adapter converts your PS2/PS1's analog AV signal to HDMI so it works on modern TVs. The PS2 hardware outputs a standard-definition signal (480p max) — the adapter upscales this to 720p for a cleaner look, but cannot go beyond the console's own limits. Great for retro gaming; not a 4K upgrade.
- 4:3 / 16:9 ASPECT RATIO SWITCH — One button to toggle between classic 4:3 and widescreen 16:9 display. Supports 480p and 720p resolution output. Low-latency signal processing for responsive, lag-free gameplay — ideal for action and rhythm games where timing matters.
- POWER REQUIRED — PLEASE READ BEFORE BUYING — This adapter requires an external DC 5V/1A USB power source to operate. A USB cable is included; a USB power adapter is NOT included. Use any standard phone charger or plug into your TV's USB port. No power = no signal output.
- IMPORTANT — PS2 AND PS1 ONLY — Works exclusively via the PS2/PS1 AV output port. Does NOT support PS3, PS4, or PS5. Does NOT work with HDMI capture cards, splitters, or passthrough devices — connect directly from console to TV. Not compatible with BlackMagic brand displays.
Many PS2 games output 480i; some support 480p, and video mode can vary by game. A converter or capture device that cannot handle the signal may show a black screen, lose sync, or produce a poor image. Before buying accessories, check the SCPH model number on the console label. Fat and slim revisions differ in expansion and networking hardware, and accessory compatibility is not identical across every revision.
For monitor display: use an adapter or scaler
The simplest arrangement is PS2 → PS2-to-HDMI adapter or scaler → monitor or TV HDMI input. This displays the console on an HDMI screen; it does not, by itself, send video to the PC.
Most laptop HDMI ports are outputs, not inputs. Plugging a PS2-to-HDMI adapter into a laptop usually will not show the game. To get the picture into the computer, add an HDMI capture card: PS2 → adapter/scaler → capture card HDMI IN → USB to PC.

Generic PS2-to-HDMI adapters vary. Depending on the adapter, console revision and game mode, problems can include lag, incorrect 4:3 scaling, weak deinterlacing, audio dropouts, or no picture with certain games. Verify the intended modes and your seller’s return policy. A basic adapter may be adequate for casual display, but it is not equivalent to a scaler designed for retro-console signals.

For recording or streaming original hardware
Option 1: Capture analog video directly
If you already have an analog capture device that supports the PS2’s output, connect the console with composite or component cables, connect the device to the PC, and capture with software such as OBS Studio. This can minimize the number of devices in the chain and is useful for archiving the console’s output. Many newer capture cards accept HDMI only, so check the exact device’s inputs before buying. Older Elgato hardware supports certain composite or component configurations, depending on model and software; see its supported-console guidance.
Option 2: Scale to HDMI, then capture
For a more flexible original-hardware setup, use a component cable where supported, a retro scaler, and an HDMI capture card:

If your PS2 has been hardware- or software-modified, the PS2 HDMI adapter may not function correctly, potentially resulting in a black screen or loss of signal.
- Plug & Play with USB Power Supply: No drivers needed. Simply connect the converter between your PS2 and display, with no complex drivers required, this PS2 to HDMI converter ensures a straightforward installation for a seamless gaming experience.
- Connect the PS2’s AV MULTI OUT to the scaler with a compatible composite or component cable.
- Connect the scaler’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
- If the capture card has HDMI passthrough, connect its HDMI OUT to a TV or monitor.
- Connect the capture card to the PC using the recommended USB port or internal slot.
- In OBS, create a scene, select Sources → + → Video Capture Device, and choose the capture device.
- Select the video standard and signal format the device actually reports. NTSC is used by North American and Japanese consoles; PAL is used in most of Europe and Australia.
- Configure audio, confirm picture and sound, and make a short test recording before a full session.
A scaler and capture card do different jobs: the scaler converts and processes the analog picture, while the capture card delivers the resulting HDMI signal to the PC. The RetroTINK-5X Pro is designed for analog retro-console video and compatibility with modern displays and capture cards; its product page specifies a USB power source capable of 5 V/2 A. A simple converter may cost less, but can have limited controls, weaker deinterlacing, scaling artifacts or added delay. More capable scalers offer better signal handling and aspect-ratio control at higher cost.
For gameplay, use the scaler or capture card’s HDMI passthrough display rather than relying on the OBS preview. Preview latency varies and can make timing-sensitive play uncomfortable. OBS’s console-capture guide explains the Video Capture Source workflow and recommends UVC-compatible devices for best compatibility on macOS and Linux.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn HDMI capture card still needs an upstream converter or scaler: it cannot accept the PS2’s analog output directly. For example, the Elgato Game Capture Neo manual describes HDMI input and passthrough and capture up to 1080p60 over USB 3.0; it is not an analog PS2 input device. Its official US list price was $129.99 when checked August 16, 2026, but price and availability can change.

Play on the PC with PCSX2 instead
If the goal is simply to play PS2 games on a computer, PCSX2 avoids the analog video chain. It can offer higher internal rendering resolutions, controller remapping, save states and PC-based recording. It is not original hardware: compatibility and behavior vary by game, and accessories or timing-sensitive features may differ.
The official PCSX2 project supports Windows, Linux and macOS and requires a BIOS dumped from a legitimately owned PS2. The project’s release listing shows version 2.6.3, released January 28, 2026; check the project’s current release channel when installing. Do not download BIOS files or copyrighted game images from unofficial sites. Legal rules vary by jurisdiction, so use BIOS data and games you are legally entitled to use.

More demanding games can need substantially more CPU performance. Install from the official project, add your BIOS through first-run setup, use legally obtained game images or discs, and configure a controller. Begin with default graphics settings, test the game, then raise internal resolution gradually. If performance or graphics become unreliable, return to defaults before applying game-specific patches or hacks.
For controller mapping, use PCSX2’s configuration rather than assuming every adapter maps buttons correctly. The PCSX2 controller documentation covers profiles and USB devices. Inexpensive PS2-to-USB adapters can have weak analog-stick or button support; dance pads and light guns may need specialized interfaces. A normal controller adapter does not make a GunCon-style light gun work with an arbitrary display.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Connect the PS2 and PC over Ethernet
Networking is useful for compatible homebrew workflows, file transfers, or some network-enabled games—not for transmitting the PS2’s video. Sony documented connecting a PS2 through its rear NETWORK connector using 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet, typically with the PS2 and PC on the same router or hub. See Sony’s network connection guide.
A basic physical layout is PS2 Ethernet → router or switch ← PC or NAS. A router is usually simpler than a direct PC-to-console cable because it can provide DHCP and put both devices on the same local network. Most slim models have built-in Ethernet; fat models may have an integrated port or use a network adapter. Check the SCPH revision rather than assuming your console has the expected hardware.
Using an SMB share to load files is not a standard Sony plug-and-play feature. It generally requires compatible homebrew software, a suitable memory-card boot method or other modification, correct share permissions and network settings, and legally obtained game files. Legacy SMB software may not work with modern authentication or security settings. Do not treat homebrew loading as an official general-purpose sharing feature.
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot by symptom
No picture or a black screen
- Confirm the PS2 is on and the display or capture card is set to the correct input.
- Reseat the cable at AV MULTI OUT and verify whether it is composite or component.
- For component, confirm the receiving device expects YPbPr rather than RGB, and make sure the red video plug is not confused with red audio.
- Test the console on a known-compatible TV and try another game, since a game may switch video modes.
- If HDMI is involved, connect the scaler directly to a display to isolate the capture card. Check that the converter supports 480i and the game’s resulting mode.
- Try another direct USB 3.0 port on the PC if the capture device is not receiving signal.
Picture but no audio
- Check the red and white audio plugs and confirm the capture device receives audio over the selected input.
- Check OBS’s mixer and the operating system’s input mute setting.
- Test audio on a TV or headphones through passthrough, if available.
Delayed, stretched or blurry picture
- For play, use HDMI passthrough rather than the OBS preview; avoid low-quality converters if latency is a problem.
- Present standard-definition content at its intended 4:3 aspect ratio unless you deliberately want it stretched.
- Blur can come from composite video, poor conversion, double scaling, unsuitable deinterlacing or enlarging 480i without a suitable scaler.
Audio out of sync or capture card missing from OBS
- Make a short recording to determine whether sync trouble is in the preview or the recording. Remove unnecessary splitters and adapters and use the capture device’s recommended cable and port.
- Close other apps using the capture device, reconnect it directly rather than through a hub, then re-add it as a Video Capture Device in OBS.
- Install the manufacturer’s current utility or firmware where applicable. On macOS or Linux, check whether the device is UVC-compatible.
PCSX2 runs slowly
- Restore the default renderer and reduce internal resolution.
- Disable enhancement hacks, check CPU single-thread performance and test the specific game before changing global settings.
- One game running well does not establish that every title will.
Network share does not connect
- Check that the PS2 and PC have valid addresses on the same subnet and that the router is not blocking local device traffic.
- Verify Windows firewall rules and share permissions.
- Check the PS2’s IP, gateway and DNS settings, and whether the share’s authentication or SMB version is compatible with the PS2 software.
- Confirm the console actually has Ethernet hardware; a USB cable is not a substitute for the network connection.
Which setup makes sense?
- Display only: a PS2-to-HDMI adapter is the simplest low-cost route, with quality and compatibility compromises.
- Capture on a budget: use a compatible analog capture device if you already have one; verify its supported signal first.
- Reliable original-hardware capture: component cable, capable scaler and HDMI capture card with passthrough offer the most controllable chain, but add cost and setup.
- PC-only play: PCSX2 avoids capture hardware, provided your PC can run the game and you have legally usable BIOS and game files.
- Network/homebrew: choose Ethernet and SMB only if you are comfortable with homebrew configuration and legacy-network compatibility.
