Yes—you can connect a Sony DUALSHOCK 4 to a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC over Bluetooth. Turn off the controller, hold SHARE + PS until the light bar flashes, then add Wireless Controller in Windows Bluetooth settings. Pairing is only the first step: the game may also need native DUALSHOCK 4 support, Steam Input, or an XInput translation layer.
What you need
- A Sony DUALSHOCK 4 controller with charge remaining.
- A Windows PC with working Bluetooth.
- A game or input layer that supports the controller.
- Optional: a USB Bluetooth adapter if your desktop lacks Bluetooth or has unreliable Bluetooth.
- Optional: a micro-USB cable that supports data and charging. Charge-only cables will not provide a wired data connection.
Sony documents PC use with a compatible micro-USB cable and its DUALSHOCK 4 USB Wireless Adaptor. Bluetooth and game support can vary by application; see Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 PC and Mac support guide.
1. Put the DUALSHOCK 4 into pairing mode
- Turn off the controller. If the light bar is on, hold the PS button until it turns off.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Press and hold the SHARE button.
- While holding SHARE, press and hold the PS button.
- Keep holding both buttons until the light bar begins flashing.
The DUALSHOCK 4 uses SHARE + PS. Do not use Create + PS, which is the pairing combination for the newer PS5 DualSense controller. Keep the PS4 turned off or out of Bluetooth range during setup so it does not attempt to reclaim the controller.

- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Add device, then choose Bluetooth.
- Choose Wireless Controller, DUALSHOCK 4 Wireless Controller, or the equivalent detected entry.
- Wait for Windows to report that the device is connected.
Windows may use the generic name Wireless Controller. That name is normal and does not mean the device is counterfeit.

3. Pair it in Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Devices and select Bluetooth & other devices.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Select Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Choose Bluetooth.
- Select the detected wireless controller.
Labels can vary slightly by Windows update, language, or interface. If the controller does not appear, confirm that its light bar is flashing rapidly and repeat the pairing-mode steps.
4. Confirm that Windows recognizes the controller
Pairing does not prove that a game will accept the controller. Test Windows input before opening the game:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the wireless controller and choose Properties.
- Press buttons, move both sticks, operate the triggers, and test the D-pad.
Button names and axis labels may differ from those shown for an Xbox controller. If input works in joy.cpl but not in one game, Bluetooth is probably working and the remaining issue is game or launcher compatibility.
5. Make it work in Steam
Steam is often the easiest environment because Steam Input can translate or configure DUALSHOCK 4 input.
- Pair the controller with Windows first.
- Open Steam and go to Settings.
- Open the controller section and confirm that Steam detects the controller.
- Enable or configure PlayStation controller support or Steam Input where appropriate.
- Launch the game and test its controller layout.
Steam’s labels and layout change periodically; relevant options may appear under Controller, External Gamepad Settings, or a game’s controller-properties page.

Native DUALSHOCK 4 support is preferable when a game provides it because it may preserve PlayStation button prompts. Steam Input can improve compatibility, but it may produce Xbox-style prompts and can conflict with another remapping utility. When troubleshooting, use one primary input layer at a time.
6. Make it work in Epic, Game Pass, EA, Ubisoft, emulators, and standalone games
Non-Steam games vary substantially. A game may support the DUALSHOCK 4 directly, recognize it only over USB, or expect Microsoft’s XInput format instead. A launcher may detect the controller even when the game itself does not.

Use this order:
- Check the game’s controller settings and native controller support.
- Test the controller in
joy.cpl. - Try the game over USB to determine whether Bluetooth is the variable.
- If the game expects XInput, use one reputable controller-remapping solution configured to expose an XInput controller.
- Close Steam Input or other remappers while testing the alternative.
DS4Windows is one possible XInput translation approach, not a universal requirement. It adds software, configuration, virtual-controller drivers, and possible conflicts, so try native support or Steam Input first. Download remapping software only from its genuine official project distribution page—not random mirrors or “controller fixer” utilities.
Bluetooth feature limitations
Basic buttons and sticks can work wirelessly when Windows and the game recognize the controller, but Bluetooth on a non-Sony PC does not guarantee every DUALSHOCK 4 feature. Sony lists the following limitations for supported devices other than compatible Sony Xperia devices:

Actual behavior also depends on the controller model, Windows drivers, connection method, and game. Do not assume that Bluetooth pairing will route PC audio through the controller’s 3.5-mm headset jack. Sony’s detailed feature limitations are documented here.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The PC cannot find the controller
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in Windows.
- Make sure the controller is off and the USB cable is disconnected.
- Hold SHARE + PS until the light bar flashes.
- Remove any old Wireless Controller entry from Windows Bluetooth settings.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then restart Windows.
- Move the controller close to the PC and temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices.
- If using a desktop adapter, try a different adapter or USB port; an obstructed or weak antenna can reduce reliability.
- Reset the controller and repeat pairing.
Pressing the PS button alone normally attempts to reconnect to the last console or device; it does not reliably place the controller into pairing mode.

Common causes include a low battery, stale Windows pairing data, Bluetooth-driver or adapter problems, radio interference, or the controller attempting to reconnect to another device. Remove the Windows entry, turn off the PS4, reset and fully charge the controller, restart Bluetooth, and pair again. A USB connection is a useful way to distinguish a Bluetooth problem from a controller or battery fault.
Windows sees it, but the game does not
- Run
joy.cpland verify button and stick input. - Check whether the game supports controller input at all.
- Configure Steam Input or the game’s native DUALSHOCK 4 support.
- Close competing remapping tools.
- For an XInput-only game, use one reputable XInput translation method.
- Test with USB.
The game shows Xbox button prompts
This is normal when the DUALSHOCK 4 is being translated to XInput. Look for a PlayStation-button option in the game, use native support or a suitable Steam Input layout, or follow the on-screen positions of the physical buttons. Xbox prompts do not by themselves indicate a defective controller.
Steam detects it, but another launcher does not
Steam Input may be translating the controller only for Steam-managed games. Adding a non-Steam game to Steam and launching it through Steam can sometimes help, but it is not guaranteed. Otherwise, use the game’s native support or a separate input layer—never assume both layers should run simultaneously.
Rumble, motion controls, touchpad, or audio do not work
These features may be limited or unavailable over Bluetooth on non-Sony devices. Try USB if the game requires them. For the headset jack specifically, ordinary Bluetooth pairing should not be treated as a reliable PC-audio connection.

You cannot reconnect the controller to the PS4
Changing the active device requires pairing again. Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 to the PS4 with a compatible USB cable, press the PS button, and wait for it to pair. Disconnect the cable afterward if you want wireless play. Sony’s instructions are in its pairing guide.
If pairing remains stuck, turn the controller over and press the small reset button in the hole near the L2 shoulder button with a suitable pin for several seconds, then charge it and repeat the process. Sony also provides DUALSHOCK 4 troubleshooting guidance.

What if the PC has no Bluetooth?
Add a USB Bluetooth adapter that explicitly supports your Windows version and has reliable drivers. A desktop may benefit from an adapter with a better-positioned antenna; a low-profile adapter is more convenient for a laptop. Avoid adapters that require obscure bundled software.

Multiple DUALSHOCK 4 controllers
More than one controller may work, but do not assume a PC will handle multiple wireless controllers as seamlessly as a PS4. Results depend on the Bluetooth adapter, drivers, interference, Windows configuration, and the game. Pair and test controllers one at a time when diagnosing connection or input conflicts.
Bluetooth pairing versus Remote Play
If your goal is to control a PS4 or PS5 from the PC, that is a different use case from playing native PC games. PlayStation Remote Play uses Sony’s Remote Play application; see Sony’s Remote Play guide.
