you can connect a PS5 DualSense controller to Windows 11 in two ways: with a USB-C data cable or over Bluetooth. USB is the quickest and most reliable first option. Bluetooth is convenient if your PC has working Bluetooth hardware. However, Windows recognizing the controller does not guarantee that every game will support it; Steam Input or DS4Windows may be needed for some titles.
Sony lists Windows 11 as supporting DualSense USB and Bluetooth connections. Feature and game compatibility still vary by title. See Sony’s DualSense PC connection guide and Microsoft’s Windows 11 controller guidance.
What you need
- A PS5 DualSense wireless controller.
- A Windows 11 PC.
- Either a USB-C cable that supports data transfer or a PC with working Bluetooth.
- A charged controller.
For firmware updates, Sony provides the free PlayStation Accessories app for Windows. It can update the DualSense and manage supported controller settings, but it is not a universal compatibility layer for PC games.

USB is the best starting point because it avoids Bluetooth pairing, wireless interference and battery concerns.

A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
- Turn on your Windows 11 PC.
- Connect the DualSense to the PC using a USB-C cable.
- Wait for Windows to identify the controller.
- Open Steam or your game and check its controller settings.
The controller may light up briefly, charge and appear as a game controller or input device. Compatible games may work immediately without additional software.
If the controller only charges
A light or charging indicator does not prove that the cable carries data. Charge-only USB-C cables can power the DualSense while preventing Windows from detecting its inputs.
- Try the original PS5 cable or another known data-capable USB-C cable.
- Connect directly to the PC rather than through a USB hub.
- Try another USB port, including a USB-A port with a suitable cable.
- Restart Windows with the controller disconnected, then reconnect it.
- Test the cable with another data device if possible.
Method 2: Connect the DualSense over Bluetooth
Use this method when your PC has built-in Bluetooth or a working USB Bluetooth adapter.

- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold the Create button and PS button at the same time.
- Keep holding them until the light bar begins flashing.
- In Windows 11, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Select Add device → Bluetooth.
- Choose the DualSense when it appears in the device list.
After pairing, the light should blink and the player indicator should illuminate. Windows 11 menu wording can change between updates, so look for the Bluetooth device-pairing option if the labels differ slightly.
Sony’s PC guidance says the controller can be paired with only one device at a time. Pairing it with the PC may therefore require pairing it again with the PS5 later.

How to check that Windows recognizes the controller
Test Windows before troubleshooting a particular game:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices and confirm that the DualSense is listed as connected, or that the USB controller is present.
- Press the Windows key, search for Control Panel and open it.
- Go to Hardware and Sound → Devices and Printers.
- Locate the controller and open its controller or game-controller properties if available.
- Test the buttons and analog sticks.
A successful Bluetooth pairing only proves that Windows has established a connection. The game still needs to support the controller or receive translated input through a compatibility layer.
Set up the controller in Steam
- Connect the DualSense by USB or pair it over Bluetooth.
- Open Steam and go to Steam Settings.
- Open Steam’s controller section and confirm that the PlayStation controller is detected.
- Launch the game and test it.
- If the game does not respond correctly, enable Steam Input for that specific game and restart it.
Steam Input translates or manages controller input so that more games can use the DualSense. It is different from native DualSense support:
- Native support: The game directly understands the DualSense and may show PlayStation symbols or support haptics and adaptive triggers.
- Steam Input: Steam provides compatibility and remapping, but the game may identify the controller differently.
- XInput emulation: Software makes the DualSense appear like an Xbox controller, improving compatibility with many older or XInput-only games.
Do not enable multiple remappers automatically. Steam Input and DS4Windows running together can produce duplicate or erratic inputs.
Using the DualSense with non-Steam games
Games from Epic Games Store, the Xbox app and PC Game Pass, Ubisoft Connect, EA app, standalone launchers and older PC games vary widely in controller support.

- If it does not, add the game or launcher to Steam and try Steam Input.
- If the game requires an Xbox/XInput controller, use DS4Windows.
- Check the game’s own controller and remapping options.
Adding a non-Steam shortcut to Steam is not guaranteed to work. Some launchers, anti-cheat systems, elevated processes or separate game executables can interfere with Steam Input. If a launcher shortcut fails, adding the game’s actual executable may help, provided the game permits that configuration.
Do you need DS4Windows?
No—not for basic USB or Bluetooth pairing, and not for games that already support the DualSense or work through Steam Input.
DS4Windows is a separate open-source input mapper and virtual-controller emulator for Windows. It can be useful when a non-Steam game only accepts XInput, does not detect the DualSense or needs detailed profiles and remapping.

Download DS4Windows only from a trustworthy project source. It is not Sony software. It also adds another software layer, may produce Xbox button prompts and can conflict with Steam Input. Use one active input-translation layer at a time.
Which DualSense features work on Windows 11?
Basic buttons, sticks and ordinary controller input are the most broadly compatible features. Advanced features depend on both the connection method and the individual game.

For advanced features, use USB, update the controller with PlayStation Accessories and check the game publisher’s PC support documentation. Emulating the controller as an Xbox pad can improve compatibility while removing or limiting access to native DualSense features.

The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in Windows.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Hold PS until the controller turns off.
- Hold Create + PS until the light flashes.
- Remove an old DualSense entry from Windows Bluetooth devices.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, or restart the PC.
- Update the Bluetooth adapter driver through the PC or motherboard manufacturer.
- Try another Bluetooth adapter if the built-in hardware is unreliable.
- Test USB to determine whether the problem is limited to Bluetooth.
Sony’s connection troubleshooting also includes resetting the controller. Use the small reset button on the back with a suitable pin, then try pairing again.
Windows sees the controller, but the game does not
- Close the game completely.
- Choose one approach: native support, Steam Input or DS4Windows.
- Reconnect the controller and restart the game.
- Try USB instead of Bluetooth.
- Check the game’s controller settings.
- Use DS4Windows only if the game requires XInput or still cannot detect the controller.
Double inputs or erratic controls
This commonly happens when Steam Input and DS4Windows both translate the same controller. Close DS4Windows and test Steam Input alone. If you use DS4Windows, disable Steam’s PlayStation handling for that game where appropriate, then restart the game.
Why does the game show Xbox button prompts?
Xbox prompts usually mean the game is receiving an emulated Xbox/XInput controller, the game has no PlayStation glyphs or Steam Input is translating the DualSense. This does not necessarily indicate a faulty connection.

- Confirm that the game explicitly supports DualSense features on PC.
- Switch to USB.
- Update the controller through PlayStation Accessories.
- Disable input emulation if the game supports native DualSense input.
- Check the game’s PC support documentation.
Full PS5 functionality should not be assumed on Windows 11. Sony states that feature availability varies by game and device.

The controller disconnects or will not turn off
Toggle Bluetooth, restart Windows, update Bluetooth drivers and remove and re-pair the controller. Test USB to isolate a wireless problem. These symptoms can reflect a Windows Bluetooth state or driver issue, but they are not universal Windows 11 defects.

Reconnect the controller to your PS5
Connect the DualSense to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable and press the PS button. After it reconnects, remove the cable for wireless play. If the PS5 does not respond, try another known data-capable cable.
Alternative: PlayStation Remote Play
You can also use the DualSense with supported PlayStation Remote Play applications on a PC. This is a different use case: the controller operates a streamed PS5 or PS4 session rather than serving only as a local Windows-game controller. See Sony’s PlayStation gaming on PC information.
