How to Connect a PS5 DualSense Controller to Steam Deck

Pair a DualSense with Steam Deck over Bluetooth or USB-C, get games responding with Steam Input, and troubleshoot common connection and feature issues.

To connect a PS5 DualSense controller wirelessly, turn it off, hold Create + PS until its light bar flashes, then select it in the Steam Deck’s Bluetooth settings. For a wired connection, use a USB-C cable that carries data. Basic controller input should work through Steam, but individual games and advanced DualSense features vary.

Connect the DualSense to Steam Deck over Bluetooth

  1. Unplug the controller. Disconnect its USB cable before starting Bluetooth pairing. PlayStation’s DualSense pairing instructions specify that the cable should be disconnected.
  2. Turn the controller off. If its player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until the light goes out.
  3. Enter pairing mode. Hold the Create button and the PS button at the same time until the light bar flashes. Use Create—not the Share-button shortcut used by some older PlayStation controllers.
  4. Open Bluetooth settings on the Deck. In Game Mode, press the Steam button and open Settings → Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled. SteamOS labels and menus can vary between builds.
  5. Select the controller. Choose the device when it appears. Its name may be DualSense Wireless Controller, Wireless Controller, or a similar variation.
  6. Check the connection. Wait for the Deck to show the controller as connected, then try navigating Steam or open a game’s controller settings.

Valve lists PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 controllers among its recommended Steam Deck controller options and supports controller connections over Bluetooth or USB in its Steam Deck FAQ.

Use USB-C if Bluetooth is not working

  1. Connect the DualSense to the Deck with a USB-C cable that supports data. A charge-only cable can power the controller without sending input.
  2. Press the PS button if the controller does not wake or connect automatically.
  3. Wait for Steam to detect it, then test input in Steam or a game.

USB avoids Bluetooth pairing and wireless interference, and it charges the controller while you play. It is also a useful way to determine whether a problem is limited to Bluetooth. The trade-offs are the cable and the possibility of a faulty cable, dock, or hub. Valve documents support for both USB and Bluetooth controller connections in its Steam Deck FAQ.

Get the controller working in a game

A successful Bluetooth or USB connection does not guarantee that every game will handle the controller or show PlayStation button prompts correctly. There are three separate layers: the Deck connects to the device, Steam recognizes it and can assign a layout, and the game interprets the input. Steam Input provides controller configuration and device support, but the right setup can differ by game; see Valve’s Steam Input device documentation.

PlayStation DualSense™ Wireless Controller – Midnight Black - For PS5, PC, MAC & Mobile
  • Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
  • Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
  • Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
  • Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
  • Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
  1. Open the game’s controller or layout settings from Steam and confirm the DualSense is listed as active.
  2. Try the default gamepad layout. If the game lacks native PlayStation controller support, enable Steam Input or choose a community layout.
  3. If the game has native DualSense support, test the game’s recommended configuration; depending on the title, that may mean changing Steam Input settings.
  4. Quit and relaunch the game after changing its controller configuration. If the controller was connected after the game started, restart the game as well.

For a non-Steam game, adding it to Steam may let you try Steam Input. Emulators often need their own controller configuration. Launchers, Proton compatibility, and anti-cheat systems can also affect individual titles, so there is no single Steam Input setting that suits every game.

What DualSense features work on Steam Deck?

Basic buttons and sticks can be used as a gamepad, and Steam Input layouts are available over either connection type. Advanced features depend on the game, software, and connection; PlayStation warns that DualSense features vary by device and game in its connection and feature guidance.

Feature Bluetooth USB-C

Wireless play Yes No
Charging while playing No, unless charged separately Yes
Haptic feedback Not guaranteed; depends on game and software More likely where supported; PC haptics may require a wired connection
Adaptive triggers Depends on game and software More likely where supported, but not guaranteed
Headset jack and audio features Not guaranteed PlayStation says the headset jack requires a wired PC connection; Steam Deck game and audio support can still vary
Touchpad, microphone, and gyro Do not assume full support; behavior depends on game and software Do not assume full support; behavior depends on game and software

If a particular feature matters, test the game over USB as well as Bluetooth and check that title’s controller support. A working gamepad connection alone does not establish support for haptics, adaptive triggers, touchpad gestures, gyro, headset audio, or microphone functions.

Troubleshoot pairing and input problems

The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings

  • Hold PS until the controller turns off, unplug its cable, then hold Create + PS until the light flashes.
  • Check that the controller is not still connected to a PS5, phone, PC, or another Bluetooth host, and make sure it has charge.
  • Toggle Bluetooth off and on in Deck settings. If an old DualSense or Wireless Controller entry is saved, remove it and pair again; restart the Deck if needed.
  • Try detecting the controller with another Bluetooth device. If it is not discoverable there either, the problem may be with the controller rather than the Deck.
  • Try a USB-C data cable to bypass Bluetooth.

Steam’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance and forget-and-re-pair instructions are for Steam Link, not specifically Steam Deck; their general suggestions include confirming pairing mode, testing another host, and removing stale pairings.

It connects but does not control the game

  • Check that Steam sees the controller and that the game has an active controller layout.
  • Try the default layout, then test Steam Input or a community layout if the game does not support PlayStation input natively.
  • Check whether another controller or the Deck’s built-in controls are taking priority.
  • For an emulator, configure the controller in the emulator; for a non-Steam game, try launching it through Steam.
  • Restart the game after changing the layout or connecting the controller.

It disconnects or input is unreliable

  • Remove the Bluetooth pairing and set it up again; charge the controller and restart the Deck.
  • Test a USB-C data connection. If USB works reliably but Bluetooth does not, focus troubleshooting on wireless pairing or interference.
  • If the issue occurs only wirelessly, try playing away from congested wireless devices or USB 3 hubs.
  • Consider updating controller firmware if it is not discoverable, drops immediately, or behaves unreliably. Sony provides firmware updates through the PlayStation Accessories application for Windows or through a PS5. A firmware update is not a prerequisite for every pairing.

The game shows Xbox-style prompts or advanced features are missing

Xbox-style prompts do not necessarily mean the controller failed to connect; a game or Steam Input may be using a generic or Xbox-style input layout. Check the game’s interface options for PlayStation glyphs, try another suitable Steam Input layout, or use the prompts the game provides. For missing haptics, triggers, or other DualSense-specific functions, check the game’s support and test USB; neither connection guarantees those features.

Reconnect the DualSense to a PS5

Connect the controller to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable and press the PS button. PlayStation documents this wired reconnection method in its DualSense pairing instructions. If the controller remains unusable, Sony’s accessories support page describes resetting it with the small reset button on the back, then reconnecting it to the PS5 over USB and pressing PS.
