To connect a Razer BlackWidow Chroma, plug it directly into a Windows PC, install Razer Synapse 4, sign in with a Razer ID, then select the keyboard on Synapse’s dashboard. This is a wired USB setup, not a Bluetooth pairing process. The original BlackWidow Chroma model family RZ03-0122x is listed as compatible with Synapse 4; check your keyboard’s model number before applying model-specific advice.
Synapse 4 requires 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. The keyboard can still type as a basic USB keyboard without Synapse, but software features such as lighting customization and remapping require compatible software. If Synapse does not see it, start with the USB connection and work through the fixes below before reinstalling.
Check which BlackWidow Chroma you have
“BlackWidow Chroma” covers multiple generations and variants. Turn the keyboard over and find the model number on its label; it begins with RZ03-. The original BlackWidow Chroma support page covers the RZ03-0122x family. A Chroma V2, Tournament Edition, 2019 model, or another BlackWidow variant may have different connections, firmware, or support details. Use the exact model number when checking Razer’s model support page or choosing firmware.

- A compatible BlackWidow Chroma and its original or other suitable data-capable USB cable, if detachable.
- A PC running 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. Razer does not list macOS as supported for Synapse 4; a Mac may accept ordinary keyboard input, but do not assume Synapse customization is available.
- Internet access to download Synapse and a Razer ID to sign in.
- Permission to install software and device drivers.
For first setup, connect the keyboard directly to the PC. Avoid a USB hub, monitor port, docking station, KVM switch, or extension cable. If your model has two USB plugs, connect both directly to the computer. On a desktop, try a rear motherboard port if a front port is unreliable.

Install Synapse 4 and connect the keyboard
- Connect the keyboard directly to the PC and check that Windows receives keystrokes.
- Go to Razer’s Synapse 4 download page and select Download Now.
- Run the installer and approve the Windows User Account Control prompt.
- Accept the license agreement with CONTINUE, then select INSTALL. Leave Include RAZER CHROMA APP enabled if you want that separate app; optional suggestions can be accepted or skipped.
- Sign in with your Razer ID and let installation finish.
- Restart Windows if prompted. If the keyboard was connected during installation and is not detected, restart the PC manually as well.
When Synapse opens, look for the keyboard on the dashboard and select it. Device pages such as LIGHTING or key customization should be available. Try a small, reversible change—such as a lighting effect or a harmless key assignment—and confirm it takes effect.
Set lighting, remap keys, and assign macros
RGB lighting
- Select the keyboard from the Synapse dashboard.
- Open LIGHTING.
- Choose Quick Effects for a preset, or Advanced Effects for more detailed customization.
- Apply the effect and check that the keyboard responds. Interface labels can change between software releases.
If you use Windows 11 and Chroma synchronization is not working, Windows Dynamic Lighting may be competing with Synapse. Razer lists disabling Dynamic Lighting as a troubleshooting step for synchronized lighting problems; try this only if relevant rather than changing it as a routine setup requirement.

Key assignments and macros
Select the keyboard, choose the key you want to change, select a function category, assign the desired action, and save it. Depending on the options exposed for your model, an assignment might be another key, a shortcut, a multimedia action, or a macro. A normal remap is different from recording a macro or linking a profile to a game or application.

Do not assume that every configuration is stored on the keyboard. Some functions rely on Synapse running in Windows. Razer says on-the-fly macro recording requires Synapse to be running in the background; if it is closed, the recording indicator may blink three times and turn off instead of starting recording.

If the keyboard types but Synapse does not detect it
Windows can recognize the keyboard as a standard USB input device even while Synapse cannot communicate with it. Typing successfully therefore does not prove that the Razer software connection is working. Try these steps in order, testing Synapse after each one.
- Confirm the model and software. Check the RZ03- model number and make sure you installed Synapse 4, not an unsuitable legacy package. Confirm that the PC runs 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and consult Razer’s device detection guidance.
- Connect directly and change ports. Disconnect hubs, docks, monitor ports, KVMs, and extensions. Try another PC port; on a desktop, prefer a rear motherboard port. Connect both plugs directly if the model has two.
- Restart Windows. A restart after first installing Synapse or completing an update can resolve detection issues.
- Update Synapse and Windows. Install pending software and Windows updates. Only use a firmware update listed for your exact keyboard model; firmware is not the first remedy for a missing device.
- Check compatibility mode. Inspect the Synapse application or shortcut properties and make sure Windows compatibility mode is not enabled.
- Repair Synapse. Use the Synapse installer’s repair option or Windows’ app repair option if available. The exact button location can vary by release.
- Consider software conflicts, including Riot Vanguard. Razer has identified Riot Vanguard version 1.7.0.27 as a possible cause of blocked Razer drivers. Check the installed version and update Riot software if an update is available. If testing without the component is necessary, follow Razer or Riot guidance and restore required game-security software afterward; do not uninstall it automatically as a first step.
- Test another Windows PC. Use a supported Synapse version and a direct USB connection. If the keyboard works there, investigate the original PC’s ports, drivers, permissions, security software, or Windows installation. If it fails on multiple computers, the cable, keyboard hardware, firmware, or model support may be at fault.
Only after these checks should you consider a clean reinstall or contact Razer Support. If reinstalling, avoid running Synapse 3 and 4 side by side; use Razer’s migration guidance for existing profiles.

When Synapse sees the keyboard but lighting or settings fail
If the keyboard appears in Synapse but the RGB effect does not change, confirm that the effect is enabled for the intended device and profile. Close competing RGB-control software, test with a direct USB connection, and check Windows Dynamic Lighting if synchronized lighting is affected. Razer’s BlackWidow Chroma troubleshooting page also recommends updating or repairing Synapse when lighting problems persist.

If there are no lights at all, first check whether Windows receives keystrokes. Then test another direct USB port and, if possible, another PC. This helps separate a software profile problem from a cable, port, power, LED, or controller fault.
Synapse 3 or Synapse 4?
For a new setup, use Synapse 4. Razer says it supports devices that were previously compatible with Synapse 3, and lists the original RZ03-0122x BlackWidow Chroma as compatible. Synapse 3 stopped receiving updates and cloud services on February 3, 2026. An already-installed Synapse 3 setup may still configure devices locally, but it is retired for updates and cloud services; Razer does not say every installation will immediately stop launching.
Razer does not recommend running both versions concurrently because of possible configuration conflicts. Installing Synapse 4 removes Synapse 3, according to Razer. If you need to move profiles, use the Profile Migration Tool rather than manually copying profile files.
Firmware and hardware faults
Check firmware only after identifying the exact model. Razer’s firmware page for BlackWidow 2019 models RZ03-02860 and RZ03-02861 lists firmware v1.01; that is not evidence that the updater applies to the original RZ03-0122x. Use only the updater on the support page for your model, close Synapse and other applications before a manual update, and do not interrupt power during installation. Never flash firmware intended for another BlackWidow generation.
If the keyboard fails to type or light up across multiple direct ports and another PC, the issue may be physical rather than a Synapse setting. Check the cable and connector for damage and contact Razer Support for model- and region-specific repair or warranty options. A console may accept basic keyboard input in some cases, but Synapse customization is a PC-software workflow and console behavior depends on the console and game.
