How to Connect an Internet Radio Server to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To connect an internet radio server to YouTube Live, route the station’s program audio into an encoder that can send both audio and video, then connect that encoder to YouTube with the live stream’s ingestion URL and stream key. YouTube needs video as well as audio, so add a suitable visual—such as a static image or other video source—even if the broadcast is audio-first.

The YouTube connection settings are broadly consistent, but capturing audio from the radio server is specific to its software, operating system, and output path. Identify how your station exposes its program audio before choosing the encoder setup.

What you need before connecting

  • A radio audio output: Identify where the station’s finished program audio can be accessed. It may come from the radio server or another point in the playback chain; the exact capture method depends on your system.
  • An encoder: It must accept that audio and send an audio-video stream to YouTube. An audio-only feed is not sufficient: YouTube’s stream-health documentation identifies a missing video stream as an issue.
  • A visual source: Supply video alongside the radio audio. It does not have to come from a camera; choose a visual appropriate for your program and rights.
  • A YouTube live stream: You will need its ingestion URL and stream key, sometimes called the stream name by encoder documentation.
  • A stable upload connection: Reserve enough upstream capacity for the configured video bitrate and overhead, and check it before broadcasting.

Connect the radio audio to an encoder

This is the station-specific part of the setup. First determine how your radio system exposes the final program mix: for example, whether it provides an output that your encoder can select directly or whether the audio is routed through another part of your playback chain. Then configure the encoder to receive that signal and verify that its audio meter responds while the station is playing.

There is no universal radio-server command or capture setting: the server product, operating system, and audio routing determine the correct method. If you cannot identify a usable output, consult the documentation for the radio software and operating system, or ask the station administrator to trace the program audio path. Do not assume that the encoder can capture a server’s audio merely because both run on the same machine.

Set up YouTube Live ingestion

  1. Create or select the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Open the stream’s settings and retrieve the ingestion URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that stream.
  2. Enter the connection details in your encoder. If it has separate fields, put the ingestion URL in the server or URL field and the stream key in the key field. If it uses one field, enter the URL and key in the format it requests, commonly STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the encoder’s field instructions rather than adding the key twice.
  3. Choose RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Confirm that the encoder is using the correct RTMPS endpoint and path; the connection uses TLS on port 443 and requires SNI with the server hostname. A mistyped path or hostname can prevent connection even when the key is correct.
  4. Provide both video and audio. Select the station’s program audio and a suitable visual source, then confirm both are present in the encoder preview or meters before sending the feed.

YouTube also documents HLS and DASH ingestion for specialized encoder workflows. HLS is segment-based and is not suited to ultra-low latency; DASH is also segment-based and generally has higher latency than RTMP. For a basic internet-radio simulcast, use these alternatives only when your encoder or production needs call for them.

Choose encoder settings

Use a video bitrate recommendation that matches your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. There is no single bitrate that fits every stream. Test your available upload capacity and leave room for connection variation instead of setting the encoder at the full measured upload rate.

Setting Guidance
Ingestion protocol Prefer RTMPS for a standard encoder workflow when supported. Check the endpoint, path, TLS connection on port 443, and SNI hostname.
Video codec YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS settings support H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, subject to encoder and workflow compatibility.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion.
Rate control CBR (constant bitrate).
Keyframe interval YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate YouTube’s encoder guidance covers frame rates up to 60 fps. Choose a rate your visual source and encoder can sustain.
Stereo audio sample rate YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz.
Stereo audio bitrate YouTube’s advanced settings recommend 128 kbps.

These are YouTube’s published settings recommendations, not measurements of a particular radio station. A static visual does not remove the requirement to send video. Check YouTube’s current codec-specific bitrate table rather than applying one video bitrate across different resolutions and frame rates.

Test the feed, then start the broadcast

  1. Run a representative test before going live. Use the actual type of program audio and visual expected during the broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to what the stream will contain.
  2. Check the encoder locally. Confirm the correct radio program is audible, the visual is present, and neither signal is clipping or absent.
  3. Start sending to YouTube and check stream health. In Live Control Room, review the incoming preview, health status, and messages before starting the viewer-facing broadcast.
  4. Start the broadcast when the feed is ready. Keep an eye on YouTube’s messages and the encoder during transmission so you can spot a dropped connection or missing signal.

Common connection problems and fixes

Symptom What to check Fix
YouTube shows no data or an inactive stream The selected stream, ingestion URL, and stream key or name. Confirm the encoder is sending to the currently selected YouTube stream and that the connection details are entered in the correct fields.
Connection or TLS error RTMPS endpoint and path, port 443, and SNI server hostname. Correct the endpoint details and use an encoder/network path that can establish the required TLS connection.
No audio Whether the radio signal reaches the encoder and whether the selected audio codec is supported. Trace the program audio route to the encoder, then use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
No video or a missing-video warning Whether the encoder is actually sending video rather than audio alone. Add and enable a suitable visual source, then test the outgoing audio-video feed again.
Buffering or poor stream health Upload capacity, configured bitrate, audio sample rate, keyframe interval, and YouTube health messages. Bring the bitrate within the capacity of the connection, use the recommended audio settings and keyframe timing, and retest.

Recurring programs and separate broadcasts

If you automate recurring shows, YouTube’s API distinguishes the stream carrying the feed from the broadcast event viewers watch. A stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts, and the API guide describes a continuous 24/7 feed alongside a separate broadcast. In the documented single-encoder pattern, each YouTube channel needs its own stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded programming rather than send a live microphone or camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not capture a live radio server output or go live from a camera.
