Yes, an Xbox 360 controller can work with Android—but the connection method depends on whether it is wired or wireless. A wired controller needs a data-capable USB OTG adapter or USB-C hub. An original wireless Xbox 360 controller does not pair through Bluetooth; it needs an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver connected through OTG. If reliable wireless play is your priority, a Bluetooth-capable Xbox One or Xbox Series controller is usually the simpler choice.
Identify your controller first
“Xbox 360 controller” can mean several different products. Check yours before buying an adapter.
- Wired Xbox 360 controller: has a permanently attached USB cable and needs no batteries or receiver.
- Wireless Xbox 360 controller: uses a removable battery pack or AA batteries, has no normal Bluetooth pairing button, and requires a separate Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver.
- Third-party 360-style controller: may use a different USB or wireless implementation, so compatibility is not guaranteed.
- Xbox One/Series controller: some models include Bluetooth. These are not original Xbox 360 wireless controllers and follow a different pairing process (Microsoft’s controller information).
Android supports USB and Bluetooth game controllers in general, but USB host hardware, the Android build, available power, controller drivers and the individual game all affect the result (Android USB host documentation).

For a wired controller
- Xbox 360 wired controller
- Android phone, tablet, handheld or TV device with a USB port
- For USB-C devices: a USB-C OTG/data adapter with a USB-A socket, or a USB-C hub
- For micro-USB devices: a micro-USB OTG adapter
The adapter must support USB data and host (OTG) mode. A passive charging adapter is not enough. Android says host support depends on the device’s hardware, not simply its Android version.

For a wireless controller
- Xbox 360 wireless controller with batteries or a charged battery pack
- An Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver
- A USB-C or micro-USB OTG adapter, or a USB hub
Use a receiver specifically designed for Xbox 360 wireless accessories. An Xbox One/Series wireless dongle, generic 2.4-GHz receiver or unclear third-party listing is not automatically compatible. Legacy receivers may be used or discontinued, and Android support varies by device.
Connect a wired Xbox 360 controller
- Unlock the Android device or leave the screen on.
- Plug the USB-C or micro-USB OTG adapter into the phone or tablet.
- Plug the controller’s USB cable into the adapter.
- Wait a few seconds. The Guide light may illuminate, although Android may show no notification.
- Open a game or emulator with external-controller support.
- Open its input settings and test or map the sticks, triggers, D-pad, bumpers, Start and Back buttons.
Some Android versions expose a controller menu under Settings > System > Game controllers; others place connected accessories under Settings > Connected devices. Menu names vary by manufacturer. A controller can be electrically detected without being supported by a particular game.
Connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller
An original wireless 360 controller does not use Bluetooth. Its wireless system requires the dedicated receiver documented by the Linux/Android controller driver (xpad documentation).
- Insert batteries or a charged battery pack into the controller.
- Connect the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to the Android device through an OTG adapter or USB hub.
- Press the receiver’s connect button, if it has one.
- Press the small connect button on the controller, normally near the shoulder buttons.
- Wait for the receiver and controller lights to synchronize.
- Open a controller-compatible game or emulator and map every control.
Receiver support is not universal. Android may power the receiver yet fail to expose it as a usable gamepad because the device’s kernel or software lacks the required support. The underlying driver treats wired and wireless 360 devices as different protocols (xpad source).

Why it will not appear in Bluetooth settings
Do not open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device expecting an original Xbox 360 wireless controller to appear. The Guide button powers the controller; it does not add Bluetooth. Android’s Bluetooth instructions apply to controllers that actually implement Bluetooth (Google’s Android help).
Do not mistake a Play & Charge cable for a wired connection
The Xbox 360 Play & Charge cable charges the battery pack in a wireless controller. It does not turn that controller into a standard wired USB gamepad. Android still needs the wireless receiver.
Test the connection at three levels
Android
- Reconnect the adapter and check for any USB or controller response.
- Look for
Settings > System > Game controllersor a connected-device entry where available. - Test the OTG adapter with a USB keyboard, mouse or flash drive.
Game or emulator
- Open the app’s controller or input menu.
- Map controls manually if automatic mapping is incomplete.
- Test both analog sticks through their full range, both triggers, D-pad, bumpers, Start and Back.
Hardware
If possible, test the controller on a known-compatible PC or Xbox 360. Test another controller with the same phone. Android’s standard game-controller definitions cover common buttons and axes, but apps decide how to interpret them (Android compatibility definitions).

Troubleshooting
Android does nothing with the wired controller
- Disconnect and reconnect the adapter.
- Reboot the phone.
- Verify that the adapter is OTG/data-capable, not charging-only.
- Try another OTG adapter.
- Try a powered USB-C hub if the phone cannot supply enough power.
- Test the controller on a PC or Xbox 360.
- Check the phone manufacturer’s specifications for USB OTG or USB host mode.
The controller works in Android but not in one game
The game may not support external controllers, may use an incomplete profile or may require manual mapping. Enable gamepad support, remap the controls, and test another game or emulator to separate an app problem from a phone or controller problem.

Only some buttons work
Triggers may appear as analog axes rather than buttons, and some apps handle the D-pad or Guide button differently. Map triggers as axes when the app allows it and test both sticks across their full range. Partial input does not automatically mean the controller is defective.
The receiver lights up but will not pair
- Confirm it is an Xbox 360 receiver, not an Xbox One/Series dongle.
- Try the receiver on a Windows PC to verify that it functions.
- Press the receiver’s connect button, then the controller’s connect button.
- Replace weak batteries and remove other USB devices.
- Try a powered hub or another Android device, such as an Android TV or gaming handheld.
If it works on Windows but not Android, the likely problem is Android driver compatibility rather than a dead controller.
The phone disconnects or reports insufficient power
Use a powered OTG hub, disconnect other USB accessories and use a short, good-quality adapter. A charging indicator does not guarantee enough sustained power for reliable controller input.

Vibration does not work
Rumble is optional. Buttons and sticks can work while vibration fails because Android, the device kernel, the driver and the game must all support it.

Which method should you choose?

If you already own a wired 360 controller, an OTG adapter is the sensible first purchase. If you own a wireless 360 controller and receiver, trying OTG may work, but do not assume success. If you want dependable wireless Android gaming, a Bluetooth-capable Xbox controller or Android gamepad is usually a better investment than troubleshooting legacy receiver hardware.

Can I connect an Xbox 360 controller without OTG?
Not to a typical USB-C or micro-USB Android phone. The device needs USB host mode, normally provided by an OTG adapter or USB hub. A compatible Android TV or handheld with a full-size USB host port may not need a separate adapter.
Can I pair an original Xbox 360 controller through Bluetooth?

Will an Xbox 360 controller work with Android emulators?
Often, yes, when Android recognizes it and the emulator supports external gamepads. You may need to map buttons, triggers and analog sticks manually.
Can I connect two Xbox 360 controllers?
Possibly, but it depends on the Android device, receiver or USB hub, available power and the game’s multiplayer support. Use a powered hub when connecting several wired devices and test the exact setup.
