The easiest way to connect an Xbox controller to a Steam Deck is through Bluetooth: open Steam > Settings > Bluetooth, put the controller into pairing mode, and select it from the Deck’s device list. If the controller does not support Bluetooth—or pairing fails—connect it with a USB data cable instead.
Most Xbox Series X|S controllers, newer Xbox One controllers, and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 support Bluetooth. Xbox 360 controllers and some original Xbox One models require a wired connection or a separately verified receiver.
The quickest method: pair the Xbox controller by Bluetooth
- Wake the Steam Deck and enter Game Mode.
- Press the Steam button.
- Open Settings, then select Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is disabled.
- Turn on the Xbox controller by pressing its Xbox button.
- Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo starts flashing rapidly.
- On the Steam Deck, select Xbox Wireless Controller from the available devices.
- Wait for the status to change to connected.
Press a few buttons and move both sticks to confirm that Steam sees the controller. Menu names can change slightly between SteamOS builds, but the Bluetooth pairing path remains under the Deck’s Settings menu.

The controller is paired with the Steam Deck—not directly with the television. This makes Bluetooth especially useful for docked play, because you can sit away from the Deck and TV without running a cable across the room.

Which Xbox controllers work over Bluetooth?
“Xbox controller” covers several generations with different wireless hardware. Use this table as a guide, but check the exact model if you are unsure.

Xbox One controllers with the newer unified plastic around the Xbox button are often Bluetooth models, but appearance is not a definitive test. The safest approach is to check the model’s specifications or try USB if the controller does not appear in the Deck’s Bluetooth list.

How to connect an Xbox controller with USB
Connect directly to the Steam Deck
- Use a known USB data cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Connect the controller to the Deck’s USB-C port. Use the controller’s correct connector; most newer models use USB-C, while older or third-party controllers may use another connector.
- Wait a moment for SteamOS to detect the controller.
- Open a controller-compatible game and test the buttons and sticks.
A wired controller normally requires no Bluetooth pairing. USB is the best fallback for controllers without Bluetooth and is often the fastest way to diagnose a wireless connection problem.

Connect through a dock or USB-C hub
Plug the controller into a USB port on the dock or hub. The Steam Deck should detect it as a wired gamepad. If it does not, connect the controller directly to the Deck first. If direct USB works, the cable and controller are probably fine and the dock, hub, or its connection is the more likely cause.
For TV play, a wired controller connected to the dock is also a useful diagnostic even if you ultimately plan to use Bluetooth.
Update the controller firmware if pairing fails
Old Xbox controller firmware is a known cause of Steam Deck connection problems. Valve has documented affected older firmware and directs users to update the controller through the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC or an Xbox console. The update cannot generally be performed directly from SteamOS.
- On a Windows PC, install or open the Xbox Accessories app.
- Connect the controller to the PC with a USB data cable. Alternatively, use an Xbox console that supports controller updates.
- Allow the app to detect the controller.
- Install any available firmware update. The wording of the update control may vary.
- Wait until the update finishes before disconnecting the controller.
- On the Steam Deck, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Forget or remove the old Xbox controller entry if it is listed.
- Restart the controller and, if necessary, the Deck.
- Put the controller into pairing mode and pair it again.
Valve’s firmware warning appears in its Steam Deck client update notes, including notes published from December 2025 onward. The Xbox Accessories app is not a native SteamOS tool, so Windows or an Xbox console may be required for this repair.

Make Steam recognize and use the controller
After pairing, open Steam’s controller settings or the game’s controller configuration screen. Menu labels can vary, but you should be able to:
- Confirm that the Xbox controller is connected.
- Press buttons and move the sticks to verify input.
- Assign the controller to the intended player slot.
- Choose or edit a Steam Input layout.
Start with Steam Input’s default behavior. It is useful for custom layouts, remapping, games with incomplete controller support, desktop controls, and per-game configurations.
If a game has good native Xbox controller support, you can test native input or bypass Steam Input for that individual title if Steam Input causes a conflict. Do not change several input layers at once: external remappers, compatibility tools, and Steam Input can create duplicate buttons or incorrect mappings.
After changing controller settings, fully quit and relaunch the game. Some games detect controllers only when they start.

Troubleshooting Xbox controller connection problems
The controller does not appear in Bluetooth
- Hold the controller’s Pair button until the Xbox logo flashes rapidly. A steady logo usually means it is on but not searching.
- Make sure the model supports Bluetooth. Use USB for Xbox 360 controllers and non-Bluetooth Xbox One models.
- Turn off Bluetooth on nearby consoles, PCs, phones, and tablets so the controller does not reconnect to another device.
- Replace or recharge the batteries.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on in the Deck’s Settings.
- Forget an old controller entry and search again.
- Restart the Deck and retry with the controller close to it.
- Update the controller firmware through Xbox Accessories on Windows or an Xbox console.
- Temporarily disconnect unnecessary Bluetooth devices to reduce interference.
The controller appears but will not connect
Remove the old Bluetooth entry from Settings > Bluetooth, restart both devices, and pair again. If the problem returns, update the controller firmware before trying additional pairing attempts. A USB connection can confirm that the controller itself is working.
The controller connects but does nothing in a game
- Check that Steam still lists it as connected.
- Verify that it is assigned to the correct player.
- Open the game’s controller configuration and test Steam Input.
- If Steam Input is already enabled and buttons are duplicated, test with only one input layer active.
- Restart the game after changing the layout.
- Try another controller-compatible game. If the controller works there, the issue is probably specific to the original game or its input configuration.
The game shows PlayStation or keyboard button prompts
Button artwork and controller input are separate. A game can correctly receive input from an Xbox controller while displaying PlayStation, keyboard, or generic prompts. Steam Input may translate the controls, but it cannot force every game to display Xbox glyphs.
The controller repeatedly disconnects
Charge the controller, remove stale pairings, update its firmware, and reduce nearby Bluetooth connections. For docked play, move the Deck or controller away from obvious sources of radio interference. If reliability matters more than avoiding a cable, use USB.
The controller works directly but not through the dock
Test another USB port and another known data cable, then reconnect the dock to the Deck. If possible, compare with a direct Deck connection. This separates a controller or cable fault from a dock, hub, or power-related problem.

The controller does not reconnect after sleep
Bluetooth reconnection after sleep can depend on the controller model and SteamOS behavior. Turn the controller off and on, or press the Deck’s power button to wake it instead of assuming every Xbox controller can wake the Deck over Bluetooth.
Rumble, headset audio, or battery reporting is missing
Basic buttons, sticks, triggers, and the D-pad are the main compatibility target. Rumble, headset audio, microphone support, battery reporting, and special accessories can vary with the controller, connection method, game, Steam Input, and SteamOS support. Test USB if a feature is unavailable over Bluetooth, but do not assume that USB guarantees complete Xbox-console feature parity.
Choosing the best connection method

You generally do not need an Xbox Wireless Adapter: the Deck already has Bluetooth, and adapter compatibility and driver support on SteamOS can vary. Use Bluetooth or USB unless a specific adapter and SteamOS setup has been verified for your controller.

Can I connect an Xbox 360 controller to a Steam Deck?
A wired Xbox 360 controller can be connected by USB. Wireless Xbox 360 controllers do not use standard Bluetooth and may require legacy receiver hardware; they are not handled like Bluetooth-capable Xbox Series or newer Xbox One controllers.
Can I update Xbox controller firmware from the Steam Deck?
Do not rely on SteamOS for this. Use the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC or update through a compatible Xbox console, then remove the old Deck pairing and pair again.
Do I need to pair the controller with my TV?
No. Pair it with the Steam Deck. The TV only displays the Deck’s video output.
Can an Xbox controller wake the Steam Deck?
Do not assume it can. Wake behavior varies by controller and SteamOS support; use the Deck’s power button if the controller does not reconnect after sleep.
