To connect a compatible Xbox controller to an iPad, turn on the controller, hold its Connect button until the Xbox button flashes, then select it in Settings → Bluetooth on the iPad. You do not need the Xbox app for ordinary Bluetooth pairing.
Quick pairing steps
- On the iPad, open Settings → Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
- Press and hold the controller’s Connect button for several seconds, until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- Under the nearby Bluetooth devices list, tap the Xbox controller’s name.
- Wait for the status to change to Connected, then open a game that supports controllers.

Which Xbox controllers work with an iPad?
The controller must support Bluetooth. Apple’s current supported list includes:

Do not assume that every Xbox-branded controller works with an iPad. Older Xbox One controllers may not include Bluetooth, and Apple’s current supported list does not include Xbox 360 wireless controllers. Third-party Xbox-compatible controllers can also use different pairing procedures.

Microsoft identifies the standard Xbox Wireless Controller as compatible with iOS devices and tablets over Bluetooth. If your existing controller is unsupported or lacks Bluetooth, a standard Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller is the practical replacement; buying a more expensive model does not guarantee better support in every game.
How to check that the connection works
Seeing the controller listed as Connected confirms the Bluetooth connection, but it does not prove that every game supports it. In a compatible game, test both analog sticks, the A, B, X, and Y buttons, triggers, bumpers, and the in-game menu controls.

There are three separate levels of support:
- Bluetooth connection: The iPad recognizes the controller.
- Game compatibility: The individual app accepts controller input.
- Feature compatibility: Functions such as vibration, headset audio, lights, special buttons, and remapping work as expected.
Apple notes that button and feature support varies by controller and app. If one game ignores the controller, check that game’s settings and test another known controller-compatible title before assuming the controller is faulty.

If the Xbox controller does not appear
- Confirm that the controller is powered on and has a charge or fresh AA batteries.
- Hold the Connect button long enough to enter pairing mode; the Xbox button should flash.
- Move the controller close to the iPad.
- Disconnect it from an Xbox console, PC, phone, or other tablet. A controller already connected elsewhere may not appear to the iPad.
- Turn iPad Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on.
- Restart both the iPad and controller, then try pairing again.
- Verify that the controller is a Bluetooth-capable model.
- Install available iPadOS updates and update the controller firmware using Microsoft’s supported update method.
- If the controller is listed but will not connect, tap its information button in Bluetooth settings, choose to forget the device, and pair it again.
- Reduce the number of active Bluetooth accessories nearby if interference is suspected.
Apple recommends updating software, forgetting and re-pairing the controller, and reducing nearby Bluetooth connections when controller pairing fails. See its wireless game controller troubleshooting guidance.

If it connects but does not work in a game
Pairing alone does not make an app controller-compatible. Check the following:
- Look for a controller or input option in the game’s settings.
- Update the game from the App Store.
- Close and reopen the game after pairing the controller.
- Try another game that explicitly supports external controllers.
- Check whether only one button, feature, or accessory is affected.
For Xbox Cloud Gaming or Xbox Remote Play, the relevant service must support controller input as well as the iPad recognizing the controller. Streaming-service requirements are separate from basic Bluetooth pairing.

Reconnect or disconnect the controller
To disconnect temporarily, turn off the controller or disconnect it from the iPad’s Bluetooth settings. To reconnect, turn it on and select it again under Settings → Bluetooth if it does not reconnect automatically.

Switching behavior depends on the controller model and firmware. Microsoft has described cross-device connectivity and firmware behavior in its Xbox firmware update information; do not assume that every controller automatically switches hosts.

Customize Xbox controller buttons on iPad
On supported configurations, open:
Settings → General → Game Controller → [your controller] → Default Controls
Apple documents these controller customization features for iPadOS 16 or later. You may be able to change default controls or create controls for a particular game. The menu is not guaranteed to appear for every controller or software configuration, and iPadOS remapping does not necessarily override a game’s own input behavior.
Can you connect an Xbox controller with a cable?
A compatible wired controller can connect to an iPad, but the setup depends on the iPad’s port, the controller, and the cable. USB-C iPads may need a compatible data-and-charging cable or adapter; Lightning iPads may require a Lightning adapter. A charging-only cable will not carry controller data.
Wired play can avoid Bluetooth pairing problems, but it introduces cable and adapter compatibility issues. For most supported Xbox controllers, Bluetooth is the simpler option. Apple’s iPad controller documentation explains the model-dependent wired requirements.
Common questions before buying anything
If you already own a supported Bluetooth Xbox controller, you generally do not need an adapter, the Xbox app, an Xbox console, or a subscription just to pair it with an iPad. First verify the controller model, update its firmware, and confirm that the game supports external controllers. Only consider replacing the controller if the existing model is not Bluetooth-capable or is absent from Apple’s supported list.
