Yes—an Xbox One controller can connect to Apple TV if that specific controller supports Bluetooth. Apple lists the Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth (Model 1708) and several newer Xbox controllers as supported; “Xbox One controller” by itself is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Which Xbox controllers work with Apple TV?
Apple’s supported-controller list includes these Xbox models:
- Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth, Model 1708
- Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox Series S
- Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox Series X
- Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
- Xbox Adaptive Controller
Older or unidentified Xbox One controllers may not support Bluetooth, and Apple does not list every controller sold for the original Xbox One. Check the model information or its manufacturer documentation rather than relying on its color, retail name, or the fact that it came with an Xbox One. A controller that connects to a console using Xbox Wireless is not necessarily Bluetooth-capable.

Before you pair
- Confirm that your controller is a Bluetooth-capable model.
- Make sure it has working batteries or is charged.
- If it is connected to an Xbox or another device, disconnect it there before pairing with Apple TV.
- Keep the controller near Apple TV while pairing. If Apple TV later requests a controller firmware update, follow Microsoft’s update instructions as Apple advises.
Pair the controller in Apple TV settings
- Turn on the controller by pressing the Xbox button.
- Press and hold the controller’s Connect button until the controller enters pairing mode, then release it.
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.
- Choose the Xbox controller when it appears in the nearby-device list. Enter a PIN only if Apple TV asks for one.
- Open a game that supports controllers and test the controls.
Apple documents this Bluetooth route in its Apple TV Bluetooth instructions. The exact indicator behavior can vary by controller revision, so use the model’s documentation if you are unsure whether it entered pairing mode.

Use the Game Controllers shortcut on Apple TV 4K
On Apple TV 4K, you can also hold the TV button on the Apple TV remote to open Control Center, select Game Controllers, and choose the controller. The shortcut’s availability can vary by Apple TV hardware and tvOS version; the Bluetooth settings path above is the general route. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K connection guide.
Check that the game supports a controller
Pairing establishes a Bluetooth connection; it does not guarantee that every game or app accepts controller input. Test the controller in a game designed for tvOS with controller support, and check that game’s own settings if buttons behave unexpectedly. Media or streaming apps may not use game-controller input.

Where available, Apple TV lets you customize controls for supported controllers and apps. Apple documents controller customization for tvOS 16 or later; available features can depend on the Apple TV model, software, app, and region. - Recheck Bluetooth support. Confirm the exact model. If it is an older or unidentified Xbox One controller, do not assume it can pair with Apple TV.
- Restart pairing mode. Turn on the controller and hold its Connect button again.
- Check power and distance. Ensure the controller has working power and move it closer to Apple TV.
- Reduce interference. Temporarily disconnect unneeded Bluetooth accessories or move other sources of wireless interference away.
- Update software. Check for Apple TV software updates and, if prompted, follow Microsoft’s instructions to update the controller firmware.
- Clear an old pairing. In Apple TV’s Bluetooth settings, select the controller and choose Forget This Device, then try pairing again.
- Restart Apple TV. Retry pairing after it starts up.
- Isolate the problem. Try the controller with another Bluetooth-capable device to help determine whether the issue is with the controller or Apple TV.

If the controller appears but will not connect
The controller may still be connected to an Xbox or another previously paired device, or Apple TV may have an outdated pairing record. Disconnect the controller from the other device, select it in Apple TV’s Bluetooth settings and choose Forget This Device, then put it back in pairing mode and try again. If Apple TV says the controller needs a firmware update, use Microsoft’s update instructions; Apple provides that direction in its Xbox controller guidance.

Apple says Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD support up to four Bluetooth game controllers at once. If Apple TV is also using a Bluetooth audio accessory, the limit is one controller. These limits are documented in Apple’s controller support information.

Disconnect or remove the controller
To disconnect temporarily, open the controller’s entry in Apple TV Bluetooth settings and choose Disconnect Device. It stays paired and can reconnect later. To remove the pairing, choose Forget This Device; you will need to pair it again to use it with Apple TV. Menu labels and feature availability can vary with Apple TV hardware and tvOS. Is USB a wired alternative?
Bluetooth is the standard connection method Apple describes for Apple TV. Apple notes that some controllers can pair when plugged into an Apple device with a USB cable that supports data and charging, but that does not establish wired Xbox controller support on Apple TV. Do not assume that plugging the controller into Apple TV will work as a fallback.
Do you need another controller?
If your current Xbox controller is on Apple’s supported list, try it before buying anything. If it is not Bluetooth-capable, a compatible Xbox Wireless Controller is one option; Apple also supports selected PlayStation and MFi controllers. For specialized accessibility setups, Apple lists the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which Microsoft describes as a hub for external switches, buttons, joysticks, and other inputs. A rechargeable battery accessory can change how you power a compatible controller, but it cannot add Bluetooth to a controller that lacks it.
