Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Connect the Xbox Series X directly to the monitor’s HDMI input with the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable included with the console. Then open Settings > General > TV & display options on Xbox and select a resolution and refresh rate supported by the monitor through that specific HDMI input.
Connect the Xbox Series X to the monitor
- Turn off the monitor and Xbox before connecting them. Make sure both can reach power and the HDMI cable.
- Connect the console’s HDMI port to an HDMI input on the monitor using the included Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Xbox recommends connecting directly with the supplied cable where possible: Xbox Series X specifications and Xbox Wire’s Series X technology overview.
- Turn on the monitor and select the HDMI input you used. Then turn on the Xbox.
- On the Xbox, go to Settings > General > TV & display options. Choose a resolution and refresh rate from the modes available for the connected display. Xbox’s display-settings guidance is available at Xbox Support: TV resolutions.
Choose a resolution and refresh rate the HDMI input supports
Xbox Series X has one HDMI 2.1 port and supports output up to 4K and up to 120 FPS. Xbox specifies that 4K at up to 120 FPS requires supported content and a capable display; those console specifications do not mean every game or monitor can use that mode.
Check the monitor manual’s input-by-input mode table. A display’s advertised maximum refresh rate may apply only at a particular resolution, through a particular HDMI port, or through DisplayPort instead. Xbox Wire notes that while Series X can display 4K over HDMI, its most advanced features require HDMI 2.1, and some monitors offer their desired resolution and refresh rate only through DisplayPort: Xbox Wire’s Series X technology overview.
The console, cable, monitor input, and game or other content all need to support the mode you want. An HDMI 2.1 cable by itself cannot make a monitor or its HDMI input support 4K at 120 Hz. If the mode you want is not listed in Xbox’s display options, check the monitor’s specifications for the exact input in use and select a mode that it supports.

If there is no picture
- Confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Connect the Xbox directly to the monitor while troubleshooting, rather than routing the signal through another device.
If those checks do not restore the picture, consult the monitor manual and Xbox Support’s blank-screen troubleshooting page for guidance. The steps above are basic connection checks, not a substitute for model-specific instructions.
Check audio separately
An HDMI connection does not guarantee that every monitor will play sound. Check whether the monitor has built-in speakers or an audio output, then choose an audio route supported by the monitor and the rest of your Xbox setup.

What to check when choosing a monitor
- The resolution and refresh rate it supports through HDMI at the same time.
- Which HDMI input supports those modes, and whether the needed HDMI features are available on that input.
- Whether the monitor has speakers or audio outputs if you want sound from the display.
Use the manual for the specific monitor model to verify these details; a headline refresh-rate figure alone does not establish what the Xbox can use over HDMI.
