MediaPackage is an AWS origin and packaging service: an upstream encoder sends it a feed, and it serves packaged output to playback clients. YouTube’s HLS ingest endpoint instead expects an encoder to push playlists and media segments to YouTube. For an AWS publishing workflow, configure AWS Elemental MediaLive to send HLS output to YouTube; use MediaPackage separately if you also need AWS-originated playback.
Which AWS component sends the stream to YouTube?
The roles are different. MediaPackage v2 receives live HLS or CMAF input from an upstream encoder and creates configured playback outputs. Its endpoints are for downstream devices requesting playback over HTTPS—not, in the documented flow, destinations to which YouTube pulls a live feed. See AWS’s MediaPackage live processing flow and supported inputs and outputs.
YouTube HLS ingest is a push workflow: an encoder sends media playlists and segments to YouTube using HTTPS PUT or POST. AWS’s published YouTube route uses a MediaLive HLS output group pointed at YouTube’s HLS ingest URL. The official sources cited here do not document MediaPackage itself pushing to YouTube or YouTube pulling directly from a MediaPackage endpoint.
Choose the workflow that matches your destination
| Goal | Workflow | What each service does |
|---|---|---|
| Publish a live feed on YouTube | Encoder, such as MediaLive, pushes to YouTube | The encoder produces YouTube-compatible HLS output; YouTube receives it at the endpoint generated for your stream. |
| Serve playback from AWS | Encoder sends input to MediaPackage; viewers request a MediaPackage endpoint | MediaPackage packages and serves playback formats, such as HLS or DASH, according to its configuration. |
| Publish to YouTube and provide AWS playback | Configure both destination paths, with an encoder or other verified component supplying each required output | YouTube ingest and MediaPackage playback are separate jobs. Don’t assume a MediaPackage endpoint forwards its feed to YouTube. |
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS architecture likewise distinguishes MediaLive transcoding, MediaPackage packaging, and CloudFront delivery from MediaPackage endpoints.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Send an AWS MediaLive stream to YouTube over HLS
- Create or select a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, select HLS as the stream protocol if you intend to use HLS ingest. Copy the HTTPS stream URL YouTube generates and, if shown, its optional backup URL. The endpoint is stream-specific; don’t reuse an example URL or expose your private stream key. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. The LiveStreams API also exposes primary and backup ingestion addresses.
- Configure an HLS output group in MediaLive. Set the destination to YouTube’s generated HLS URL, including the stream key in the destination format required by the current MediaLive interface. AWS’s MediaLive-to-YouTube example uses HLS Basic PUT and a two-second segment length. That post, dated 14 April 2021, is a 4K HDR example—not a universal preset—so verify current console labels and your stream’s requirements.
- Make the output conform to YouTube’s current HLS requirements. Check the codec, container, playlist, segment, and transport settings below before starting the channel.
- Start the MediaLive channel and monitor YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the stream preview appears before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast. If you use a backup endpoint, configure it only for the intended backup output and keep its credentials private.
Match YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements
YouTube’s HLS ingest guide and current HLS setup help specify the following constraints. Check the stream-specific options in Live Control Room because available settings can depend on the stream you create.
- Transport: send playlists and segments over HTTPS using HTTP PUT or POST.
- Segments and container: use TS segments with muxed M2TS audio and video. Segment duration must be between one and four seconds.
- Playlist: use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Byte-range delivery is not supported.
- Video: use H.264 or HEVC, with a closed GOP. YouTube’s guide supports up to 60 fps. HDR has additional HEVC and color requirements; don’t assume an ordinary H.264 configuration is an HDR configuration.
- Audio: use AAC in a single audio track.
YouTube’s help guidance says HLS has higher latency than RTMP, and ultra-low latency is off when HLS is selected. If minimizing latency is more important than using HLS, compare YouTube’s currently available ingest protocols in Live Control Room before designing around HLS.

Where MediaPackage fits when YouTube is also a destination
MediaPackage v2 accepts HLS and CMAF input over HTTPS; AWS documents a channel policy requirement for sources outside the AWS account, and incoming media segments must not be encrypted. It can provide configured playback endpoints, including HLS and DASH options, subject to the supported formats and codec constraints in the MediaPackage documentation.
If your service needs both YouTube and AWS playback, plan for both outputs at the encoder or use another explicitly configured, verified component to produce the required path. MediaPackage’s documented role is packaging and serving playback. It should not be treated as the YouTube publisher merely because it has an HLS endpoint.

Troubleshoot a YouTube HLS connection
- YouTube receives no feed: verify the protocol selected for the YouTube stream, the generated HTTPS URL, the stream key, and the MediaLive destination configuration. Confirm that the key and endpoint belong to the same stream.
- MediaLive starts but YouTube rejects the output: check that delivery uses HTTPS PUT or POST, that segments are TS/M2TS with muxed audio and video, and that the playlist rolls with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Playback is missing or unstable: inspect segment duration (one to four seconds), byte-range settings (unsupported), closed GOP, and the configured codecs. YouTube requires H.264 or HEVC video and single-track AAC audio for HLS ingest.
- Latency is higher than expected: HLS has higher latency than RTMP in YouTube’s help guidance; HLS selection also turns off ultra-low-latency mode.
- AWS playback works but YouTube does not: a working MediaPackage playback endpoint only demonstrates the AWS playback path. Check that an encoder is separately pushing a YouTube-compatible output to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Console instructions don’t match: the AWS blog’s MediaLive procedure is a 2021 example. Use current AWS console labels and current YouTube stream settings rather than assuming every detail in that example is unchanged.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel rather than publish a live encoder feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
