You can link Discord to both PS4 and PS5, but only PS5 supports joining Discord voice chats from the console. On PS4, linking shares PlayStation activity; use Discord on a phone, tablet, or computer for voice chat. PS5 owners can join a Discord channel or call from the console, or transfer an existing chat to it.
PS4 vs. PS5: What Discord features work?

Account linking does not add Discord voice chat to PS4. Discord describes voice transfer as a PS5 feature; PS4 activity sharing is separate. Discord’s PlayStation Network FAQ explains the distinction.
What you need
- A Discord account and a PlayStation Network account.
- Discord on a supported device or the web to link accounts. PS5 owners can also link from the console.
- For console voice chat, a PS5 with the latest available system software.
- A microphone or headset if you want to speak. You can use the PS5 controller’s built-in microphone or a compatible headset.
PlayStation Plus is not required for Discord linking or its integration. Feature availability depends on PlayStation and Discord services being available in your region. A game may have separate online-play requirements.

From Discord
- Open Discord on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, or the web.
- Open User Settings, then select Connections.
- Select Add and choose the PlayStation logo.
- Sign in with the PlayStation Network sign-in ID and password for the account you want to connect.
- Authorize the connection.
These labels reflect the current English interface; wording can vary by app version. See PlayStation’s account-linking instructions if the screens differ.

From PS5
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Game Base, then open the Discord tab.
- Select Link Account and follow the prompts to sign in and authorize.
Linking can let Discord show your PlayStation online ID and game activity, including what you are playing and how long, depending on your visibility settings. Turn on only the activity-display options you want in Discord’s PlayStation connection settings.
Join Discord voice chat directly on PS5
Join a server voice channel
- Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Game Base, then the Discord tab.
- Choose a server and then its voice channel.
- Select Join.
A server with an active voice channel may show participant avatars beside its name.
Start or join a direct voice chat
- Open Control Center > Game Base > Discord.
- Select Direct Voice Chats.
- Choose a person or group. Select Start Voice Chat to begin a new call, or Join if one is already active.

Transfer a Discord call from your phone or computer
From the Discord mobile app
- Join the voice channel, direct call, or group call in Discord.
- Open the voice-chat controls and select Join on PlayStation. Depending on the app version, you may see Transfer Voice.
- Select the PS5 associated with your linked PlayStation Network account and confirm.
- When the PS5 notifies you that the chat is connected, select View Discord Voice Chat to open its voice-chat card.
From Discord desktop or browser
- Join the voice channel.
- Open the channel options (often the ellipsis) or right-click the channel.
- Select Transfer Voice to PlayStation, choose the linked PS5, and confirm.
The option wording and location can vary by app version. Both methods transfer the voice conversation to PS5; they do not create a PlayStation party.
What to expect from PS5 audio and chat controls
Once connected, Discord appears as a voice-chat card in the PS5 Control Center. Open the card to see and adjust the available chat controls. Check that the controller microphone or headset microphone is not muted, and select the intended input device in PS5 audio settings if needed. Game and chat balance options can depend on the connected audio device and system software.
Discord voice chat is separate from PlayStation party voice chat, and PS5 does not let you use both at once. Discord does not bring PlayStation party features such as Share Screen or Share Play into its voice chat. If you hear echo or duplicate voices, check whether you are also using a game’s in-game voice chat and choose the communication setup that works for your group.

What Discord does on PS4
On PS4, linking accounts can share your PlayStation presence and gaming activity with Discord friends when the relevant visibility options are enabled. It does not let you join a Discord voice channel through the PS4 interface or transfer a Discord call to the console. Keep the voice chat on a phone, tablet, or computer while you play, use a game’s own cross-platform chat if available, or use PlayStation party chat with PlayStation players. Unofficial audio-routing setups require extra equipment and are not equivalent to native Discord support.
Troubleshooting Discord on PS5
The Discord tab is missing
- Confirm you are on PS5; PS4 does not have the console Discord voice-chat tab.
- Install the latest available PS5 system software.
- Check that the PS5 is signed into the intended PSN account and that it is linked to the Discord account you use.
- If the account was linked before voice chat was supported, unlink and relink it to refresh permissions.
- Restart the PS5 and Discord app, then check whether the feature is available where you live.
“Join on PlayStation” or the transfer option is missing
Make sure you are using PS5, not PS4, and that the Discord and PSN accounts are the matching linked accounts. Update the console. If the connection is old or only shows activity, open Discord > User Settings > Connections, remove the PlayStation connection, and link it again. Confirm you are in a voice chat and check the channel or call options; labels and placement can differ between mobile, desktop, and browser versions.
Friends see your game, but voice chat will not connect
Activity sharing works on both consoles; voice transfer requires PS5 and the required voice-chat permissions. Verify the console software and account link, then relink if necessary. If the connection still fails, follow PlayStation’s Discord voice-chat troubleshooting guidance.

Your microphone does not work
- Check the controller’s mute status and any physical mute switch on the headset.
- Confirm the correct input device in PS5 audio settings.
- Check mute status in the Discord voice-chat card.
- Test the microphone in another supported chat or test environment.
Use a wired headset, a PlayStation-compatible wireless headset, or the controller microphone unless you have verified another headset’s compatibility. Do not assume every Bluetooth headset connects directly to PS5.
You cannot join Discord and a PlayStation party
That is an expected limitation, not necessarily a fault: PS5 cannot use Discord voice chat and PlayStation party voice chat simultaneously. Choose one.

Depending on your settings, linking can expose your PlayStation online ID and game activity, including the game you are playing and play duration. In Discord, open User Settings > Connections and turn off the PlayStation activity display options you do not want. Your PlayStation online status and hidden-game settings can also affect what Discord shows. Review both services’ privacy settings if you want to keep activity private.

Using a PS5 in Rest Mode
You can wake a PS5 from Rest Mode when the network-wake option is enabled. On the console, go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Enable Turning On PS5 from Network. Then use Discord’s Join on PlayStation option and select the console. The console can turn on to connect when this setting is enabled.
Do you need to buy a headset?
No. Linking accounts costs nothing, PlayStation Plus is not required for the Discord integration, and PS5’s controller microphone may be enough. Consider a headset only if you want clearer microphone audio, more comfort, or a different game-and-chat audio setup. A headset does not add native Discord voice chat to PS4.
