How to Connect LibreTime Automation to a 24/7 YouTube Radio Stream

LibreTime does not document a native YouTube output. Use an Icecast source and a separate relay/encoder, then plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit and relay recovery.

LibreTime’s documented outputs are Icecast and SHOUTcast, not a native YouTube Live destination. To carry its scheduled radio programming to YouTube, route LibreTime’s Icecast output into a separate relay or encoder, then send that encoder’s video-and-audio stream to YouTube Live. The relay is the bridge; the cited LibreTime and YouTube documentation describes the two ends, but does not provide or certify one complete integration recipe.

How the connection works

The practical signal path is:

LibreTime scheduled playout → Icecast source stream → separate relay/encoder → YouTube Live

LibreTime supplies the radio audio. The relay reads that audio, packages or encodes it for YouTube, and provides video if the YouTube presentation needs a visual. YouTube receives the result through an encoder using the stream URL and stream key from its Live Control Room. The relay may run on the LibreTime host, on a separate always-on server, or on hosted compute; the choice affects isolation, network reliability, maintenance, restart supervision, and cost.

This is an architecture assembled from the documented input and output capabilities, not a built-in LibreTime-to-YouTube feature. The exact relay software, configuration, and supported versions depend on what you choose, so verify its documentation before deploying it.

Prepare LibreTime’s Icecast output

  1. Configure an Icecast output in LibreTime. Record the source host, port, mount, audio format, and credentials. LibreTime’s configuration reference describes up to three Icecast outputs and lists AAC, MP3, Ogg, and Opus among supported formats.
  2. Check the Icecast source limit. If more than two Icecast outputs use the same Icecast server, LibreTime’s documentation says to raise Icecast’s source limit. Make this adjustment on the server that actually hosts Icecast.
  3. Confirm the stream is reachable from the relay. The relay needs network access to the Icecast host and the correct mount and credentials. If the relay runs on another machine, check firewall rules and whether the Icecast address is reachable from that machine; do not expose source credentials publicly.
  4. Choose a compatible audio path. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio. If LibreTime’s chosen output format does not fit the encoder’s input or output requirements, configure the relay to transcode or package the audio appropriately. Account for the relay’s extra processing load and the effect of encoding choices on audio quality.

Build and configure the relay

The relay is the point where the two systems meet. It must read the LibreTime/Icecast audio continuously, deliver audio in a format accepted by the YouTube encoder workflow, and provide a video signal if your chosen presentation requires one. The documentation cited here does not specify an official bridge, a relay product, or a tested command line, so do not treat a community configuration as a supported LibreTime integration.

Choose where it runs

  • On the LibreTime host: fewer machines to maintain, but relay work shares resources and failure conditions with the radio automation host.
  • On a separate always-on server: isolates the relay from LibreTime, but adds another system to secure, monitor, and restart.
  • On hosted compute: can provide a separate operating environment, but introduces recurring cost and still requires network access to the Icecast source.

Whichever location you use, make sure the relay starts after a reboot, restarts after a process failure, and can reconnect after an Icecast interruption. These are operational requirements for the separate relay; LibreTime’s own playout or Icecast fallback behavior does not automatically restore the YouTube connection.

Set encoder output for YouTube

  • Ingest protocol: prefer RTMPS, which YouTube recommends as the secure extension of RTMP.
  • Audio: use AAC or MP3 for the documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder workflow.
  • Bitrate: choose a bitrate appropriate to your audio and any video you send, following YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the relay’s capabilities. Ensure the upstream connection has enough sustained capacity for the selected output.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Video: if using a static image or visual loop, confirm that the relay actually produces a valid video stream; an audio-only Icecast source is not itself a YouTube video signal.

Check the encoder software’s documentation for the exact field names and syntax. The available sources do not establish a particular relay’s UI, command, or bitrate preset.

Connect the encoder in YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Check channel eligibility before scheduling the launch. YouTube’s help says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
  2. Create or select a live stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the relay/encoder. Treat the key as a credential: keep it private and do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
  3. Start the relay and inspect the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives both the expected audio and any intended video. Use YouTube’s stream-health information and listen to the preview for gaps, silence, distortion, or unexpected program changes.
  4. For a scheduled event, use the Live Control Room’s Go live control when the preview is ready. Entering a stream key into an encoder does not by itself mean a scheduled event has been started in YouTube.

Plan for 24/7 operation, archives, and rights

Do not rely on one continuous broadcast for a complete replay

YouTube’s archive guidance says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all; its encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, so a complete replay is not assured. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, keep an independent local recording and decide deliberately whether to end and split broadcasts; verify the current YouTube workflow before relying on a particular split procedure.

Monitor both sides of the relay

LibreTime can use scheduled playout when show-source or master-source live input is absent, and Icecast fallback mounts can help move listeners between sources. Those features concern the radio stream chain, not the separate relay-to-YouTube connection. Monitor the Icecast source and YouTube output independently, and test what happens when either the source or relay process stops. Keep a local recording if you need an archive independent of YouTube.

Clear the content for a continuous public stream

Before putting a 24/7 channel on air, confirm that you have the necessary rights to broadcast every recording, track, and visual in the rotation on YouTube. A schedule being automated or a stream being continuous does not establish permission. Check current YouTube rules for livestreaming and any separate monetization requirements that apply to your channel; do not assume that having permission to play a recording automatically makes it eligible for monetization.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube shows no incoming stream Relay connection, YouTube server URL or stream key, or network access Confirm the encoder is running, the URL and key belong to the selected YouTube stream, and the relay can reach both the Icecast mount and YouTube ingestion endpoint. Keep the key private while checking configuration.
Relay cannot read LibreTime audio Icecast host, port, mount, credentials, or source limit Recheck the values recorded from LibreTime’s Icecast output and confirm the source is active. If more than two outputs share the Icecast server, check its configured source limit.
Video arrives but audio is missing or rejected Audio format or relay packaging Check that the relay is sending AAC or MP3 audio for the RTMP/RTMPS workflow and that it is connected to the intended Icecast source.
Audio works but YouTube has no usable video Relay video output Remember that Icecast audio alone is not a video signal. Confirm the selected relay supplies a valid video stream if the presentation requires one.
Stream drops when the source or server restarts Reconnect and restart behavior Test recovery by restarting the Icecast source and relay separately. Configure process supervision and reconnection behavior in the chosen relay, then verify that YouTube receives the stream again.
Audio or video quality is unstable Encoder settings, upstream capacity, or source stability Check YouTube’s stream-health information, confirm sustained upstream bandwidth for the selected output, and use the recommended two-second keyframe interval without exceeding four seconds.
No full replay appears after an all-day broadcast YouTube’s long-stream archive limit A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep an independent recording and review the current YouTube controls before planning shorter broadcast segments.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings around the clock rather than relay LibreTime’s live schedule, StreamNeo is an alternative to the self-hosted relay: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not ingest LibreTime or Icecast, and it does not stream from a camera.
