Yes. A PS4, PS4 Slim, or PS4 Pro can use an iPhone or Android phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot like a wireless router. Turn on the hotspot, then on the console go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi > Easy, select the phone’s network, enter its password, and test the connection. This gives the PS4 internet access; it is not the same as using PS Remote Play to stream your console to a phone.
What you need before connecting
- A PS4 with working Wi-Fi.
- An iPhone or Android phone with cellular service and a hotspot feature.
- A cellular plan that permits tethering. Some carriers restrict hotspot use or charge extra, so check your plan’s terms; availability varies by carrier and location. Google’s Android hotspot guidance also notes that carrier limits may apply.
- The hotspot’s network name and password.
- A usable cellular signal and enough hotspot data for what you plan to do. Game downloads, updates, and streaming can consume substantial data; usage depends on the content and activity.
Keep the phone near the PS4 and, for a longer session, connect it to power. A hotspot shares the phone’s cellular connection; it does not add cellular service to the console.
Turn on the phone’s hotspot
On an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Personal Hotspot. Depending on the iOS version, it may be under Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join and note the displayed Wi-Fi Password.
- If the PS4 does not detect or join the network, try turning on Maximize Compatibility. Apple says this can help compatibility but may reduce performance and Wi-Fi security, so use it as a fallback. Apple’s Personal Hotspot guidance explains the setting and carrier availability.
If discovery is unreliable, leave the Personal Hotspot screen open while connecting. The feature’s availability depends on your carrier and plan.
On an Android phone
- Open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot, or a similarly named menu such as Connections > Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Turn on the Wi-Fi hotspot and note its network name and password.
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and software version. Google documents the general hotspot path and notes that tethering can be subject to carrier restrictions. Android hotspot instructions

On a Pixel, if Wi-Fi tethering will not start, check whether Data Saver is on; Google’s Pixel guidance says it may need to be disabled. Pixel hotspot instructions If your phone offers a Wi-Fi band choice, a 2.4-GHz-compatible mode can be worth trying when the PS4 cannot find the hotspot. The exact option depends on the phone and software.
Connect the PS4 to the hotspot
- With the phone hotspot on, open Settings from the PS4 home screen.
- Select Network > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Choose Use Wi-Fi, then select Easy.
- Choose the phone’s hotspot from the detected networks.
- Enter the hotspot password exactly, then connect and allow the PS4 to save the network if prompted.
- Choose Test Internet Connection to check the result.

Read the PS4 connection test
Open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection to run the console’s built-in test. Depending on the system software and result, it can report whether the PS4 obtained an IP address, reached the internet, signed in to PlayStation Network, and what NAT type and connection speeds it detected. - Internet Connection: Successful means the console reached the internet through the hotspot.
- PlayStation Network Sign-In: Successful means it could authenticate with PSN at the time of the test. Neither result guarantees that a particular game’s servers, matchmaking, or voice chat will work.
- NAT Type 1 indicates a direct connection and is uncommon with ordinary phone hotspots. NAT Type 2 is a connection through a router or similar network and is generally practical. NAT Type 3 indicates a restricted network: basic access may work, while some multiplayer, party, voice-chat, or Remote Play features may fail.
- Connection speed is only a snapshot. Mobile signal changes and network congestion can affect real performance; latency, jitter, and packet loss matter as well as download speed.
If the hotspot does not appear in the PS4 list
- Check that cellular data works by loading a webpage on the phone, and make sure the phone is not in airplane mode.
- Confirm the hotspot is switched on. Keep its settings screen open temporarily and place the phone within a few feet of the PS4.
- Turn the hotspot off and back on. If it still does not appear, restart the phone and PS4.
- On iPhone, try Maximize Compatibility. On Android, try a 2.4-GHz-compatible hotspot mode if available; it is a device-dependent fallback, not a guaranteed fix.
- Try a simple hotspot name without unusual symbols, and check that the network is not hidden and has not reached its connected-device limit.
- Return to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection and try Set Up Manually if the network remains undiscovered.
If the PS4 rejects the password
- Display the password on the phone and re-enter it carefully; passwords are case-sensitive.
- Make sure you are entering the hotspot password, not the phone’s device name or another Wi-Fi password.
- If needed, temporarily change the hotspot password to standard letters and numbers, then turn the hotspot off and back on.
- Remove or forget the saved hotspot on the PS4, then connect again using the current password.
If Wi-Fi connects but internet access fails
A Wi-Fi connection only confirms that the PS4 joined the phone’s local hotspot. If the internet test fails, check whether the phone itself can use cellular data, whether the cellular signal is usable, and whether the carrier has blocked, capped, or slowed tethering. Also check for phone-side VPN, firewall, Private DNS, or ad-blocking settings that could interfere, too many connected devices, overheating, and cellular congestion. Restart both devices and run the PS4 test again.

Changing PS4 DNS or MTU is not a first-line fix for a phone that has no cellular connection or has exhausted its hotspot allowance. Those settings also cannot remove carrier-level NAT restrictions.
If PSN works but a game or voice chat does not
Record the NAT result from Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. NAT Type 3 can restrict some games and network features, but it does not mean all online play is impossible. A game’s server or port requirements, unstable latency, poor upload performance, packet loss, or cellular congestion can also be responsible.

- If possible, test another online game or feature to see whether the issue is specific to one service.
- Try another network or carrier hotspot as a comparison.
- Ask your carrier whether its mobile network uses restrictive NAT and whether the plan supports the traffic your game requires.
- If reliable multiplayer is important, use home broadband or another fixed connection where available.
Do not assume port forwarding will fix a mobile hotspot. It generally requires control of the upstream router, while a phone connection may sit behind carrier-grade NAT. PlayStation’s Remote Play troubleshooting specifically warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play and advises contacting the mobile carrier if restrictions are a problem. - Move the phone to a location with stronger reception, such as near a window, and keep it elevated and unobstructed.
- Plug the phone into power, but stop using the hotspot if the phone becomes too hot.
- Disconnect devices that do not need the hotspot. Pause cloud backups, video streaming, and large downloads on connected devices.
- Try again when local cellular congestion is lower. A strong speed-test result does not guarantee stable latency for gaming.
- For large downloads or competitive play, prefer a stable home connection when possible.
If the hotspot turns off after a period of inactivity, check the phone for an automatic timeout or battery-saving option and disable it if appropriate. Some Android devices automatically shut the hotspot off when no devices are connected; carrier policy, weak signal, and overheating can also contribute to disconnects. Hotspot internet is different from PS Remote Play
For ordinary hotspot use, the PS4 itself joins the phone’s Wi-Fi and uses its cellular connection for PSN, updates, downloads, and online games. No Remote Play app or special Remote Play setup is needed.
Remote Play instead streams a PS4 located elsewhere to a phone, computer, or another supported device. The PS4 must be configured for Remote Play, and NAT and network performance become more important. Sony’s current Remote Play troubleshooting guidance specifies a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps in both directions for best performance. Those figures apply to Remote Play, not as a universal minimum for every PS4 online game. A hotspot that provides ordinary PS4 internet access may still fail to support Remote Play because of restrictive NAT or inconsistent speed. Sony Remote Play troubleshooting
When a hotspot makes sense—and when it does not
A phone hotspot is useful for temporary access, travel, emergencies, or short sessions when cellular coverage is strong and the plan has suitable hotspot data. It is a less dependable choice for large updates, competitive shooters or fighting games, frequent voice chat, multiple users, or places with weak or congested service.

- Home Wi-Fi: Usually more suitable for sustained downloads and regular play, with less variable latency than a congested mobile connection.
- Ethernet from a home router: Avoids the PS4-to-router wireless link and is typically the most stable option when fixed broadband is available. PlayStation recommends LAN for a more stable connection in its setup material. PS4 Quick Start Guide
- Dedicated 4G/5G hotspot or mobile router: Can keep the phone free and may offer different placement, power, antenna, or Ethernet options. It still depends on carrier coverage, data policy, and NAT; it does not guarantee unrestricted multiplayer.
- USB tethering: A PS4 does not normally use a phone’s USB tethering as a standard USB network adapter. Wi-Fi is the straightforward hotspot method; computer or router bridging adds complexity.
- Public Wi-Fi: Captive portals, client isolation, restrictive NAT, and blocked gaming traffic can make it unpredictable compared with a personal hotspot.
