The right connection depends on what you want to do. Install the Xbox mobile app to manage your console, chat, view captures, and install games remotely. To play games installed on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S on your phone, open xbox.com/remoteplay in Safari, Chrome, or another supported mobile browser. You will also need a compatible controller for games without touch controls.
Choose the connection you need

Method 1: Connect your phone with the Xbox app
- Install the official Xbox app for iPhone. For Android, use the official Google Play listing linked from Microsoft’s Xbox mobile app page; avoid third-party APKs.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox profile.
- Make sure the console is connected to the internet and has completed its initial setup.
- Select your console in the app, or use its console-management or add-console function if it is not discovered automatically.
- Confirm that the displayed console is the one you want to manage.
Depending on the current app version and region, you can use the app for Xbox chat and parties, messages, captures, achievements, browsing, purchases, and remote game installation. App labels and menu locations can change, so follow the functions shown in your current build rather than relying on an exact menu path.
If the Xbox does not appear
Check that the phone and Xbox use the same Microsoft account, the console is online, and the app is updated. Fully close and reopen the app, then remove and re-add the console if that option is available. A restrictive guest network can interfere with discovery. The phone and Xbox do not always have to be on the same Wi-Fi network, particularly when using Remote Play over the internet.
Method 2: Play Xbox games on your phone with Remote Play
Remote Play streams a game from your own console to your phone. The game runs on the Xbox; the phone displays the video and sends back controller or touch input.

Prepare the Xbox
- On the Xbox, open Settings.
- Open the device or connection settings area, then select Remote features.
- Enable remote features and run the console test if one is offered.
- Leave the console powered on or in its supported standby mode. Microsoft may describe this as an eligible “Instant-On” mode; the exact label can vary by console software version.
Remote Play supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. Microsoft lists a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, a compatible phone, a supported controller, and an internet connection among the requirements. See the official Remote Play requirements.
Start Remote Play on the phone
- Open Safari, Chrome, or another supported mobile browser.
- Go to xbox.com/remoteplay.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the console.
- Select your Xbox and wait for the stream to begin.
- Connect a compatible controller if the game does not support touch controls.
Microsoft currently directs mobile users to the web-based Remote Play experience. Older instructions that tell you to launch Remote Play from a particular Xbox-app menu may no longer match the current app.
Phone, operating-system, and network requirements
Microsoft’s Remote Play page lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 15.1 or later for mobile devices, plus 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data and approximately 10 Mbps download speed. Its Xbox mobile guidance gives a more conservative recommendation of 20 Mbps or higher for mobile gaming, particularly cloud gaming. Neither figure guarantees a smooth stream: latency, upload performance from the home network, Wi-Fi congestion, and distance from the router also matter.

The Xbox mobile app page separately lists iOS 15.1 or later and Android 8.0 or later. Keep the phone operating system, browser, Xbox app, and console software updated. Mobile-data charges may apply.
Pair an Xbox controller with your phone
Pairing the controller to the phone is separate from connecting the phone to the Xbox. The controller communicates with the phone, while the Remote Play session communicates with the console.
- Turn on the Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Press and hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo begins flashing.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select the Xbox controller when it appears.
- Return to the Remote Play browser session.
Use a supported Bluetooth controller or a compatible wired controller accessory. Some older Xbox One controllers do not have Bluetooth. A USB-C or Lightning connection can be more reliable, provided both the phone and accessory support it.

If the controller reconnects to the Xbox, temporarily turn off the console or move out of its immediate connection range before pairing. Also check that it is not paired with another phone, tablet, or PC, that Bluetooth permissions are enabled, and that its battery is charged.

Touch controls work only in selected games. Look for Microsoft’s touch-control indicator or Play with touch support. A phone-mounted controller or clip is optional convenience equipment, not a requirement for connecting the phone.

Cloud Gaming is the better option if you do not own an Xbox or do not want to leave your console available. Microsoft says mobile Cloud Gaming availability depends on the supported region, device, plan, platform, and title. Not every Game Pass game is cloud-playable, and catalogs can change. Microsoft’s mobile guidance lists Android phones and tablets running Android 12 or later and iPhones and iPads running iOS/iPadOS 14.4 or later, subject to those other requirements.

Troubleshooting
Remote Play will not start
- Confirm that Remote features are enabled.
- Check that the Xbox is powered on or in an eligible standby mode.
- Test Remote Play at home on the same network first.
- Restart the Xbox, phone, router, and browser.
- Try 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of cellular data, or the reverse.
- Temporarily disable a VPN, aggressive ad blocker, or restrictive DNS setting.
- Check whether someone else is using the console.
- Update the console, phone, browser, and Xbox app.
- Sign out of the Microsoft account and sign back in.
- Open xbox.com/remoteplay directly instead of searching for an in-app Remote Play button.
The stream is laggy or blurry
Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi close to the router and connect the Xbox by Ethernet where possible. Stop large downloads and video streams on the home network, avoid congested public Wi-Fi, and consider a wired controller if Bluetooth interference is noticeable. Cellular performance can vary sharply with location and congestion. A high download speed alone does not ensure low latency.
The app cannot find the console
Verify the Microsoft account, internet connection, app version, and console setup. Guest networks and network restrictions can block discovery. Reopen the app and use its displayed add-console or re-add option. Local Wi-Fi can help discovery, but Remote Play itself is not limited to the same Wi-Fi network.

Put it into pairing mode again, disconnect it from other devices, check its battery, and confirm that the controller supports Bluetooth. If the browser session was already open, reconnect the controller and reopen Remote Play.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do my phone and Xbox have to use the same Wi-Fi?
No. The same network is useful for initial testing and can reduce latency, but Remote Play can work over the internet when the console, account, and network meet Microsoft’s requirements.
Can I use my phone as an Xbox controller?
The Xbox app supports console management and communication features, but it does not universally replace a physical Xbox game controller for playing games. Use Remote Play with a supported controller, or touch controls where the individual game supports them.
