Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You can control several independent YouTube streams from one human-edited manifest, but FFmpeg does not provide a universal native config file that orchestrates a fleet of separate jobs. Use a small launcher to read shared defaults and per-stream settings, then start one FFmpeg process for each independent stream. For identical video and audio sent to multiple destinations, use FFmpeg’s tee muxer instead.
What “one FFmpeg config file” can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg’s command line defines inputs, outputs, stream mappings, and options, with options applying in relation to the input or output they precede. Its documentation does not define a single built-in fleet configuration file that schedules and supervises multiple unrelated, long-running YouTube streams. A manifest in YAML or JSON is a practical application-level design: your launcher reads it, validates the entries, and constructs a command for each job. FFmpeg command-line documentation
For channels with different videos, playlists, schedules, overlays, stream keys, or encoding settings, run a separate FFmpeg process per stream. This gives each stream its own input, explicit audio/video maps, encoder options, YouTube destination, log, and restart behavior. The manifest centralizes human-edited settings; it does not replace FFmpeg’s command-line syntax or act as a supervisor by itself.
Choose between separate processes and tee
| Pattern | Use it when | Encoding and control |
|---|---|---|
| One FFmpeg process per stream | Streams have different content, timing, keys, overlays, or output settings. | Each process encodes according to its configuration and can be tuned or restarted independently. This is an architectural recommendation based on FFmpeg’s command-line model. |
| One FFmpeg process with tee | The same program and encoded feed must go to multiple destinations. | FFmpeg encodes audio and video once, then fans packets out. Destinations share the feed and core encoding settings; tee does not schedule playlists or independently control unrelated streams. |
The tee muxer cannot automatically select streams, so explicitly map the audio and video with -map. Some output formats also need format-specific options. Its output syntax includes escaping rules, so check the FFmpeg tee muxer documentation when adapting an example; do not assume a multi-destination string can be pasted unchanged into every shell or launcher.

Design a manifest and launcher
Put shared defaults and stream-specific values in one place
A maintainable manifest can hold the FFmpeg executable path, common frame rate and encoder defaults, log location, and restart policy under defaults. Give each item in streams a stable name, input or playlist, YouTube server URL, key reference, explicit maps, and any overrides.
defaults:
ffmpeg: /path/to/ffmpeg
log_directory: /path/to/logs
frame_rate: 30
video_codec: libx264
preset: veryfast
streams:
- name: game-a
input: /media/game-a.mp4
youtube_url: rtmp://example-server
key_reference: GAME_A_STREAM_KEY
maps: [0:v:0, 0:a:0]
overrides: {}
- name: game-b
input: /media/game-b.mp4
youtube_url: rtmp://example-server
key_reference: GAME_B_STREAM_KEY
maps: [0:v:0, 0:a:0]
overrides: {}
This is illustrative pseudo-YAML, not executable FFmpeg configuration or a tested deployment. The launcher—not FFmpeg—must interpret the fields and build correctly ordered command-line arguments. The example’s server value is a placeholder, not a YouTube ingest address.

Keep stream keys private
Obtain the server URL and stream key for each destination from YouTube’s encoder setup. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not commit a real key in a manifest stored in source control, include it in a public example, or expose it in logs. Store a reference in the manifest and resolve it through an environment variable or secrets store; the exact mechanism depends on your operating system and deployment. If a key is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room. YouTube encoder settings and stream keys
Make the launcher validate, log, and supervise
- Validate before launch. Check that every job has an input, destination URL, key reference, maps, and valid overrides. Fail clearly rather than silently starting a partially configured stream.
- Build one command per independent stream. Apply shared defaults, then that stream’s overrides; use explicit
-mapselections and ensure each input/output option is scoped to the intended file. - Use separate logs and process identities. Include the stable stream name in log paths and alerts so an exit or error can be tied to the correct job.
- Give a supervisor responsibility for restarts. Have the launcher report a failed process to a service manager or supervisor, and choose an intentional retry/backoff policy. No universal restart interval is prescribed; it depends on your operating system and deployment.
For a single identical feed sent to multiple destinations, a tee output is a different command-building path: explicitly map streams, configure the output targets and any required formats, and account for escaping in the tee URL. Tee is a fan-out mechanism, not a substitute for the per-stream entries and independent lifecycle needed by unrelated programs.

Set YouTube encoding and capacity deliberately
Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the chosen quality, rather than copying one setting across every kind of content. Follow the YouTube Live encoder settings for the current guidance. Test with motion and audio representative of the real stream, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the event; these are operational checks, not a guarantee that a particular machine can sustain a workload.
- Estimate the combined outgoing bitrate of all concurrently active FFmpeg processes. Ensure measured, sustained upload capacity has headroom above that total; an uplink’s advertised peak is not proof it can maintain several streams.
- Estimate encoding capacity for the actual number of concurrent transcodes and the chosen settings. The published guidance does not certify a particular computer or promise a stream count; test existing hardware under representative load before buying equipment.
- If recording locally as well as streaming, measure file growth and confirm the destination has enough free space. Continuous recording can exhaust storage even while the live output appears healthy.
- Use an unlisted or private event for setup checks where appropriate, and verify the selected input, audio, video, destination, and stream health before relying on the job unattended.
YouTube’s current Help guidance says a channel can have 10 active streams and a stream key can have 3 active streams at once; both limits apply concurrently. Those are YouTube account-side limits, not a promise that a computer, encoder, or internet connection can sustain that many jobs. YouTube live-streaming limits

Plan for restarts, monitoring, and archives
A 24/7 setup needs more than a command that starts successfully. Monitor process exits, stale output, YouTube stream health, log errors, disk space, and network interruptions. Alert on conditions that need attention, and verify that the supervisor’s restart behavior does not conceal a persistent bad key, unavailable input, or full disk.
Uninterrupted streaming and a complete automatic YouTube archive are separate requirements. YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining a complete VOD matters, plan local recording and segmentation or deliberately create event boundaries rather than assuming a continuous 24/7 event will produce one complete archive. Troubleshooting multiple FFmpeg streams
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| One stream does not start | Missing manifest field, unreadable input, invalid command construction, or unavailable destination. | Review that job’s validation output and separate log; confirm the input path, maps, and event’s server URL and key. |
| YouTube rejects a connection | Wrong event credentials, a mistyped destination, or a key that was changed or exposed. | Check the encoder details in Live Control Room; resolve the correct secret reference and reset an exposed key. |
| Several streams stutter or drop frames | Combined upload demand exceeds sustained capacity, or encoding load exceeds available compute. | Compare aggregate output demand with measured upload capacity and test CPU/GPU load under the actual concurrent workload; adjust resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Only some streams map audio or video correctly | Automatic stream selection chose an unintended track, or explicit maps refer to the wrong input streams. | Inspect each input’s streams and specify the intended audio and video maps for that job. Tee also requires explicit maps. |
| The stream runs but the expected full VOD is missing | The continuous event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold. | Use local recording/segmentation or event boundaries if a complete retained copy is required. |
| Jobs stop after running for a while | Process failure, network interruption, expired or changed credentials, source failure, or exhausted storage. | Correlate process logs with YouTube stream health and storage alerts; have the supervisor restart failures and alert on repeated exits instead of retrying silently. |
