You usually do not need to convert an MPEG-2 video just to upload it to YouTube: YouTube lists MPEG-2 among its supported formats. If you choose to convert for a more predictable upload file, use an MP4 container with H.264 video and compatible audio. An ordinary YouTube playlist is made from uploaded videos; sending a live broadcast is a separate workflow, and live HLS ingestion has different requirements.
First decide what “playlist stream” means
| What you want to do | What it involves | Recommended file or delivery path |
|---|---|---|
| Play videos from a YouTube playlist | Upload each video, then add it to a playlist. YouTube plays the uploaded videos on demand. | MPEG-2 is listed as supported, so conversion is optional. For a converted upload, YouTube recommends MP4 with H.264 video. |
| Send video to YouTube as a live broadcast | Use a live encoder and YouTube’s configured ingestion method; this is not the same as uploading playlist files. | For HLS ingestion, follow YouTube’s HLS protocol. It requires muxed audio/video in M2TS segments, with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio. |
The conversion steps below are for an ordinary video upload. Do not use the MP4 output as a substitute for the HLS segment format when configuring an HLS live stream.
Inspect the MPEG-2 file before converting
Check the file’s video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, scan type (progressive or interlaced), and color characteristics. MPEG-2 files can differ in all of these respects. If the file has multiple video or audio tracks, decide which ones you want rather than assuming the first or every track is right.
FFmpeg can report stream details with:
ffmpeg -i input.mpg
Read the stream listing in the output. The command may finish by reporting that no output file was specified; that is expected when using it only to inspect the input. FFmpeg documents stream selection with -map; actual stream indexes and encoder availability depend on the file and installed build.

Convert MPEG-2 to H.264 in an MP4 file with FFmpeg
For a straightforward upload, this command selects the first video stream, includes available audio streams, encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, and writes an MP4 file:
ffmpeg -i input.mpg -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset medium -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart output.mp4
-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a?includes audio streams if present. It can include multiple audio tracks; change the mapping if you need only one.-c:v libx264asks FFmpeg to encode H.264 using libx264. The installed FFmpeg build must include that encoder. FFmpeg also documents H.264 encoding through OpenH264 in builds that include it.-crf 18and-preset mediumare example quality and speed choices, not YouTube requirements. A lower CRF generally means a larger file at higher quality; the preset trades encoding speed against compression efficiency.-pix_fmt yuv420psets 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, which YouTube recommends for uploads.-c:a aac -b:a 192kencodes audio as AAC at the selected bitrate. This example is not a claim that 192 kbps is YouTube’s recommended stereo upload bitrate.-movflags +faststartmoves MP4 indexing information toward the start of the file, which can help playback begin before the whole file is downloaded.
Replace input.mpg and output.mp4 with your actual filenames. Use a different output name so the original stays intact. Before relying on the command, check that your FFmpeg build has the requested encoder and that the selected streams match your file.

Keep the recorded frame rate
Use the source recording’s frame rate rather than changing it just to match a guessed YouTube preset. YouTube’s upload guidance says content should be encoded and uploaded at the rate at which it was recorded. Avoid adding an output frame-rate option unless you have a deliberate reason to change it.
Deinterlace only if the source is interlaced
YouTube recommends deinterlacing interlaced footage before upload. First establish whether the source is interlaced and identify its field order; then choose a deinterlacing filter appropriate to that material. Do not apply a deinterlacing filter blindly to progressive video, or assume that every MPEG-2 file has the same field order. The example command above does not deinterlace.

Choose bitrate-based encoding only when you need it
The sample command uses quality-based CRF encoding, so it does not set a target video bitrate. If your workflow instead requires a target bitrate, YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for SDR 1080p at standard frame rates and 12 Mbps for SDR 1080p at high frame rates. These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or universal settings. Use the recommendation for the output resolution and frame-rate category, and account for the source quality.
Check the output against YouTube’s upload guidance
YouTube recommends MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, two consecutive B frames, a closed GOP, CABAC, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. For SDR video, it recommends BT.709 color. The FFmpeg example requests H.264 and 4:2:0, but it does not explicitly set every listed encoding characteristic; inspect your source and output and adjust the workflow if a specific requirement matters.

If you mean a live HLS stream, do not send the upload MP4 as-is
YouTube HLS ingestion is a live delivery protocol, not an uploaded-video playlist. YouTube’s HLS guidance requires audio and video to be muxed in M2TS media segments, supports H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, and permits only closed GOP. It also specifies HLS media playlists and segments that follow its ingestion protocol. A standard MP4 upload produced by the conversion command above does not itself satisfy those segment and playlist requirements.
For a normal on-demand playlist, upload the video file and add it to a playlist. For live HLS, configure an encoder and segmenter to meet YouTube’s ingestion specification; do not assume that changing MPEG-2 to H.264 alone makes a file ready for HLS.
Common conversion problems and fixes
- “Unknown encoder ‘libx264’” or encoder unavailable: Your installed FFmpeg build does not include libx264. Install a build with an H.264 encoder, or use an available supported encoder such as OpenH264 if your build includes it.
- Wrong language, commentary, or audio track: The example maps every audio stream. Inspect the input stream listing and map only the desired audio stream if needed.
- Output has no sound: Check whether the source has an audio stream and whether the output mapping includes it. The question mark in
-map 0:a?makes audio mapping optional; a silent source can therefore produce a video-only output without an audio-map error. - Comb-like motion or horizontal lines: The source may be interlaced. Confirm scan type and field order, then deinterlace appropriately before upload.
- Motion looks different after conversion: Confirm that the output frame rate matches the recorded rate and that you did not accidentally force a different rate.
- Colors appear wrong: Check the source’s color characteristics and the output color handling. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR, but a blind metadata change does not correct incorrectly interpreted source colors.
- Upload file is much larger than expected: CRF encoding is quality-based, not a fixed bitrate. Adjust the CRF with care or use a target bitrate when a predictable size is more important, while retaining the source’s useful detail.
- YouTube rejects or mishandles a live input: Verify whether you configured HLS ingestion or another live method, and match its container, codecs, segment and playlist rules. An ordinary MP4 upload is a different path.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud, so your computer and home connection can be off.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. Estimate upload time before transferring large files. Start your free day on StreamNeo.
